Severance (4 weeks), unpaid vacation time (76 hours), and unemployment.

I'm taking a few weeks off for my birthday. :)

Nope, just a lowly tier 1 (possibly tier 2) support person. I had been with the company for nearly 12 years. In that tenure, I was a production worker, a supervisor, a HR assistant, an assistant supervisor, a road crew/warehouse manager, and a customer software support person.

Well, at least your loyalty got you a few extra paychecks... I never would have made it that far, but then again I've never stuck around more than a couple of years at one place.

How much longer until you finish school? Any ideas what you want to do until then?

Lzen 10-29-2010 04:24 PM

Sry to hear that. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Buy a couple of bottles of wine, break out the Rabbit, and forget about it for the evening.

Sorry to hear it. Pretty smart move getting back into school.

Good luck, kiddo.

I wouldn't. I'd get right back into the job market. It could take you 6, 12, 24 months to find something. This economy is frightening.

That's actually a good point. My wife and I have been flabbergasted by the Springfield job market. We're about to start truck driving over it.

my mother-in-law has been out of work for the better part of three years. granted, part of that was taking time to care for her mom (alzheimer's) and not seriously looking, but the job market here is...bad.

Seriously, I would start looking right now. You will have a few weeks off whether you want it or not. I was unemployed until just recently, I got lucky and got hired a few weeks before the money ran out. Otherwise I probably would have lost my house. Unemployment doesn't last forever, you have to plan for the worst in this economy. I don't want to see anybody lose their place or have to sell their car [or live out of their car] because they couldn't find work.

I finish getting my Legal Assistant certificate in 37 weeks. 67 until I am a Paralegal.

I'd love to get into a law firm as a secretary or file clerk or something just to get my foot in the door.

Yep... better to take even just 2-3 hours a day now and get a start on it than wait too long. Every opening you don't see today could very well be filled in a few weeks.

Cool... yeah, that would be perfect, and it would be a nice advantage to show them why you want to work there and be able to show them that you're already working on moving up in the company before you even get the job.

There's that, and the fact that not too many prospective employers in unrelated fields are going to be real thrilled with the idea of hiring someone who is likely going to be moving on in a year. That's what worries me about her situation.

007 10-29-2010 11:42 PM

Damn, that company has really worked you over the last few years. Sure hope you find something soon. Good luck!!!

Good point... a lot of jobs that require some sort of experience won't even let you move around the company for a year to 18 months so they don't waste the time and money training you, so they wouldn't bother in that situation.

Looks like a good chance to pack up, get a house with a couple of people in KC, and take advantage of a larger job market and a shorter drive to Chiefs games. :D

Yes I do. His name is Bozo1970. :)

Seriously though, if that's really the only thing keeping you from moving, it wouldn't be that hard to find someone... I see posts at work from people needing roommates fairly often and could give you their contact info, there's Craigslist (you could find/contact them online, then plan meetings around Chiefs games), ChiefsPlanet, kansascity.com.

But, to answer your question, not anyone personally at the moment.
