I am not sure what was going on with trying to fix the forum but ever since then it's pretty much awful... I have to try like 15 times to just get on here it always says the server is down etc...and it just LAGS

Yeah, it's pretty mossed up.

The lags were what we were trying to fix - they're not a result of the fixes.

And for what it's worth, I've given up on messing with it.

Eh, I dunno. We need a bigger server (again), but this one's operating in the hole as it is. Kyle's planning upgrades, but it's tough to do during the season (not to mention finding time to do it in the first place).

I've definitely learned how time consuming this stuff is.

What would happen if you delete anyone under a certain amount of posts that have not posted for over a year??

Does archiving old threads or deleting them help? Have no idea just throwing stuff out there..

The "how much" and "will deleting stuff" questions I can't confidently answer. I could give you my take, but I'm not 100% sure.

I think we pay somewhere around $270 per month for the server (it's hosted), and I think that pruning posts down would help. But I'm not sure about either.

Is it in the realm of possibility to have 400 members donate $10?

What about 200 members donating $20?

Maybe you should sticky a poll asking how much people would donate, and then set up a donating drive.

Create an archive database on the server separate from the live database. Move all old posts to the archive DB and then you could either search it only when the requested content isn't found in the primary DB, or run two separate versions of the planet (chiefsplanet.com and chiefsplanetarchive.com). If you want to look at old stuff go to the archive site. It won't get nearly as much traffic so even with all the content it shouldn't lag.

The users really shouldn't effect things, especially if they're not even logging in and being active anymore.

Looks like you're using DirectNIC for your domain hosting. I use them too. Who are you using for the web hosting, though? Are you using the same server for Apache and MySQL or do you have them split up? I would definitely recommend a dedicated MySQL server if you don't already have one. Rackspace Cloud Servers are a great thing to look into if you're curious about doing something like that. You could get 2 dedicated servers running constantly for $100 - $200/mo depending on how much you beef them up. You can easily scale them, too, so upgrades a very simple. Just tell it you want more and your price will go up a little bit. If you can't generate that amount of money with the traffic you get then you're doing something wrong.

On that note, I've always noticed that donate buttons do not work. Make it say "buy me a beer" with a little beer icon next to it. Set it to $5 and watch the "beers" come rolling in to your PayPal account. You won't let me do it here, of course, but I get lots of "beers" from other forums that I post in because I put a buy me a beer button in my signature and I provide valuable content. (On that note, I'd provide more content here if I could put that in my sig, and people like GoChiefs and all the people who enjoy his content would benefit from that ability as well. I know he could use a new capture card). You could even setup a revenue sharing system where people who provide good content can qualify for revenue sharing and automatically disperse some of the donations accordingly. PayPal's new Adaptive Payments API's would make this type of thing really easy and would probably encourage people to start providing better content at the same time as generating plenty of money for servers and even profit.

I could keep typing more and more about this stuff but let me know some details and I can help. There's no reason with the amount of traffic you get to this site that we can't generate enough money for decent servers.

As I've alluded to, I'm really just a wannabe when it comes to this stuff and have no real decision-making authority, but I'm sure that Kyle will stop by eventually and see this. I've thought about the "archive" thing, and it's a possibility if we could figure out how to make it work. Or we may just throw more hardware at it. Who knows?

Well, maybe we can ask for some "Obama Money" (those Obama stimulus dollars), and an Obama server?

likely not. it's nothing against them, but I'm a cheapskate college student. I'm not exactly broke most of the time, but I'm frugal and don't see myself throwing cash to something like that. I'd rather put the money back to the time when I have to pay off the mountain of student loans I've accrued.

Do you have some nifty way of doing it, or just manually move tables over every once in a while? It seems like it'd be a pain, but it's possible.

I personally move tables over constantly. Our other owner does other things, I'll ask him, but it definitely helps.

There are plenty of nifty ways of doing it. You (or somebody like myself) could write PHP scripts to move all records in 1 MySQL DB to another if they're older than a given date. That would completely automate the process. Could even provide logs of all the stuff that was archived and keep a sticky in the forum somewhere that shows people updates on archived threads.

Another thing you could do is use a tool like Navicat, a MySQL manager, and setup automated backup/archive rules within it. It'd still be automatic but it would run from a client instead of the server.

If you automatically archive old threads, how are we going to bump them so that we can make "neener, neener" posts? :shrug:

Well, the way I see it, the system would archive a thread after a period of time has passed with no action. Then if you want to bump it you can find it on the archive site, reply to it, which would trigger the action of un-archiving it and placing it back into the regular database.

There are other ways it could be handled as well but that's the first thing that came to my head.
