Kansas State's Jacob Pullen: 'I won't play basketball in the NIT'

With Kansas State off to a rough start in Big 12 play, senior guard Jacob Pullen wants to right the ship -- and quickly.

His reason? He doesn't want to miss the NCAA tournament in his final college season.

And, after the Wildcats lost to Colorado on Wednesday night, Pullen said if Kansas State were to miss the Big Dance and be relegated to the NIT, he simply won't play.

"This is my last go-around," Pullen said, according to The Kansas City Star. "I'm not going to the NIT. I won't play basketball in the NIT. I'm saying that now. If we lose, and we have to go to the NIT, I will not play."

While Kansas State isn't necessarily in danger of missing the tournament as of yet -- they are 12-5 overall and ranked No. 20 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 poll, by the way -- things can change quickly if their current two-game losing streak stretches any further.

Luckily for the Wildcats, Pullen knows things can turn around.

"We've just got to grow up," Pullen said. "That's the biggest thing. The Big 12 is 16 games. We lost our first two. Nothing says we can't win the rest."

The Wildcats won't need to win the rest of their game to reach the NCAA tournament, but it's good to see Pullen thinking big.

Winning 14 straight B12 games is a tall order they are not that good. We all knew they were over rated to start with,they are probably looking at 4 to 6 more losses in the B12.

I don’t have a problem with this. I see it as just trying to get the team fired up, kind of like Tebow’s little "no one will work harder" speech the year they won the championship.

However, it will take a lot more than words to get that trainwreck back on track.

Pullen is really displaying the type of senior leadership that the team needs when they hit a rough patch. Selfish, off the cuff comments are always a good pick-me-up.

Tech coming up, then @aTm, @Moo, vs. Baylor, @KU. They could easily start off here 1-6.

Tough to come back on that. FTR, I just don't see anybody going unblemished this year in the B12, IMHO, a 12 - 4 should win it this year.

I wonder if that win over Washington State on the road will prove to be their best all season. Saul probably longs for those days.

I've been to 3 NIT home games. They were all pretty fun. Wouldn't mind going to another one, if we can get at least a 3 seed.

This team has a chance to make some noise. 2 years ago we went 0-4 to start off conference play and ended up in the Top 4 of the Big XII. I think that's still attainable...unless we shit the bed on Saturday.

Top 4 is not the B12 championship you wanted. :(

Pffffft. Who cares? Post season is all that really matters in basketball. After not experiencing it for so long, that's all I personally care about.

Might be true for a broader, national perspective, but I disagree. Conference championships are underrated because they are a true indication of a team's overall worth. Too much luck involved in March madness.

Conference tournament, ya ****ing dummy. But I can see how you would be confused, billay... I mean mikey.

I was listening to Pullen being interviewed this week. He said there are a couple players on the floor at any given time that don't execute the offense correctly. Wrong place, moving to the wrong spot, confused, etc. That needs to be corrected or it will be a long season. Hopefully, they can get it straightened out. As a KU fan I'd like to see K-State in the big dance.

Lord knows KU fans NEVER bring up the fact that Kansas has been the conference champion 6 times in a row.

Dude, To think that for 1 minute KU does not think that a B12 conference and B12 Tournament Champs are not targeted goals is just plum lunacy. I have never known any KU coach that did not set these goals in order ( since the start of a conference tournament) ...... Conference Champs, Tournament Champs and then National Champions. Not sure about anybody else, but for this Hawk fan, I take it all in. We pride ourselves, or least it be should.
