DraftPlanet/CasinoPlanet: A Proposal

Every year, we have the debate about when (and if) Draft Planet and Casino Planet should be hidden from the top and when (and if) they should be brought back. This has all been discussed ad nauseum around here, so I won't reiterate everything, but the basic idea is that there's not a LOT of talk in the regular season about the draft (though there is some), and there's not a LOT of talk in the offseason about fantasy sports (though there is some). So, it would be nice to have them both available year-round, but doing so adds another subforum to an already large list at the top of the Lounge. (Yes, you can hide them, but 90% of people don't, and they'd still be there for guests and the like.)

After a brief chat about it in the mod forum, we'd like to propose that the two forums be combined into one, but left up year-round. We'll add prefixes to the forum so that the different topics can be distinguished from each other and filtered if desired. It won't be the cleanest combination ever, but I think it'll be manageable given that people are already used to the hodgepodge of topics they sort through in the Lounge anyway and that the activity in those forums is comparatively low anyway.

Anyway, this thread is mainly to see if there are any strong objections to doing so. I might add a poll to this thread later if necessary, but the current thinking is that we'll do it unless a bunch of people hate it.

Discus.

DaFace 01-02-2012 07:27 PM

Oh, and we'd most likely just keep all the mods in those subforums (but obviously add them to the new dual-forum). There may be other minor changes there, but I have to figure out if the software can do it.

SAUTO 01-02-2012 07:27 PM

Consolidation of forums is always a good idea. Especially with prefixes available. I vote "good idea".

Sure you do. If you're serious, feel free to explain why you object. "**** NO" doesn't add much to the conversation, though.

ROFL...that's what I figured.

I, honestly, hardly ever venture into any of our subforums except the Media Center, so I have no idea who goes in there and who doesn't.

LMAO

RealSNR 01-02-2012 07:36 PM

My only concern is when we do mock drafts and the like. It'd be nice to have a special mod for that subforum so they can change stuff up in the thread as need be.

Other than that I see no problem. Although I think it's absolutely idiotic that some people bitch about the clutter of subforums before they get to the lounge, and I'd love to be able to piss them off.

Hammock Parties 01-02-2012 07:36 PM

Draftplanet and Casinoplanet couldn't be more different.

Leave them separate, leave them both up at the top, but give people the option to hide whatever subforums they want.

Simple.

To clarify, Dartgod, OTWP and Hamas will all have mod powers in there as they do in their respective forums now. I'm trying to see what options we have for more than basic mod powers in the software, but I'll wait to figure that out until the combination happens (if it does) first.

SAUTO 01-02-2012 07:39 PM

I agree it would be idiotic to complain about subforums at the top.

While true, you could say the same about religion and politics. Not to mention discussions about movies vs. how to remove a virus.

The issue with the option to hide the subforums is that there's no way to default forums to "hidden" in the software, so new users and people who aren't observant have a shit ton up there.

The Casino/Draft/Religion/Virus/Movie/Politics sub-forum!

AustinChief 01-02-2012 07:43 PM

The question is more about the audience and not the topics...

Is there enough overlap with those two forums and the people using them? I would say yes off-hand but I haven't really looked in to it.

On a related topic... DaFace, I bet I can find a way to auto-hide subforums as well. If you want, I'll look in to it.

Feel free. I'd bet we could do a mass hiding for new peeps pretty easily with a simple query, but I could never figure out how to edit default settings for new users.

1ChiefsDan 01-02-2012 07:52 PM

I vote I don't care.

I just bookmarked the Lounge, very rarely venture into any of the subforums and have never noticed any clutter at the top of my screen.

crazycoffey 01-02-2012 07:52 PM

Just call it "Fantasy Planet" to cover betting, fantasy teams and the many many mock drafts

I know one thing, I don't want to have to sift through dumb betting threads to read about draft prospects.

That's a fair criticism. I guess the thinking is that the two topics are active primarily at different times of the year, so it wouldn't be an issue. The prefixes would also help some, but not entirely.

I suppose there's an option in here of doing a non-destructive "merge" of the two where we leave all the old stuff in one forum or another and give it a try for a year. We'd have to figure out the details of how to make that work, but it might be possible if we're nervous that it might suck.

The betting threads are stickied and only run during the football seasons. And there are just a few FF threads.

then it's your problem for not knowing you can ignore threads you have no interest in.

Valiant 01-02-2012 07:59 PM

Draftplanet should get dibs in the lounge or its own separate forum during the offseason..

