***Official Chiefs Visit/Workout/Met Thread***
It stands to reason that we will select players that we have met with, hosted for a visit, and/or had them work out for us. Why would you draft someone without setting up a meeting or talking with them? Obviously we won't be able to track phone calls, private meetings, etc... but we may as well list what we do know.
I know that ArrowheadPride keeps a really solid list in table format, but I haven't seen it updated since January. I figured we could start compiling that info here as well, even if its just borrowed from other websites like AP and PFT, among others. I will edit this post when someone posts updated info. PFT's list: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...kouts-tracker/ Kansas City Chiefs as of 4/16/11

I really, really like Muhammed Wilkerson (DT, Temple) after watching his video

Luke Stocker is more in the mold of Dallas Clark than Tony G. Might be a good complement to Tony Mo.

Dwayne Harris really seems to enjoy crossing routes.

Looking at that list it seems that Phil Taylor will have a late go around with teams since he hasn't visited anyone |

I'm not sure who has had their pro day, or who we've gone specifically to watch, either. So if and when we get those tid-bits, I will update as well. I really think we will draft a majority of our picks from guys we meet with, so we may as well get to talking about these guys in addition to whoever else CP is jerking off to at any given moment. |

National Football Post article on media info and workouts:
Ten plus years ago, draft intel such as 40 times, injuries, private workouts and visits were secret, sacred and difficult to obtain. The agents controlled (and still do) most of the information that went to the media. Mel Kiper was like Halloween’s Elvira who only came out about one month out of the year, and the Combine and Senior bowl were void of the mass media. Times have really changed: Today, the Combine is on TV, there are over 50 websites dedicated to the draft, the Senior Bowl and Combine are flooded with media members and every move made by a team or draftee is quickly announced for public consumption. More NFL sites and TV outlets are now covering draft prospects 9 months out of the year. The days of teams moving secretly on campus to conduct private workouts are over. I know for a fact that the majority of agents leak their clients' workouts with hopes of generating interest from other teams and in order to paint the picture of inflated interest. But does the media coverage have an impact on the outcome of the draft and its participants? Media Evaluations of talent When looking at mock drafts and player rankings the media doesn’t have the whole picture to make the most accurate projections. What they do have is combine data, glimpses of players from all-star games, and some game highlight shots. Some may even have all the TV tape (not coaches tape) of all the games. Most get second hand reports from pro days that the media was excluded from and others have a direct conduit to scouts and even directors. What they don’t have are the important pieces of the puzzle that have a huge impact on what decisions are ultimately made on draft day. The media lacks access to college injury files, Combine physical reports, first hand character reports from college coaches and teammates, and the whispers that come from college trainers and position and strength coaches who usually know more about the players than anyone. They also are not privy to the results of intense one-on-one film study and grease board sessions conducted at the senior bowl, the combine, and private campus workouts. Thus, a big part of the puzzle is missing to make a true and accurate evaluation. The media have very little impact on how a team will set its draft board. Although, there are some owners who are obsessed with public opinion and get daily clippings to keep up with general information flow. If a draftee does have some character issues in which the media is well aware of, it may sway management to avoid that particular player on draft day. Agent Propaganda It’s the agents' job to do whatever it takes to help get his or her player drafted as high as possible. Thus, we are usually giving the media heaping spoonfuls of information that is beneficial to our client’s image and draft stock. Agents right now are exaggerating 40 times, the amount of private workouts and visits, along with getting their clients multiple interviews in different markets with hopes of heightening their profile. Both big and small media are eating up whatever we are serving. And yes, I have been guilty of all the above. The agent hype machine can make a big impact in the media but it doesn’t really translate to moving up the board. If players and their families start believing everything they are reading it usually sets the player up for a long and disappointing draft weekend. Blaine GabbertBlaine Gabbert has reportedly met with several NFL teams, but which are really interested in drafting the QB? The team visit; a smoke screen? One longtime scouting director told me that if he were interested in a QB, he would not bring in him for a visit and bring in one he had no interest in drafting. The reason for this was that it would leak out and he didn’t want to show his hand to the other teams. Last year, client LB Pat Angerer had only one visit to the Saints and was eventually drafted in the 2nd round by the Colts who showed very little interest in him throughout the whole evaluation process. The Saints did not draft a linebacker in 2010. Iowa gives NFL personnel quality access to their players so there’s little need for re-checks via a visit. Many teams use their allotted visits for a closer medical check, character check, and to “recruit” potential priority undrafted free agents. They also use them to send mixed messages to other teams using the media to do so. So don’t read too much into a team visit. More visits do not equate into more interest. NFL teams have been known to use some media produced mock drafts in their war room as an added tool to guess what other teams may do. However, I believe the media has little effect on the outcome of the draft. The exception is in a case where the media has a negative character mark on a player and produces content about him frequently. It’s been my experience since being in the business that NFL teams give very little clues as to who they will draft. 50% of the time, my clients will be drafted by teams that did not have a private workout or a team visit. Not to say speculating isn’t fun and entertaining. |

