75mph signs start going up in KS

75mph Signs Go Up, As Speed Limit Goes Up Friday
Starting tomorrow, drivers on some highways will be able to go 75 miles per hour.

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Starting tomorrow, drivers on some highways will be able to go 75 miles per hour.
The Kansas Department of Transportation has been placing the new speed limit signs along highways Thursday in preparation for the change on Friday.
According to a news release from the Kansas Department of Transportation, the following location will see the speed limit change:

• I-135 from a half-mile north of the 85th Street interchange in Harvey County to I-70 near Salina.
• I-70 from the Colorado state line to just west of Topeka in Shawnee County.
• I-35 from U.S. 50 just east of Emporia to a mile east of the Sunflower/Edgerton Interchange in Johnson County.
• U.S. 81 from I-70 near Salina north to K-106.
• U.S. 69 from just six-tenths of a mile north of the north junction of U.S. 54 in Bourbon County to the 199th Street Interchange in Johnson County.
• The Kansas Turnpike from the Oklahoma state line to K-7 in Wyandotte County.

A total of 807 miles of Kansas roads will be 75 miles per hour.

KDOT hopes to have all the signs changed in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Coach 06-30-2011 03:38 PM

**** yeah! Soon, crank it up to 80!

DMAC 06-30-2011 03:42 PM

Max: 85
Recommended: 75
Minimum: 55

BillSelfsTrophycase 06-30-2011 03:45 PM

I thought it already was 75 on I-70 past Topeka

Of course making that boring ass trip can cause brain damage

BigCatDaddy 06-30-2011 03:45 PM

I guess instead of having people race side by side down the HWY at 72 MPH taking up both lanes, now they can race side by side at 77 taking up both damn lanes!

That's only in Missouri.

We don't have enough people to occupy TWO whole lanes at once!

Mr. Laz 06-30-2011 03:49 PM

this just lets all us Kansans get a real head of steam going so we can run multiple murons over once we hit the state line.

Brock 06-30-2011 03:53 PM

LOL. Of course I currently have no car that I would feel safe going 75 mph in at the moment.

Demonpenz 06-30-2011 03:56 PM

I drive a 1990 Plymouth Turismo and I am 320 pounds, I also have roughly 44 pounds of egg mcmuffin with sausage wrappers in my car. No way am I getting upto 75 mpg

BigMeatballDave 06-30-2011 03:56 PM

That means you're safe from a ticket up to 82mph :)

chefsos 06-30-2011 03:56 PM

75 MILES PER HOUR??!! How does that work? Don't you get the bends or something if you slow down too quickly?

BigMeatballDave 06-30-2011 03:59 PM

The state knows people want to get the **** outta that state, quick.

Tactical Funky 06-30-2011 04:05 PM

I've been traveling 80mph on Kansas highways for years now, so this only means I'll now be able to go 85.

Marcellus 06-30-2011 04:05 PM

I live right off a highway in Kansas. Thank God it's not one of them they raised the speed limit on.

I already have to be doing 65 to leave my driveway.

Titty Meat 06-30-2011 04:06 PM

I like how you can go faster and theres still no guard rails for K-10! Woohoo safety!

Fish 06-30-2011 05:37 PM

Remember when semis were the fastest vehicles on the highways?

I've got mixed feelings on this. I'm thinking it will do more harm than good. They're essentially increasing the variance of speed of the vehicles on the highway. And I really question whether that's a good idea. Semis and crappy cars aren't going to be cruising along at 75-80 with the rest of the cars. This is going to cause the impatient assholes to drive even worse than they do now. Having some people going 80+, and others going 55-60, makes it that much harder for idiot drivers to determine how quickly they're approaching another vehicle. It will probably raise fatality rates, which will in turn cause our stupid government to try and implement more driving regulations.

I feel old.

Your worry is valid, but only because dipshits in this state don't understand what the different lanes are for.

There shouldn't be any speed limit. Just drive as fast as you want. It's not like you're going to hit anything.

Eh, it's not like they're doing it at I35 and I435. It's 5mph on rural highways... other states do it, and I'm sure the change wasn't taken lightly. People who barely go 65-70 will now barely go 70-75... people who drive for miles in the fast lane, spend 3 minutes in the blind spot of a semi, and break at every little thing will still be on the road, cussing at those crazy assholes who want to drive 80.

The only thing worse than driving through western Kansas is driving through mid and western Nebraska (I-80) and eastern Colorado/Wyoming. I'll throw in western OK and TX. That ain't God's country, that's torture.

At least Nebraska is 75mph... try going between St. Louis and Chicago... just as flat and boring, but at 65mph with a truck speed of 55mph and trucks constantly passing one another at 55-60mph.

