Hindsight being 20/20 and all...

Rewind the clock back to 2009 before Pioli and Haley were brought in. Clark just got rid of Peterson and Herm and the two most important, non playing, positions on a football team are still vacant.

Do you back up a truck full of money for Cowher to come back to KC to be HC/GM? Do you push for Rex Ryan? Who would be your pick for HC?

As for the GM position, I will admit my ignorance of who was available at the time so I cannot comment. Who else was out there that had better cred than Pioli?

MMXcalibur 11-22-2011 01:54 PM

I bring in a chicken with one leg and no eyes.

OnTheWarpath15 11-22-2011 01:55 PM

No need to use hindsight. I wanted DeCosta from Baltimore and Jim Schwartz.

Now, using hindsight, I would have gone Rex Ryan with DeCosta - who probably would have been a better match since they worked together in Baltimore.

Sofa King 11-22-2011 01:59 PM

I'd hire Jim Harbaugh.

BoneKrusher 11-22-2011 02:00 PM

all i know is this ain't workin.

Micjones 11-22-2011 02:06 PM

I'd be fine with the current arrangement IF:
1. Haley is allowed to get HIS guy at QB.
2. Pioli forces Haley to hire a competent OC and do his job without interference.

I know that won't happen though.

Rasputin 11-22-2011 02:09 PM

I remember thinking to myself "self who ever the coach or GM is hope to God we don't trade away draft picks for another reject rehash unstartable for any other team QB because he is going be old and suck for a few years and get replaced with another old useless reject QB that's not going get a start other than here because that's what Carl Peterson would do."

I can honestly say (and it can be found in the archives) that I wanted Doug Whaley and Jim Schwartz as our front office even before the hires were made. I wasn't upset about the Pioli hire, but a little disappointed.

Given the benefit of hindsight, that's still the duo I'd want to go with.

That would be a sweet compromise for the two.

You pick the QB. I pick the OC.

Predarat 11-22-2011 02:29 PM

I wouldn't mind Rex Ryan, but after Herm, do they really want to go for another former Jets Head Coach??

Edit: Oh yeah for got about the space time continuem, he would not have coached the Jets.

This pretty much nailed it. However, I do think that Haley's willingness to do unpredictable things is an asset on offense. Maybe Haley gets to override 10 percent of play calls.

I wanted Jim Schwartz and Eric DeCosta.

Rasputin 11-22-2011 02:39 PM

Too bad we couldn't have just combined Martys defense with Dick V offense, for the same 10 year streatch. What a team that would have made.

I don't get this? Cassel has been his boy just as much as Piolis. I'm not buying Haley not wanting Cassel.

The very first game without Cassel, they bring Muir down to the field out of the booth and Haley takes over the direct communication with the QB via the headset.

Something smells rotten...

Yeah, they were doing things with Palko that they never did with Cassel.

I'd say the Cassel era is officially over. Woo Hoo

I don't care about that. Well I do but that is different perception. I've heard Pioli talking about how him & Haley stay on the same page at the end of the day after talks about what's best for Chiefs and they keep Clark in the loop. So it's both of there decesions to go with and stick with Cassel for untill he get hand " injury ". Cassel is on both Pioli and Haley as far as I'm concerned neither get a get out of jail free card.

Reaper16 11-22-2011 03:02 PM

There was a sizable contingent of the board (Drafturbators, I think they were called) who were on the DeCosta train. Little hindsight needed here because some of us had foresight all along.

ct 11-22-2011 03:07 PM

He had already hired Pioli long before Herm was let go. Clark wanted Piolo to keep Herm, which he did for too long in critical early off season weeks. That was BIG part of the problem!

This. I wanted DeCosta and Schwartz as well.

whoman69 11-22-2011 03:30 PM

Pioli brings Cassel. There is no alternate timeline with Pioli in place. All roads end in misery.

DaWolf 11-22-2011 03:38 PM

I was all for DeCosta or Pioli. I was not on the Dominik bandwagon, and didn't get on the Polian train once I read more about him.

I don't know how much we can tell about DeCosta, he's kind of in the same place that Pioli was in that you know his organization is successful and he is a key cog, but how would he do on his own in a totally new organization? How much of that is Ozzie Newsome?

Hindsight being what it is, I guess coachingwise you hire Ryan (that coaching class of 2009 is like the draft of 2009). I'm not a great fan of guys that like to hear themselves talking, but on the flip side he knows defense and players want to play for him, which would help us with free agents. That said, it would have been back to Martyball with him in charge, so while he may have gotten us back in the playoffs, I'm not sure how many people would be satisfied going back to a team that grinds out defensively and has their QB on the leash...

007 11-22-2011 03:45 PM

I wanted Fisher but in hindsight I would have gone after Harbaugh.

Ebolapox 11-22-2011 05:24 PM

I wanted bill polian's kid (who's also with indy) and schwartz.

Extra Point 11-22-2011 05:31 PM

I still wanted us to pick Matt Flynn. But then, again, I was wrong about JaFatass.

Consistent1 11-22-2011 06:33 PM

Everybody was excited about Pioli. be honest. The hype was just a little off. There was obviously more in play in New England than him, even if it was dumb luck.

Hammock Parties 11-22-2011 06:33 PM

I was on board with both of these hires at the time. And the Cassel trade.

I'm as dumb as Hunt as Pioli. But more well liked, so I have that going for me.

DeCosta has turned down 2 jobs because he's the GM in waiting when Ozzie retires in 2 years.

He's not leaving there.

I know, I know, Scott Pioli's was not leaving NE either. But DeCosta has removed himself from consideration from several jobs.

he's talking about a GM with more clout.

You can have a personal preference about wanting a GM besides Pioli but at the time he was THE man to get. I still think Pioli can do it, i just think he got off to a rough start. He blew it on his first 3 major decision and has been struggling ever since.

Wrong QB
Wrong HC
decision to not use any Scouts for his first draft