I bolded that part, because that means that 50% of the time, they are drafted by a team that had a private workout or team visit. I'm not saying every guy we get will be on this list, but I think its valuable to at least keep track of the ones we do meet with. I bet we get a couple on this list, or at least try to. |

That Culliver kid has me intrigued too. A FS with sub 4.4 speed? Hrmmm......Wonder how good he is in coverage? He certainly has the look of an athlete, and he plays as fast as he times on those returns. |

Yeah, Culliver's fast as shit. Not sure how well his coverage is. I'm pretty sure he played CB in college but is transitioning to FS for the NFL. |

Baylor DT Phil Taylor Works Out For KC Chiefs I figured the Kansas City Chiefs would do this. According to Aaron Wilson of National Football Post, Baylor DT Phil Taylor worked out for the Chiefs, as well as the Cleveland Browns and another AFC playoff team (New England is my guess if they're trying to keep it quiet). Taylor has six visits and five private workouts to this point. Taylor is one of several nose tackles the Chiefs have checked out in the pre-draft process. We're not sure if they're prepared to pull the trigger on one at No. 21 but, if they do, Taylor will be an option. He's 6'3" and 334 pounds coming off of what was a solid pro day according to many accounts. We don't know Ron Edwards future with the Chiefs but he is not under contract for 2011. I felt that Edwards would be fine on the line for another year if the Chiefs decided against drafting the nose tackle of the future in April. We'll see what happens there. It's one of the bigger question marks on this Chiefs team right now. A few years ago, GM Scott Pioli was with the Patriots and used the 21st pick on a talented nose tackle out of Miami. The pick ended up being an OK one as the guy went to three Pro Bowls (so far). |

Im fine if that happens. Im not always for moving down in a draft to add future picks, but if we can move down to the end of the round or even the beginning of the second and pick up a second next year that would be alright too...similar talent that is available at 21 will likely be still available then. |
Updated with Yates, Taylor, and Hankerson

I really like Jah Reid as a right tackle for the Chiefs maybe in the 4th or 5th round. The only problem I see with him - "He's a Right Tackle". I'd prefer the Chiefs picked a guy that could play either side. If Albert goes down, we are in trouble, so we need someone that can play either.
Back to Jah Reid. Watch video of him from this last year at UCF and I think you will come away impressed. He's big and strong and moves his man all over the field. He does not give up on his blocks and let his man come back into the play. He locks on and finishes his blocks. I've seen him get beaten a couple of times with speed rushers but that can happen with such a big man as Jah Reid. Anyway there's a lot of video out there on UCF. Go out and look at some. Watch for #76 on the right side of the offensive line. Also looked good in the Shrine game if you can find some video of it from this year. |
The last part of the Jah Reid video shows some of the East West Shrine Bowl.
Reid was also one of the team captains for UCF. Different side of the offensive line, but he reminds me some of Sebastian Vollmer from the 2009 draft. They are both huge men that use their size and strength well. I'm sure he would go higher in the draft if he had played on the left side. If Barry Richardson could back up on the left and right side, maybe the Chiefs would be OK with drafting Jah Reid. |

