Do we ever bring Gonzo back as a player?
Thought about this over the weekend, watching Moss with Minnesota.
He wanted to play for a contender, and we wanted to change the culture here, so it was a smart divorce, with few - if any - bridges burned. While Atlanta is doing well, there will be a moment in time when his contract is up. Does he re-sign with Atlanta? Does he retire (obviously as a Chief) this year or next? Does he give it another go with us? Do we let him if he wants to? I think it would be great if he would come back for a victory lap next year or the year after. He would have great insight for a young Moeaki, and wouldn't take too many snaps from him either. I picture it in the mold of Vrabel, McGraw, Waters, etc... A surly old vet who is a player/coach. It would make for a great prodigal son type of story. |
agree

FYI - his contract runs through 2012... i don't know what that means.
- done in feb 2011? done in feb 2012? |
I don't think they would do it unless they thought he could come in and help us win. By that time Moeaki could be one of the better TE's in the league. If that's the case I doubt we'd need him.
|
I would LOVE to have Tony G back, I want him to retire a Chief. Also I really want to see what kind of advice he can give Moeaki.
|
Moeaki has been great, so unless Tony wants to come back making very little money and playing a backup role, I'm strongly against it. Let him do the "retire as a Chief" thing if he wants to, but otherwise, we've moved on.
|
I'd be OK with it. Not that we need him. Moeaki is playing better as a rookie than TG did. Actually, Moeaki may be a better blocker now than TG ever was.
|
Hell, if we have 2 fullbacks currently, surely there's room for a HOF'er.
Shit - cut O'Connell or Ryan, or whoever the slapdick is at the bottom of the TE chart. |
I see it as a 1 day signing so he can RETIRE a Chief, nothing more. I still got love for Gonzo, and a deep appreciation for what he did while he was here. That being said, he whined his way outta town, and that tends to leave a bad taste in the mouth for guys like Pioli and Haley.

Right, the point wasn't to compare TM with TG.... I was just wondering if it was worth a roster spot in a year or two to bring him on.
Obviously this is looking ahead with many variables between now and then. |

This. |
I don't think TG plays after this season
|
Hell no. I don't want him, and Moeaki is the future. Tony G left us!
|
I keep hearing TM was very injury prone in College, what exactly do we do if that becomes a habit in his pro career? Do we just rely on Pope?
|
No...1 day contract...retire....celebrate.

I'd bring him in.
The guy still knows tricks on top of tricks. He could teach Moeaki a ton. And let's not go crazy with TM just yet, either. Remember - the question was never his talent, it was his durability. Having TG as a backup to Moeaki would sure be a nice security blanket. And think about the twin TE sets we could roll out there. Both guys are capable blockers and have sure hands. We could do a lot of things out of that set; put McCluster as the HB w/ the potential to swing him out wide in a throwing type set (with him starting in the backfield as the occasional running threat). Send him on a wheel route with Bowe running a deep dig route and Moeaki/TG running the seams. Or stick with Jones/Charles back there and simply run out of the set (or send Charles on the wheel). There's a ton of versatility there because of the unique skills offered by both TG and TM. Let's not be jilted lovers here - TG would help this team and help it quite a bit. He'd be able to get separation from a wheel chair because of how well he runs routes and how good he is at using his body as a shield. Have him teach Moeaki while also adding another wrinkle to the offense and we'd be foolish not to give him a look. |

Yes, bring him back..
He can help bring us more rings like he did back in the day plus he gets to pad his stats some more. Win Win all around. |

Let's bring back Andre Rison too!
|
I'd like to bring back Johnnie Johnson to teach Bowe a thing or two about the worm, mma, and butt sex.

TM - BA - BW - CW - RL - BR - TG -----------------------------------DMC --------------Cassel -------------------Jones ----------Charles That would be freakin' nasty. |

But, towards the end, it was about him and his records, and about him getting a chance with a contender. That is not the team attitude they are trying to build here. Sorry, sign him the day before you retire him. |