I'd say eastern Colorado is just as bad, but I'll take the drive through Nebraska over the drive through Kansas any day. At least in Nebraska a good chunk of the interstate follows the Platte River, so you get to see some trees and water. IMO, Nebraska is more comparable to central Illinois.

All suck, but to varying degrees.

Western Kansas - SuckX10 (Excruciating, mind-numbing, psyche-scarring)
Eastern Colorado - SuckX9.5 (gets a .5 break because at least you're out of Kansas)
Central Illinois SuckX8.5 (the shitty speed limit makes the difference)
Eastern/Central South Dakota SuckX8
Nebraska - SuckX8
Eastern Wyoming SuckX6 (at least the terrain starts to break up a bit).

Never been to western Oklahoma or any part of Texas. And I'm good with that.

The entire stretch from St Louis until the Indiana border is boring as shit.

What makes it sucks out west of Hays is that I-70 breaks off a NW direction before going west again. I hate that section of the interstate.

The speed limit's been 75 on the interstate highways in the Dakotas, Montana, and parts of Nebraska for years.

I only wish the rest of the fly-over states would get with the program (Iowa, I'm looking at you)

Ohio is still 65.

I think some portions of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho had no speed limits in the late 60s
early 70s. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Backwards Masking 06-30-2011 07:40 PM

This should have been done a long time ago, I drove to Co. Last summer via 1-70. There's NOTHING for five-six HOURS after Topeka. You get to Co. and see 75 mph and you're like "Gee, I wish my state wasn't run by idiots."

Actually, truth be told, 75 is too slow too. Kansas could garner some popularity and be the first state in the country to have the AutoBaun. If Germany can have one, where, get this, there's actually people and buildings, why the hell not Kansas?

Good luck, wasn't I-35 (among others, I'm sure) 60mph only 10-15 years ago? I know it's all 70 now, but when I was in college I seem to remember cussing at going from the 70mph in MO to 60.

Yeah, you planted a seed of doubt when you said it was 65, because even with all the times I've driven up there and back, I wasn't 100% sure it was 70. 65mph would just mean that I'd try to keep it under 75.

I know it was 65 for a long time, because I was always happy to see the 70mph sign at the Missouri border. Plus I-29 has been nothing but one long construction zone between Omaha and Hamburg for the past 3 years so it's not like the speed limit matters anyway.

As much as I hate being stuck behind some dumbass going 45 in the 55 construction zones every freaking time I drive through, I'm glad they're fixing it... at one time it looked like it had been 30 years since they last paved I29, and the patchwork in most places was awful.

That is by far, not an exclusive Kansas problem.

I put in an above average number of highway miles per year, and from my experience, it is usually some woman on her cell phone, that feels entitled to the left lane.

I think that still applies to Americans. However, if you were to get your international DL in Europe, I would imagine it would be just as hard as getting a national one there. Of course with the whole EU, they might not even have national ones. In either case, I'm sure it's still a huge pain the ass which, in turn, makes their roads safer.

There are 89 laws that go into effect in Kansas on Friday, July 1, 2011.

One of note, the new DUI law. Don't drink and drive in KS unless you like blowing into the little alcohol detector thingy they will install on your car.

Tougher Kansas DUI law goes into effect

7/1/2011
By the Salina Journal

A new and tougher drunken driving law goes into effect today in Kansas that will require first-time offenders to use devices on their vehicles to prevent them from driving while intoxicated.

According to a news release from the Kansas Department Transportation, the law passed by the 2011 Legislature requires motorists convicted of driving under the influence to use interlock devices on their vehicles, creates a system to track repeat offenders and strengthens most penalties.

Some highlights of the new law:

n Failure of a breath test with a result between 0.08 and 0.15, on the first occurrence, will bring a 30-day suspension followed by six months of ignition-interlock device if your record is clear and 12 months of interlock if you have a prior open container violation or three or more moving violations.

n Failure of a breath test with a result over 0.15 the first time, or over 0.08 on a second or subsequent occurrence will bring a one-year suspension followed by ignition interlock (length of interlock is dependent on priors).

n Refusal of a breath, blood or urine test brings a one-year suspension, followed by ignition-interlock requirement (length of interlock is dependent on priors), regardless of how many previous Kansas DUIs a person has.

The new law also creates a central repository that will give law enforcement, prosecutors and judges access to drivers' records, making it easier to track repeat offenders.

God knows the requirements should be tougher to get a license.

Like that will stop people from having their "friends" that haven't been drinking blow into it for them.

The problem with that is where we're going, we don't need roads.

You're assuming people like that have friends that won't be drinking.