The one un-funny thing I saw about him, was that one draft site compared him to Ryan O-Callaghan. AHHHHHHH! |
Quote:
Reid was 9'3" on the broad jump and 29 1/2 on the vertical. O'Callaghan was 7'8" and 25 for the vertical. I watched Reid in 3 games this year including the Shrine Game. Also watched probably 6 videos of UCF highlights from the season. I'm no NFL expert but I liked what I saw of him. I'm by no means declaring him an early round pick. He needs good coaching but he has the athletic ability that you look for and he does a good job of playing the right tackle position. If I had my pick for an OT from this year's draft, I'd take Gabe Carimi. He could play the left or right side for the Chiefs and would greatly improve the line in his first year. Reid could be the starter on the right side but might take him a year to earn that spot. |
Edmund Gates (one of the top 5 WR in the draft, IMO) worked out for the Chiefs last week. He'll likely go in the early to middle of the 3rd round, but I wouldn't be opposed to spending a 2nd on him.

Interesting that the Chiefs have been bringing in several RBs. You know Charles is secure as the number 1 RB. Todd has talked glowingly of Jones. Battle, Cox, and Castille are free agents but the guys they've been bringing in are about Thomas Jones size and speed. I guess you can never have enough good RBs in the NFL. They need at least 3.

Taiwan Jones tore up the big sky conference. Except Montana State. But yea, highly regarded division two talent.

Kind of an interesting statement. They ate together and they found no problems. As defensive lineman in the NFL do you want them to fight over the last pork chop? Even though he's not a true NT at 6'4" 315 lbs, I could see Wilkerson being a Pioli type player. I say he's not a true NT because he played tackle in a 4 -3 and then when they moved to the 3 -4, he played DE. |

I attempted to organize this list to try and draw some conclusions. This is assuming that NFL pre-draft visitors has some type of meaning when it comes to the draft. Also noticed that there were more than 30, so does that mean that the former rules don’t apply, the list is wrong, or some of these guys count as local, so they do not apply to the 30 count? I think if a player is from the area or went to school in the area, they are considered local and don’t count against the limit.
So what kind of guesses could you make by looking at this list of Chiefs pre-draft visitors? 1. The Chiefs will draft a QB. There were 5 QBs going from rd 1 to 7. It seems that at some point the Chiefs will pull the trigger on a QB to be drafted. 2. KC brought in a lot of offensive linemen. Conclusion, the Chiefs will draft an offensive lineman and probably two. Surprisingly one of them looks to be a 3rd round guard. Three guys were brought in that will be guards drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. If the Chiefs draft a 3rd round guard, what does that mean for current guards? 3. The WR position has 6 guys on the list. They range in the round that they would be picked. I think that means they will add a WR at some point in the draft. 4. Outside linebacker went from 1st round to FA. My conclusion, if they don’t draft a guy in the first they go with players on the current roster like Andy Studebaker and add some college free agents. 5. All of the RB visitors lead me to believe that a running back will also be taken somewhere in the middle of the draft. 6. A DT will also be taken but all of the defensive ends, leads one to think they might also go there in the draft. If that happens it would seem Shaun Smith might be gone. 7. The free safety visitors make you think they might want to draft one and maybe push Lewis to a back up role. 8. Tight end is not a priority but maybe if a special player like TE Luke Stocker fell to the Chiefs in the right draft round, they could draft him. 1. Colin Kaepernik QB Nevada Rd 1 - 2 2. Andy Dalton QB TCU Rd 2 - 3 3. Pat Devlin QB Delaware Rd 4 – 5 4. Nathan Enderle QB Idaho Rd 7 5. T.J. Yates QB North Carolina 7 - FA 6. Justin Houston OLB Georgia Rd 1 7. I've listed the players that the Chiefs have reportedly shown interest in through a variety of ways: Hosted for a visit, Had a private workout with; Had dinner with, Spent time checking out via Pro day; Interest via media reports; etc...
Suffice it to say this list isn't "only" guys we've hosted for a visit. |
My guess is that we will look to fill immediate holes at the beginning, and back fill with quality talent from then on.
Here is my assessment of team needs, in order of severity: CRITICAL NEED 1. Starting Caliber WR (Literally no one outside of Bowe) 2. Starting Caliber Center (if Weigmann retires, and if they don't plan on moving Asamoah to C) 3. Starting Caliber Nose Tackle (Smith may not return, Edwards is not a starter) SERIOUS NEED 1. Future Starting Caliber OLB (Studebaker can start until grooming is done) 2. WR depth (We have zero depth at this position. The cupboard is bare.) 3. QB depth (Brodie's all but gone, Palko sucks, a prospect back up is needed) NEED 1. RT depth (Someone to push Barry Richardson) 2. Safety depth (Mcgraw is old and slow, and he's our last real option) 3. RB depth (Jones wears down as the season goes on, and we have to have production outside of JC in terms of short yardage/goal line situations. Dexter will help slightly on the speed back plays) WANT 1. Inside Linebacker to put next to DJ. (An upgrade would be nice) 2. A second Starter Caliber TE (Think New England. Also, Moeaki could go down at any given time) 3. A second prospect at Guard (Having Asamoah is nice, having another would be twice as nice. Waters is getting old, and Lilja is no spring chicken.) I think we are 13 players (2 Drafts/Free Agencies) away from having a "complete team" assuming everyone plays to their potential. If Cassel starts regressing, it could be 4 years until we are a complete, perennial SB contending team built for longevity. We are on the right path, I'd like to think. Hopefully we have another home run draft class! |
I kinda hope we pursue Taiwan Jones. I think he's got the goods. I've watched him a fair bit, albeit against inferior competition...
|
http://draftace.com/blog/category/teams/chiefs/
According to Josh Buchanan of JBScouting.com Lehigh offensive lineman Will Rackley is lining up a number of visits and private workouts. He’ll be one of the busiest prospects over the next month, as he meets with the Browns, Cowboys, Rams, Chiefs, Dolphins, Lions, Jaguars, Patriots and Jets. Rackley played left tackle in college but is probably best suited for guard at the next level. That said, his potential versatility certainly gives his stock an extra boost. |