Each forum has about a month's worth of threads per page right now... CasinoPlanet wasn't touched from the end of Feb through the end of June last year, and DraftPlanet generated one page of threads from Oct until now.

If you think that's even too much sifting, there are prefixes.

kstater 01-02-2012 08:04 PM

I'll agree to it on one condition: Bring back tags.

For me, personally? I actually agree. I almost wish the sticky function didn't exist.

But my guess is that most people like stickying prayer threads. I'm certainly not going to push for doing that differently.

ok just looked in to it. The only solutions I can see (besides superhacking of the code) is to set that field in the DB to have a default value.

The table is usertextfield and the column is excludeforumids. If we set that column to have a default value of 2,28,22,30,29 then the following subforums would by default be hidden...
Media Center
DC
Pictures
CasinoPlanet
DraftPlanet

Obviously this would change after combining them... not the best solution but it certainly would work.

Dartgod 01-02-2012 08:23 PM

As moderator of the Casino forum, I strongly object.

Or do it anyway, I don't care.

I don't know if this is even remotely considered a request for input.

I've been giving my ****ing input on this topic until I started getting neg rep and a mod openly pondered taking my thread starting priviledges away.

This is a football forum. SUPPORT A DRAFT FORUM by putting it at the top.

I get it, though. We don't really have a mod on CP that gives two shits in draft threads, so the issue doesn't get the voice it deserves.

By combining it with something completely unrelated. Might as well combine it with the pictures thread.

I have literally no voice on the issue, and I go elsewhere for my draft conversation, as have several of the people who dig the draft really hard. What you guys decide to do is your perogative.

I've just been exhausted with the half measures on ChiefsPlanet.

This thread is a request for input.

There will be a permanent sub-forum for the draft, fantasy football, and gambling threads. Two of those are primarily Sept-Jan, and one is primarily Jan-April. The mock draft folks will basically have the forum to themselves from Jan through July, then from Aug-Jan, instead of having a month's worth of threads on the first page, there might be two weeks worth of threads..... and there will be prefixes.

What's the problem?

And the mods responded by promptly moving it to the gambling forum? I can dig it up if I need to.

I rest my case. The mods on this forum do not give a shit about the draft.

2. If you remotely cared about the draft, you'd understand it to be a year round venture.

I'd prefer the draft forum to stay unto itself. What's the real harm?

Well, with the easy ability to ignore thread it shouldn't matter.

Good question, philfree. What IS the harm in adding a permanent draft subforum to the main page when the tools to hide it for uninterested viewers are there?

What was the stat you brought up, DaFace? 90% of people don't use the hide subforum feature.

It really makes no sense for people to bitch about one extra subforum on the Lounge page.

If AustinChief can make it so that n00bs and non-logged in users won't see them up there by default, I'd be OK with that. We've never been able to figure out how to do that in the past.

It takes 2 seconds to set the prefix, and you can probably bookmark it so you would never have to see the casino prefixes. There might be a user-level hack where we could hide certain prefixes for a certain user, but I'd have to look into that.

Personally, I think football sub-forums on a football board are ridiculous... and while I care about the draft, I don't care for all the speculation and mocks. I care about discussing needs and prospects, but don't care to speculate about the same small group of players for several months leading up to the draft. However, I do think the amount of mock drafts and 'who should I start' can be a bit much, so I understand why there's a separate forum.

And sure, it's something worth talking about pretty much year round... the first page of Draft Planet basically goes back to the beginning of November. If we combined the two right now, it would basically push everything from DraftPlanet off the first page that was before 12/25, but the first post on the 2nd page would be from 12/20, then 12/15.

For CasinoPlanet, there were two threads posted between 2/24/11 and 8/4. There are 8 pages from August until now, where DraftPlanet has 2 between 5/29/11 and now. That's almost no overlap. If you're there everyday or even once a week, I'd think you would never have to click the 2nd page or use prefixes to catch all new replies in the combined forum. The biggest overlap will probably be Dec/Jan.

This entire site is shaped directly after the wishes of membership, from the name, logo, policies, and the leaders.

No big whoop. I take my draft conversation to other boards that actually care about it. Just wish this forum would get the **** on board with it.
Wow. I don't know what to say to this. I have no idea what you expected to accomplish with this post. I'm pretty sure this wasn't even directed at me but it still pisses me off. If you want your ideas to make this place more suitable for yourself then consider this thread an invitation to voice your ideas. I personally guarantee coming in with an attitude somewhat similar to that of my ex-wife will get you exactly nowhere.

It's kind of hilarious that someone is mad at this.

Hey, while you're at it why not merge the Media Center with D.C.?
