Shaun Smith fined 10k

It cost Shaun Smith $10,000 to grab a guy's junk

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 1, 2010 11:49 AM ET
The eye in the sky doesn't lie.

Cameras caught Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith grabbing 49ers tackle Anthony Davis' nether regions last Sunday, and the NFL has responded.

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports Smith will pay $10,000 for the infraction. Smith was accused of similar genital grabbing the week before, but avoided punishment there.

If Smith wants to keep up his hit streak this week, he'll have to do it in practice. The Chiefs are on a bye.

10k to give a handjob

FAX 10-01-2010 10:02 AM

Dang. Junk grabbing is expensive.

So the NFL gets the cash and the poor guy with the swollen nuts gets an ice pack. Doesn't seem fair, somehow.

Brodie Croyle was on the Dan Patrick show this morning and of course they brought up Shaun Smith.

They called him "Sascrotch" ROFL.

Was there actually any "evidence" to prove this? I know there was one by Clay, but nowhere on that film clearly showed him cupping it or grabbing the business.

I wondered the same. Sure, it was pretty clear to know when he did it, and the reaction fit the accusation, but a pretty stiff fine for not even being able to see what happened clearly. I'm sure (and other players have mentioned) that it is hardly the first time things like this happens in a pile. Smith has just had the spotlight on him because it all went public and the media ran with it.

HolyHandgernade 10-01-2010 10:13 AM

If it is legal to pull the long hair of a player because it is part of the uniform, why are the other dangly parts off limits? I was just curious what the NFL has determined the difference to be.

That's actually (and finally) a reasonable question. I knew you had one in you.

Chief Pote 10-01-2010 10:17 AM

It's horseshit. No evidence...the video is inconclusive.

Extra Point 10-01-2010 10:18 AM

Pioli will play Santa, give Smith a bonus equal to the sum of the fine(s), and tell Shaun that he needn't reach in the bag for any more presents.

10k is kind of a kick in the nuts.

The NFL has done everything they can to take sacks out of the game.

Shaun Smith was just doing his part to help.

I haven't seen video of this specific play, but the league doesn't need a flag to impose a fine.

That's what I thought. I didn't see a grab. Could have been one but he wasn't really looking it in so to speak.

A DT charged with "offensive holding".

Renegade 10-01-2010 10:38 AM

How much was the fine for the other player punching Smith and drawing a 15 yard penalty?

Anthony Davis lost his balls.

The NFL felt he already gave up enough.

I wonder if Clay had anything to do with this fine.

Eh, two guys from different teams saying the same thing a week apart, combined with the video that sure looks like Davis got a nice surprise by something in his nether-regions, probably makes for a compelling case.

Circumstantial evidence.

It's legal to tackle a ball carrier by the hair. I imagine a DT pulling an OT's hair would result in a flag or fine.

A player can cut his hair so it can't be grabbed.

I suppose in theory he could also......but.......

Smith didn't get caught. I don't see any solid evidence that he did anything. I think he did do it. I am pretty sure everybody THINKS he did it. I don't see any evidence of him actually doing it.

All the horrible O-linemen of the NFL could potentially band together and get all those mean d-linemen that keep embarrassing them fined because apparently being accused of grabbing some guys junk in the pile is a $10,000 offense.

Yeah but with that standard any random player who gets beat by Smith can just grab hold of his nuts and roll around on the ground, drawing a flag or a fine. Smith brought this state of a affairs on himself, but at some point the NFL would have to have stronger evidence.
