Just because they can does not mean they will. I seem to recall them hiring GRob after Dickie V cut him loose.....

He was only Co-D-cord I believe with Chizik sp? Still they won the title that year with a pretty good defense. It's stupid to pretend that this is the end of Texas.

Never said it would be the end of the milk cows. Just said that just because they can afford the best doesn't mean they will actually hire the best.

Absolutely.

Muschamp's Gators are going to play classic SEC football. Might be a big switch for some of the younger Gators fans going from a offensive-focused team to a defensive-focused one, but the Gators are going to be just fine.

I'm hoping we somehow end up with something more closely resembling the pro-set on offense as well. I think that Oklahoma and Texas are both closer than our wierd little offense (which apparently required Tebow).

I was kinda hoping for Harbaugh, but this decision is growing on me.

Jim Jones 12-11-2010 10:29 PM

What does it say for Applewhite that Texas apparently didn't think enough of him to give him a crack at their currently vacant OC offering? Bringing him along to run Florida's offense is a terrible move.

I like Muschamp, but I think he'll bolt for Texas when Mack Brown leaves.

LiveSteam 12-11-2010 11:55 PM

Muschamp couldn't devise a defense to stop a Kansas State team that scored 35 against UT before they threw one pass! He made the kid from UCLA look like Earl. Made Iowa State look tremendous. I am not impressed. Florida will not compete at the same level in two years.

No head coach is going to leave Florida for Texas. It's a lateral move. Two of the great football programs in the country.

As for Muschamp, he has more roots in Florida and the SEC than outside it.

ChiefGator 12-12-2010 07:00 AM

So.. I want the Kirby Smart rumors to be true, but isn't he already DC in 'Bama and under contract? How do you get him in a lateral move, even if he wants to be in Florida with Muschamp?

Yeah, plus I wouldn't be surprised if there's a clause in the contract that makes the buyout for Texas astronomical.

I don't see it happening, but you make him Asst HC + DC and show him the $$.

Hearing that Muschamp is looking to hire John Papuchis (Nebraska) and/or Bo Davis (Alabama) as part of the defensive staff.

He got a huge bump in pay this past offseason.

He wouldn't leave for UGA, his alma mater, who were going to make him the highest paid assistant in the country and give him HC in waiting status....he ain't leaving for Florida.

Again, I don't think he'll leave, but Muschamp and Smart are very good friends. They both played at UGA and coached together at Voldosta State and LSU.

Good point, who knows...just don't think he'll go.

I personally didn't really want him at UGA, I think it's more Saban's defense than him...think he just goes along with NS and rides shotgun.

Not saying he's a bad DC or whatever but I was weary of UGA making him the highest paid assistant.

They ALWAYS bring up Stoops for the Florida connection. I always feel the chance of it happening is very low. The local paper even brought up Shanahan again, even though he has a job (but perhaps little job security) in Washington.

Thing is, I've read that when Urban stepped down for a day or two last year Stoops agreed to take the Florida job then. Obviously I can't confirm that or state it as fact, but it's what I've heard/read. On the same note, Stoops turned us down after Spurrier left and after Zook got fired so take it as a grain of salt.

That might be another reason he'd leave. Everyone perceives Bama's defense as Saban's, not Smart's. He might want to leave Saban's shadow and make more of a name for himself. Over the past 2-3 years more Florida assistants have left for HC jobs elsewhere or NFL jobs than probably any other University, so it's technically more of a stepping stone position than at Bama.

Dan Mullen - HC at MSU
Charlie Strong - HC at Louisville
Doc Holliday - WVU before HC @ Marshall
Greg Mattison - DC for Ravens
Dan McCarney - HC for North Texas

Show me another school that has had as many guys become HC/DC for NFL in the same time period.

I'm not sure that I could. It doesn't matter; those placements don't mean that Florida is "technically a better stepping stone" than any other similarly-competent program. Those placements are explained in full by the following: "teams were good, yo."

If Muschamp can assemble a coterie of coaches and players that equal the success of Urban Meyer's years, then there will be a similarly-large number of placements. And it will have very little, if anything, to do with it being at Florida vs somewhere else.

I don't know what that time frame is but from OU you have the following list all becoming head coaches:

Long
Sumlin
Stoops
Mangini
Wilson
Leach
Pelini

Heh, Vandy is about to announce a better head coaching hire than Florida just did.

Supposedly Gus Malzahn has received an offer from Vandy for their opening and is going to accept it.
