DraftPlanet/CasinoPlanet: A Proposal
Every year, we have the debate about when (and if) Draft Planet and Casino Planet should be hidden from the top and when (and if) they should be brought back. This has all been discussed ad nauseum around here, so I won't reiterate everything, but the basic idea is that there's not a LOT of talk in the regular season about the draft (though there is some), and there's not a LOT of talk in the offseason about fantasy sports (though there is some). So, it would be nice to have them both available year-round, but doing so adds another subforum to an already large list at the top of the Lounge. (Yes, you can hide them, but 90% of people don't, and they'd still be there for guests and the like.)
After a brief chat about it in the mod forum, we'd like to propose that the two forums be combined into one, but left up year-round. We'll add prefixes to the forum so that the different topics can be distinguished from each other and filtered if desired. It won't be the cleanest combination ever, but I think it'll be manageable given that people are already used to the hodgepodge of topics they sort through in the Lounge anyway and that the activity in those forums is comparatively low anyway. Anyway, this thread is mainly to see if there are any strong objections to doing so. I might add a poll to this thread later if necessary, but the current thinking is that we'll do it unless a bunch of people hate it. Discus. |
Oh, and we'd most likely just keep all the mods in those subforums (but obviously add them to the new dual-forum). There may be other minor changes there, but I have to figure out if the software can do it.

Not only no but **** NO.

Seriously though what is draft planet? Posted via Mobile Device |

I, honestly, hardly ever venture into any of our subforums except the Media Center, so I have no idea who goes in there and who doesn't. |

I just realized that I used the word "anyway" three times in two sentences in the OP. I hang my head in shame.

My only concern is when we do mock drafts and the like. It'd be nice to have a special mod for that subforum so they can change stuff up in the thread as need be.
Other than that I see no problem. Although I think it's absolutely idiotic that some people bitch about the clutter of subforums before they get to the lounge, and I'd love to be able to piss them off. |
Draftplanet and Casinoplanet couldn't be more different.
Leave them separate, leave them both up at the top, but give people the option to hide whatever subforums they want. Simple. |

I agree it would be idiotic to complain about subforums at the top.
Can I change my vote to **** YEAH! LET'S DO THIS. Posted via Mobile Device |

The issue with the option to hide the subforums is that there's no way to default forums to "hidden" in the software, so new users and people who aren't observant have a shit ton up there. |

The question is more about the audience and not the topics...
Is there enough overlap with those two forums and the people using them? I would say yes off-hand but I haven't really looked in to it. On a related topic... DaFace, I bet I can find a way to auto-hide subforums as well. If you want, I'll look in to it. |

I vote I don't care.
I just bookmarked the Lounge, very rarely venture into any of the subforums and have never noticed any clutter at the top of my screen. |
Just call it "Fantasy Planet" to cover betting, fantasy teams and the many many mock drafts

I know one thing, I don't want to have to sift through dumb betting threads to read about draft prospects.

I suppose there's an option in here of doing a non-destructive "merge" of the two where we leave all the old stuff in one forum or another and give it a try for a year. We'd have to figure out the details of how to make that work, but it might be possible if we're nervous that it might suck. |

then it's your problem for not knowing you can ignore threads you have no interest in. |
Draftplanet should get dibs in the lounge or its own separate forum during the offseason..
|
Quote:
If you think that's even too much sifting, there are prefixes. |
I'll agree to it on one condition: Bring back tags.
|
I'll agree to it on one condition: do not bring back the stupid tags.
|
If you are so worried about clutter, why does every thread about someone's grandmother getting a skinned knee get stickied?
|
YES!!!
Oh. Wrong proposal. |

But my guess is that most people like stickying prayer threads. I'm certainly not going to push for doing that differently. |

The table is usertextfield and the column is excludeforumids. If we set that column to have a default value of 2,28,22,30,29 then the following subforums would by default be hidden... Media Center DC Pictures CasinoPlanet DraftPlanet Obviously this would change after combining them... not the best solution but it certainly would work. |
As moderator of the Casino forum, I strongly object.
Or do it anyway, I don't care. |
I could care less, I hide all the links anyway.

How about you put links to each one individually at the top, but don't have any description under them so that they each only take up half the space?
|
I vote "good idea".
|
Meh.
|
jesus, we've been debating the 1/8th inch of screen space draft planet takes up for like 700 years...
what is this great harm that happens if you just add the draft forum to a football site? are we afraid of mouse wheels catching on fire? a class action suit for causing carpal tunnel? |
I vote we combine the draft planet subforum with the Lounge and turn it into a gigantic "Football Forum"
Just think ... all the Chiefs fans could go to it and talk about football and stuff. T'would be awesome. PBJ |

It's pretty clear the mods just don't give a shit about the NFL draft.
Totally fitting for a board dedicated to the Kansas City Chiefs. Thanks for shitting, yet again, on the draft forum. You guys dedicate yourselves to disappointing, and it shows. |

er... |
what the **** does it matter Direckshun?
Who cares if you have to filter out a few fantasy football threads during football season when no one cares about the draft and vice versa? the two forums belong together |
Quote:
I've been giving my ****ing input on this topic until I started getting neg rep and a mod openly pondered taking my thread starting priviledges away. This is a football forum. SUPPORT A DRAFT FORUM by putting it at the top. I get it, though. We don't really have a mod on CP that gives two shits in draft threads, so the issue doesn't get the voice it deserves. No big whoop. I take my draft conversation to other boards that actually care about it. Just wish this forum would get the **** on board with it. |

I have literally no voice on the issue, and I go elsewhere for my draft conversation, as have several of the people who dig the draft really hard. What you guys decide to do is your perogative. I've just been exhausted with the half measures on ChiefsPlanet. |

There will be a permanent sub-forum for the draft, fantasy football, and gambling threads. Two of those are primarily Sept-Jan, and one is primarily Jan-April. The mock draft folks will basically have the forum to themselves from Jan through July, then from Aug-Jan, instead of having a month's worth of threads on the first page, there might be two weeks worth of threads..... and there will be prefixes. What's the problem? |
Quote:
And the mods responded by promptly moving it to the gambling forum? I can dig it up if I need to. I rest my case. The mods on this forum do not give a shit about the draft. |
Quote:
2. If you remotely cared about the draft, you'd understand it to be a year round venture. |
I'd prefer the draft forum to stay unto itself. What's the real harm?
|

Good question, philfree. What IS the harm in adding a permanent draft subforum to the main page when the tools to hide it for uninterested viewers are there?
What was the stat you brought up, DaFace? 90% of people don't use the hide subforum feature. It really makes no sense for people to bitch about one extra subforum on the Lounge page. |

Personally, I think football sub-forums on a football board are ridiculous... and while I care about the draft, I don't care for all the speculation and mocks. I care about discussing needs and prospects, but don't care to speculate about the same small group of players for several months leading up to the draft. However, I do think the amount of mock drafts and 'who should I start' can be a bit much, so I understand why there's a separate forum. And sure, it's something worth talking about pretty much year round... the first page of Draft Planet basically goes back to the beginning of November. If we combined the two right now, it would basically push everything from DraftPlanet off the first page that was before 12/25, but the first post on the 2nd page would be from 12/20, then 12/15. For CasinoPlanet, there were two threads posted between 2/24/11 and 8/4. There are 8 pages from August until now, where DraftPlanet has 2 between 5/29/11 and now. That's almost no overlap. If you're there everyday or even once a week, I'd think you would never have to click the 2nd page or use prefixes to catch all new replies in the combined forum. The biggest overlap will probably be Dec/Jan. |

Hey, while you're at it why not merge the Media Center with D.C.?
