ESPN is under fire Thursday for creating and publishing the Photoshopped image above of Michael Vick(notes) with a white face to accompany a column in ESPN The Magazine entitled "What if Michael Vick were white?"

After immediate backlash to the image, which was also posted on ESPN's website, editors replaced the online picture with a regular photograph of Vick. The website then reversed course and, as of 2:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, had restored the original, controversial image to the top of the online story.

The picture and headline accompany a thoughtful piece by noted cultural critic Toure on how Vick's race has shaped both the positive and negative aspects of his life. The author dismisses the hypothetical question posed in the article's title saying that changing Vick's race would be to fundamentally change the athlete so much as to render him unknowable.

I mean, who would this white Vick be? [...] When you alter his race, it's like those Back to the Future movies where someone goes back in time, inadvertently changes one small thing about his parents' dating history and then the person starts to disappear. If Vick had been born to white parents, you wouldn't even be reading this right now. That Vick would have had radically different options in life compared with the Vick who grew up in the projects of Newport News, Va., where many young black men see sports as the only way out.

On his Twitter account, Toure said he asked editors not to use "What if Michael Vick were white?" as the title to the article. He later said he wasn't consulted about the image choice. "Judge me on the story," he wrote, "not the art."

If you ever wonder why it's difficult to have intelligent, measured discussions about race in this country, look no further than the picture above. A fine author writes a thought-provoking piece about how the color of your skin has some bearing on the person you become. It molds you like a number of other factors like upbringing, class and parenting. He goes beyond the usual platitudes that we throw into racial discussions so as not to seem insensitive or trite. And all of that is ignored because of a race-baiting headline and a cheap Photoshop job.

People are too sensitive about stuff like this.

Vick was brought up around some scary people. That doesn't mean the backlash from everyday society would have been the same had it been a white QB.

No, the point of the article is that question is worthless. It is an oversimplification and doesn't achieve anything by being asked or discussed because of how many other factors go into the situation. It wasn't excusing Vick's actions because of his background as your post suggests.

If you really want to draw this out to the end, if Vick were white he wouldn't have the foot speed or the same type of athleticism as he has, and would not have had the same career.

But he would be smarter, have a better arm, make more accurate throws, be more of a leader in the locker room, command more respect, be a better team player and not a me me me guy. Heck he would have won the damn superbowl in the ATL.

Guys, I can do this all day.

If Vick was white he would've gotten terrific grades at a great school, gotten accepted to a top tier university and gone on to graduate with three degrees and eventually cure cancer.

But he was born black and never had white privilege so he's stuck making millions playing a sport at which he had no natural or biological predisposition towards succeeding at and did it all despite his skin color.

I'm starting to think about 4 people in America read beyond this article's title.

Based on the title, why the hell should anyone read the article? I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything for bypassing the article and going straight into making fun of it.

Would Vick have never been a college QB, not being able to rise to that level by beating people with athleticism? Just another college QB who wound up selling insurance or something?

Well, with race in sports come stereotypes...

In the NFL, if you're a QB and you're black, most people are going to assume that the black QB is:

More athletic - will tuck and run it and can at times be one of the faster players on the field.

Not as great of a student of the game as a white QB - let's his god given abilities and natural talent take over as opposed to studying the other teams defensive formations, holes and weaknesses.

Not as good of a team leader - Flashier ego, makes stupid decisions off the field, sometimes bad PR, brotha gotta get paid.


Some of which are true given past players histories...but it certainly doesn't mean that ALL black QB's are like that. I even will go to a degree and say that the video game world has manipulated people's thinking. To add to my first stereotype, most black QB's in video games are fast lol. You won't find too many white QB's that are fast in Madden...maybe Tebow but I dunno.
