English Premier League thread

Didn't want to clutter up the MLS/Sporting thread and thought it would be nice to have a thread to discuss the EPL.

As I said in the MLS thread, I'm a fan of Liverpool.

Los Pollos Hermanos 09-02-2011 06:02 PM

Is there a list of approved topics that I can view before starting new threads?

Arsenal play Swansea tomorrow (err, next week, apparently). Hopefully, they don't lose again.

When they sing that at Anfield-goosebumps!

KCTitus 09-02-2011 07:06 PM

ManU fan here...that game against Arsenal...was amazing. There was more scoring in that game than a Chiefs game.

RickObie 09-02-2011 07:07 PM

Man U put a beat down on them!

Trevo_410 09-02-2011 07:36 PM

not that much of a serious epl fan since im real new to soccer but for some reason i always like playing with aston villa on fifa so i guess they're my fav :)

Los Pollos Hermanos 09-09-2011 03:37 PM

This week's LFC match is on Fox Soccer Plus. I went to sign up and DirecTV wants $15 a month for it. That's way too much. I guess if I want to watch I'll have to find it online. Last time I watched a match online it was in Danish.

Swanman 09-09-2011 03:45 PM

I am a Tottenham fan so a bit of a rough start. I am glad they let Eric Crouch go. He never really impressed me besides being 27 feet tall.

- Spain's pro Soccer leauge (Only because of the Real M./ Barcelona rivalry)

In that order.

Buck 12-05-2011 04:41 PM

Serie A and La Liga.

|Zach| 12-05-2011 04:43 PM

The EPL is kinda like the NFL in that it feels so lifeless and sanitized at times beholden so much big corporate bullshit.

Bundesliga is a blue collar league with great fans and players passionate about the game. It is also a very competitive league.

Tough loss today. Controlled most of the game just couldn't get it past the keeper.

I think I'm giving up on Andy Carroll.

Been following Bundesliga since the 1990s. Great great teams and rivalries. They have the highest attendance rate amongst all European soccer competitions.

This year, the race is really tight between FCB, BVB, Mönchengladbach and Bremen.

I got a chance to attend a game last September in the Allainz Arena. Great experience.

Germans are ****ing great at playing soccer. You can never count them out until the whistle has been blown.

WoodDraw 12-05-2011 05:08 PM

The problem with the premier league is that you have two teams that are fake in Chelsea and Man City. And they distort the rest of the league. But top to bottom, I still think it's the most entertaining league in the world.

Follow the German league and you will realize that people are choosing the EPL because of the high profile teams.

It's fun to watch but lately, the massive spending by Man City and Chelsea is just making it a Daniel Snyder heaven.

WoodDraw 12-05-2011 05:14 PM

I've also started watching South American soccer quite a bit more. I got a bit hooked on it while I was living there.

There are some fun leagues and players.

I do think the Bundesliga is great. You really can't compare the atmosphere there to the plastic fans that make up alot of the premier league. It helps that Germany still has terraces, while the premier league keeps pricing everyone out.

But Chelsea and City have ****ed things up. Hopefully financial fair play helps out...

memyselfI 12-05-2011 06:08 PM

I root for Fulham because of my man, Clint Dempsey. Other than that, anyone playing ManU.

There's something about EPL I can't get into. I don't know what it is.

Bundesliga appeals to me for family reasons as well as competitive. It's also fun to listen to a Bayern match in German!

WoodDraw 12-05-2011 07:44 PM

I still want to get to Germany to see some games. I've gotten to see Arsenal play a few times, and Barca once at camp nou. I was in SA for Copa America this last summer which was fun too. Traveling around with the South American fans was pretty fun. Also got to see Palermo's last game for Boca, which was pretty fun to be around. And see River relegated.

But I've never been to Germany. Still wish I could have gone to that WC in '06. Still pissed off we don't have a good '18 WC host. I was really looking forward to a Spain, or England, or Netherlands trip. No desire to go to Russia though...

After '14, the world cup doesn't seem very appetizing for a while with Russia and then Qatar or whatever desert kingdom they picked.

It just went final. Both City and United get knocked out in the group round.

After starting out real shitty, Tottenham is on fire and up to third in the table. Hopefully they can get back into the Champions League, if not contend for the EPL title. Getting rid of Peter Crouch really helped the club.

Buck 12-07-2011 03:59 PM

Yeah, so both London teams advanced and both Manchester teams didn't. Weird.

KCTitus 12-07-2011 05:12 PM

Been a fan of ManU since the days of Eric Cantona in the mid 90's...yeah ManU is the Yankees of the EPL, but they're the only team I follow that consistently wins championships.

Being a Bayern Munich fan, I take joy in seeing Alex's team not make it. I still have not forgotten the 1999 UEFA championship game.

Buck 12-28-2011 07:38 AM

Did you guys here what happened in the Dutch Eredivisie?

Some fan ran on the field during Ajax vs. AZ.

He attacked the AZ goalkeeper. The AZ goalkeeper fought back and repeatedly kicked the guy.

The ref gave the AZ goalkeeper a red card and the AZ manager pulled his team off the field in protest.

The game is now going to be replayed in its entirety (0-0) next month (even though Ajax was up 1-0 in the 37th minute) with no fans allowed in the stadium. The red card decision has been reversed and the GK can play.

****ing weird.

So they are going to resume the game from the 37th minute then? at a later day or somethin? and no fans can watch the match in the stadium...

I'd submit that the opening stanzas of KFF [oh-ho-oh-oooooooh] has put a smile on my face more consistently and reliably over the years than any other song.

Nope. 0-0 from the first minute.

Reaper16 12-28-2011 10:38 AM

I'm more of a La Liga man, but I do like to watch EPL and I usually watch it with a comfortable disinterest in the teams. It's crazy like the NBA to me in a lot of ways (but I have an NBA team. Whatever), which I like. Any team could die in a trailer fire and it would be a good thing to me because it'd just be another crazy event to happen in the EPL.

But lately I've found myself actually rooting for Tottenham. I've been getting my girlfriend into soccer and half-jokingly suggested that she should join the Jew Army and be a Spurs fan (she is Jewish), but now I've sorta' become, well, not a fan (yet?) but someone that wants Tottenham to succeed.

Buck 12-28-2011 07:28 PM

I've been a Man-U fan since Giggs was a wee lad, and love watching Nani and Rooney. But I've got to say I've become quite the fan of Fernando Torres, and really come to enjoy watching Chelsea play. Hated Torres in the WC, but the guy hustles like he's the most overperforming scrub on earth, only he's as talented as the best of them when he gets touch.

Los Pollos Hermanos 12-29-2011 08:40 AM

I saw that and was so pist when the goalie got the Red Card. That ref is a ****ing idiot, wish someone would have socked him in the mouth. The manager did the right thing and I'm glad the league is making it right and reversing the red. But you are right that whole thing is bizarre.
