Going to be in Denver this weekend.
 

I'm going to be in Denver Friday night and I have a free day Saturday. Any recommendations on something to do, besides punch John Elway in the face if I see him? My wife and I are thinking about driving up Estes Park. Is it with it?

Then Sunday and Monday I'll be in Breckenridge. Is there anything to do there?

When I was there last July I enjoyed the drive up Mt. Evans, the highest paved US road. IIRC, the peak elevation is around 14k ft.

Check if there's a show at Red Rocks. Awesome venue.

See what's going on at the Denver Museum of Art. They had some nice exhibits when I visited.

Dang, that place looks cool. To bad they don't have anything scheduled for this weekend.

If the Mount Evans road is open, that's a cool drive, and strap your helmet on and get a rental car with power.

Go to Manitou Springs (about an hour south) and take the cog railroad to the top of Pike's Peak.

Estes Park is indeed very nice.

Those would be my top three recommendations for one day in Colorado.

If you're already going to Breckenridge don't bother going to Estes, unless you feel like driving around RMNP for whatever reason.

Lots of cool stuff on the 16th street mall and around LoDo. The art museum and natural history/science museum are both worth the price of admission if you're into that sort of thing.

Pikes Peak sounds cool. May do that instead of Estes Park. Thanks!

There's still snow up top. You may want to make sure the road's open before driving down.

Any kind of night life in Breckenridge?

I wasn't all that impressed with the drive up to Mt Evans, all that is up there is the remains of a burnt out building and not much oxygen. I'd recommend Pike's Peak instead.

There's some cool cliff dwellings in Manitou Springs too.

My bad. Us Floridians aren't used to thinking things aren't year-round. ;)

I was just getting on to recommend that more strongly. check to be sure the train is running, and if so you'll enjoy it.

There usually is but ski season ended at Breck last weekend so it may be fairly quite.

Unfortunately, you're in a bit of a weird time period. There's still lots of snow up top, so Mt. Evans and Trail Ridge Road (through RMNP) are both still closed. That means that places like Estes Park will probably be a little dead, which is great for shopping if that's your thing, but not much for atmosphere.

On the other hand, most of the ski areas closed in the past few weeks, so the ski towns are also now pretty dead. The sad thing is that there's still TONS of snow up there, but they're closed anyway. I think it'd make me pretty bummed out to be in Breck staring at the slopes, but no way to ski them!

If you're the type to get outdoors for real, let me know. I know area hiking and snowshoeing trails pretty well. You technically could ski Loveland or Arapahoe Basin if that's your thing.

If you're looking for cultural attractions, you can definitely make a day out of Denver. The Art Museum is worth the trip. It sounds like you're on your own (rather than with kids), so the Zoo and Aquarium would probably be pretty meh for you. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is pretty kid-oriented in areas, but if you're into natural history, you can burn a few hours there.

If you're looking to try and get outdoors some, but not wanting to go the physical exertion route, Colorado Springs has a train that you can take up Pike's Peak, and Garden of the Gods is pretty cool. Cave of the Winds is there, but I was pretty underwhelmed by it.

If you're much of a beer drinker, we've got breweries everywhere that you could tour. I've never done the Coors tour in Golden, but if that's your thing, it's an option. I'm a bigger fan of all of the smaller breweries like New Belgium, O'Dell's, Avery, Left Hand, and Boulder Beer. There's also Breckenridge Brewery and Great Divide brewing in downtown Denver.

Finally, the Rockies have a home game Saturday night, and Coors field is (IMO) a great place to catch a game.

Oh, I've never done it, but there's an old railroad train in Georgetown (about halfway between Denver and Breck) that's supposed to be pretty scenic.

Look for afternoon/evening rain at this time of year, and don't be surprised if it's snowing in Breck.

Good point. They got about 8" of snow in some areas yesterday, and it's supposed to snow again this weekend.

So is it like here and everything closes when they get that kind of snow?

Yep. I understand that they are running the cog RR year-round now, too. I've only ever done it in non-winter. It would be pretty cool. It will be much colder at the summit.

I'll second the notion about Manitou Springs. It's just a very neat, eclectic town that has quite a bit of shopping and some sights nearby, IIRC. Garden of the Gods is amazing, too. A must see.

I'm not kidding when I say it will be cold. Take multiple layers. Oh, and make sure that you stay hydrated.

Na, Breck got 500" of snow this year. They're used to it.
