Gladiator Round 1, Match 18: sofa king vs. pr_capone

sofa king

M-16 military rifle with 20 rounds

No backup weapon

Time to plan: 55 seconds

pr_capone

M-1 Garand semiautomatic rifle with bayonet (8 bullets)

Backup bowie knife

Time to plan: 115 seconds

Venue:

Waist deep in the Amazon river

Starting distance: 834 feet

Groves 07-05-2011 06:22 PM

I vote for the "fish with teeth".

Old Dog 07-05-2011 06:23 PM

Not knowing which is actually a better marksman I shall abstain until we hear from the competitors but if going strictly off of the weapon and environmental factors I would give the edge to Sofa King.
PR has the backup weapons, but only 8 rounds and the M-1 is roughly 2 pounds heavier (10 1/2 to 8 1/2 or so). Not a huge issue, but waist deep in the river it may be.

I wonder which weapon does better in water? If you jam up wading around in there, you're a dead man.

Neither one would have a big issue assuming both had been properly maintained prior to the fight and further assuming it didn't go on for an extremely prolonged period of time (I see no reason it should if either of them can shoot).

It really would boil down to their abilities. The effective range on both are comparable.

mlyonsd 07-05-2011 06:35 PM

Comes down to who is the best shot. In this case I go with the couch guy only because he has more rounds.

Rain Man 07-05-2011 06:50 PM

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with the more modern weapon with a bigger magazine. I looked them up and they both are well within their range at 834 feet, but since the M-16 has a longer effective range I'm going to assume that it can be fired with greater accuracy by your average planeteer.

pr_capone 07-05-2011 06:54 PM

In the Army, I qualified as sharpshooter.

Just sayin.

Hammock Parties 07-05-2011 06:56 PM

pr capone has military training and an extra weapon. I'm willing to bet sofa king wastes his bullets.

so you got between 24-35 of 40. Keeping in mind that only four of those 40 targets are 300 yards, I assume you missed at least 3 of those 4. The range given here is near that 300 yard mark......

decisions, decisions

He's 30ish.....I highly doubt he had training with the M1. If he had the M-16 (which he likely shot, A2 I'm guessing) I would see a clear winner. As it is, I must hear from Sofa King with his 12 extra bullets and the gun that's easier to handle.

Marksman 23-29
Sharpshooter 30-35
Expert 36-40

I scored 34.

You are correct, my training primarily consisted of the M-16 and M9. I do have some experience with an M1 though honestly I've only fired about 50 rounds.

Other things to take into consideration. If we are in the Amazon, I am likely better trained at camouflaging myself as well as finding appropriate cover and concealment. With the added time bonus, I could situate myself and simply camp his ass. If we both run out of ammunition, I have the advantage as I can remove the bayonet and dual wield it along with the Bowie.

Old Dog 07-05-2011 07:13 PM

don't know why I was thinking 24.....

My vote goes to pr_capone

Sweet Daddy Hate 07-05-2011 07:29 PM

Capone wins.

His spot will be at the bottom of the amazon river, riddled with bullets.

KurtCobain 07-05-2011 08:15 PM

Wyatt Earp 07-05-2011 08:18 PM

Better gun, more than 3x the bullets, fairly close quarters. There's no way i should lose this. I've shot a hell of a lot of deer at that distance, and those are 1 shotters. The water if anything hurts him a hell of a lot more. his 6 shells will be gone in no time.

I KNEW I should have waited to vote....I screwed up. Given this info, I would have voted Sofa King

MIAdragon 07-05-2011 08:29 PM

The 16 had 100+ yrd range advantage. Ill go with sofa.

Either is accurate at 300 yards, that really isn't an issue here.

It wasn't the darts that swayed your vote? or would have swayed your vote you say?

With an M-16?

If not, then you have no idea how to handle that weapon properly. Yeah, you have the basic know hows on how to handle a weapon but a shotgun is completely different from an M-16.

"Look at me! I can hit a bright orange target with a weapon that spreads its load over a large area!"

Have you ever hit a target from 300 yards out with a rifle? I have.

Here is a cookie for your accomplishments.

So now you have gone from touting your prowess on a completely different style of gun, but now you are bringing in a weapon that is not even mentioned in the scenario.

While I concede that you have the superior weapon, you merely have more ammunition.

Did you get marksman with an M1?

Ming the Merciless 07-05-2011 11:00 PM

m16 will jam

Hammock Parties 07-05-2011 11:36 PM

Since you're both in the water, who's taller?

The taller person is a bigger target.

Fritz88 07-06-2011 03:25 AM

Damn, tough one.

Capone looks for more tree leaves for camouflage. As he bends over to pick up some, he is stung by a deadly Amazonian snake right in his left buttcheek. He dies instantly. Sofa finds him 3 days later and claims he killed him. Sofa is killed in the next battle.

Nope. Have you ever shot a M1? Doubt it. I bet when you shot your targets you were nice and steady, using a rest. Don't forget you're in a moving river this time.... those extra bullets would be a really nice addition to your arsenal...

Yes. An orange moving target a far distance for that weapon. Not as easy as you make it out to be, otherwise everyone would be hitting over 40. Lotta hand eye coordination involved, which would come in handy in a river gunfight.

Plenty of deer have died at that distance. 30-06, 25-06 and 7mm are my 3 favorite weapons. The 30-06 was my grandpas, and it was open sights for a lot of years. The last doe i shot last year came with my buddies M4.

I'm tall and slender. Tall enough to get out of the water, slender enough that'd i'd have you floating down the river long before you could touch me.

sorry pone but you got stuck with and inferior fire arm.