I'm going to throw out some additional ideas on this. No one get all mad but I'll put some of the names in here from the list of players KC is reported to be interested in. I think your number 1 "critical need" priority, WR, should be taken care of in free agency, maybe a Steve Breaston. The number 2 in your "serious need" WR, should be taken care of in the draft. Doing that allows the drafted WR a little time to develop. (1st round) Leonard Hankerson WR Miami Bringing back Casey Wiegmann for one more year would also allow us to draft and develop a center. That would take care of your number 2 "critical need". (4th round) Kris O’Dowd C USC The number 3 "critical need" Nose Tackle should also be taken care of with a free agent signing plus a draft pick. I still think there will be a free agency this year. I know a lot of people are really down on Ron Edwards but if we brought him back and he splits time with a drafted rookie, it could really strengthen our defensive line. (3rd round) Jerrel Powe DT Ole Miss Your number 1 "serious need" OLB I think is already on the team in Andy Studebaker or Cameron Sheffield. I think we give them a try and see what they can do. The number 3 "serious need" QB...the Chiefs have talked with QBs in the draft from 1st round down...surely somewhere this year they draft one. (2nd round) Colin Kaepernik QB Nevada NEED 1. RT depth (5th round) Jah Reid OT Central Florida 2. Safety depth - sign ? FA to work with young secondary. 3. RB depth - (5th round) Bilal Powell RB Louisville and Ryan Taylor FB North Carolina FA WANT 1. Inside Linebacker - I think Javon Belcher and Micah Johnson handle this. 2. A second Starter Caliber TE - sign free agent Bo Scaife 3. A second prospect at Guard - Give Waters, Lilja, Asamoah, and Harris one more year. The WR position now becomes a strength with Bowe, Breaston and Hankerson. I could go on but you can look at the list and see what these moves would do to improve the Chiefs. |
Hankerson that early is a reach. Kaepernik that late probably not going to happen. There are other centers I'd take before O'Dowd in the 4th but he was the only center from the list to pick from in the middle rounds.
|
Quote:
To think we will be able to knock it all down in one season, and have it be a success built for longevity, is a lot of hoping. I'd be happy to cross 3 of our 6 Critical/Serious Needs off the list, and 3 of our 6 Need/Wants off the list this year. That would mean batting +500 in the draft, and having 2 solid FA pickups, and possibly 3 additional pick ups for depth needs/special teams. If anyone can do it, its Scotty-too-hottie. |
