RUMOR: Cowher to Chargers?

This is a rumor that I heard on the radio (XX1090) this morning. Supposedly this rumor has some merit. The key points that I picked up on:

1. Cowher is interested in the taking over the Chargers as long as AJ Smith is fired along with Turner.

2. He wants full control and wants to bring in his own personnel men (obviously, right?)

3. He wants to go to SD because they have a legit QB, something other teams that made him offers didn't have.

4. Apparently he liked Rivers coming out of the draft more than Ruthlessraper.

Basically, Rivers is a huge draw for Cowher.

acarter25 12-01-2011 10:27 AM

No kidding? Damn that sucks.

Molitoth 12-01-2011 10:27 AM

Maybe it will take him 15 years in San Diego to win a super bowl as well.

L.A. Chieffan 12-01-2011 10:27 AM

la chargers with cowher huh

Nightfyre 12-01-2011 10:27 AM

Please let this happen. I want to see how fast Cowher can disassemble the Chargers.

But we have Tyler Palko, Bill.

I'm not laughing. With Rivers in place, that's unfair to the rest of the division.

notorious 12-01-2011 10:36 AM

Not good news for the AFC West.

Firing Norv is bad for everybody else, no matter who they hire.

Rivers isn't Ben Roethlisberger. Actually not even close. Ben has ice in his veins.

Rivers has vinegar and water in his...

Marty didn't work in SD so they bring in his clone. Good idea.

This. It will basically be the Chargers franchise that Marty ran. Cowher runs his team very similar to Schottenheimer. Now that could mean the they try to dominate the division again. But playoffs, one and done.

FAX 12-01-2011 10:48 AM

If I didn't know better, I'd think that some people are buying into the Sandy Vago hyperbole.

Norv sucks, but he doesn't suck as bad as that team sucks.

A.J. has an eye for talent. He may not have chosen the right coaches but the guy has solid drafts if I am not mistaken.

Yeah, because Cowher never got to or one a Super Bowl. :hmmm:

Chiefs Pantalones 12-01-2011 11:03 AM

Rivers is still head and shoulders above any other QB in this division. He's just having a down year.

AJ hasn't done anything for that roster since Marty left. Hence the slow decline. Just bust after bust, reach after reach.

I can't disagree that he sucks, Mr. Amnorix. But to be fair, Norv can only suck so much. After he's through with his sucking, it's up to his players to suck at their stuff ... like muffed snaps, repeated illegal shifts and formations, bad punts and kicks, etc.

I mean, he is ultimately responsible for the overall suck ... as all head coaches are. But the Vagos have been behaving like buffoons on the field. Realistically, some of that suck has to be put on his players.

If this occurs, we should totally offer Mr. Smith a primo paycheck to fill a position in our scouting department. Maybe the chance for sweet revenge would be sufficient to outweigh the reduced title.

And to expand, only two coaches (Vermiel and Parcells) have ever taken two different teams to the Super Bowl.

My thoughts as well, but, Marty may have been prematurely let go with 14 wins, since he didn't get along with A.J. Smith.

Buck 12-01-2011 01:17 PM

Even though he's not the greatest coach, he's won a superbowl and is about 20 times better than Norm.

Plus he'll light a fire under our guy's asses and maybe Rivers will stop being so complacent.

He's competed in numerous AFC championship games with total $3itbag QB's.

He'd probably sew up River's labia and win 2 SB's there...

whoman69 12-01-2011 01:26 PM

Its hard to make that Super Bowl run with a new organization after a coach has already done it once. Cowher is going to want to dismantle the things he doesn't like, so there could be a rebuilding phase. No coach has ever won a SB with 2 different teams.

That's what Norv is good for... maybe. He's still riding his reputation as the OC for the early-mid 90's Cowboy teams that had an unbelievable load of talent acquired from the freaky Herschel Walker trade.

Norv, Jimmy Jones, and the talent they had all gelled together to create a great team. But neither Norv nor Jones were able to do dick-all without the entire package.

As for Cowher, he was a damn good coach for the Steelers but the Charger organization isn't the Steeler organization. If he does end up the HC for San Diego I wouldn't take it as an auotmatic that they'll begin reeling off AFCW championships and playoff wins. It could collapse into an ignominious pile of shit similar to what happened to Jones in Miami or Norv in Everywhere he's been a head coach.

So fine, bring on Cowher and his cartoon jaw. Rivers isn't just having a bad season, his career is almost over. A lot of people just don't realize it yet.

There isn't a bigger stage in the NFL, unless it's Dallas. SD is a minor league job compared to that.

I don't think he want's a big stage.

I think he likes taking the "little guy" up to the big stage. He's a Pitt/Cleveland guy.

He's an underdog fan and quit in his prime "for family."

I could see him taking a KC/Titans/Bucs type gig. Perhaps even a Chicago.

I don't think he want's any part of dealing with what being in the NY/NE area media means...

Point is I think AJ Smith was very good at acquiring talent. Cowher is a better coach than Norv, but is Cowher a better talent evaluator than Smith? Personally, I'd be happy to see AJ Smith leave the AFC West.
