Tribe To Sue Beer Companies For Alcohol Problems Published: February 9, 2012, 11:56 AM LINCOLN, NE - An American Indian tribe says it will sue some of the world's largest beer makers for knowingly contributing to alcohol-related problems on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota announced Thursday it will demand $500 million from five international beer manufacturers for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation. The lawsuit also targets four off-site beer stores in Whiteclay, Nebraska, a town with a population of about a dozen people on the South Dakota border that sells nearly 5 million cans of beer annually. The Connecticut-sized reservation has struggled with alcoholism and poverty for generations, despite an alcohol ban since 1832. Pine Ridge legalized alcohol in 1970, but restored the ban two months later. This thread isn't intended to be racist so get that shit outta here you ****ers. I just find it ridiculous that someone is willing to sue beer companies because they drink too much beer. |
I'm suing the porn company.

So, Sioux sue.

So why don't you whiny bastards just drink yourselves to death and get rid of everyone's problems? |
I wonder if that tribe operates any casinos.

They stole the idea from The Rev.

I think someone has been hitting the peace pipe in excess.

Damn I was going to post this. Thought it might have to be moved to DC. I hate the blame anybody you can sue mentality.
|
they'll spend it all on booze
|
Pine Ridge has major gang problems. They should probably try to come up with realistic solutions to problems instead of stupid lawsuits.
|
I'm going to sue the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota because their lawsuit makes me have racist thoughts.

Tribe Sues Beer Distributors And Stores By Kellee Azar Published: February 10, 2012, 6:38 AM The Oglala Sioux Tribe has filed a lawsuit against the small town of Whiteclay, Nebraska, which is just 300 feet away from the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is illegal to consume or even possess alcohol on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. But, in Whiteclay, it's a whole other story. So now, the Oglala Sioux Tribe is suing four beer stores in the Whiteclay area along with some big beer distributors such as Budweiser, Pabst, Coors, and Busch. "They are helping them violate the law and this lawsuit is about holding them responsible,” Oglala Sioux Tribe's Attorney Tom White said. And even though most of these beer companies tell you to drink responsibly, 85 percent of Oglala Sioux Native American families are affected by alcoholism. "The cost to the Ogalala Sioux tribe and to us is staggering," White said. Now, the Oglala Sioux Tribe is going after Whiteclay over how much beer stores there sell. "You cannot sell 4.9 million, 12-ounce cans of beer and wash your hands like Pontius Pilate and say that we've got nothing to do with the fact that it’s being smuggled 250 feet away," White said. The lawsuit filed Thursday asks the beer industry for $500 million to help repair damage done to the reservation. The town of Whiteclay has fewer than a dozen residents yet it sells more than 13,000 cans of beer a day. Another update. |
Pffft...they've been trying to get those beer stores shut down for the last 20 years, it's just not going to happen. 13,000 cans of beer/day is pretty freaking staggering though.
|
"Helping them violate the law."
That's the kind of stuff I hate. You knowingly break the law, it's on you. |
Just change the name of the town to Miller Time Nebraska
|
I usually hate to do math this early in the morning, but 13,000 cans of beer/day equals one 12 pack going out the door every minute of the 19hrs that liquor stores are allowed to be open in NE.

Alcoholic sues tribe for gambling problems.

Our native brethren were fermenting everything they could get their hands on before the Europeans arrived. Take away their beer and they'll start cooking up squash liquor.
Personally, I feel like I should sue for a couple of peyote trips that didn't turn out quite the way I expected. FAX |

My buddy says this all the time. |
When faced with a lack of alcohol, many natives around here resort to huffing paint or filtering rubbing alcohol through loaves of bread.
Beer seems to be the safer route. |

They never should have knowingly exposed you to peyote. |
If they win, this could open the alcohol companies up to some major liability from Ireland.

I’m going to sue them for sucking so bad my ancestors moved here leaving me stuck with shitty beer. |
the level of fail is huge, a town with a population of 12 is selling 13k cans of beer a day? WTF?
Where are the tribal police? Tribal land is federally protected and local police have zero jurisdiction on tribal land so the tribes have their own law enforcement. I do have a solution: tribes should just start growing weed--everywhere. Grow it, smoke it and do it all for free and if the feds have a problem with it tell the to **** off. |

Fine. Let them sue and win. Then sue them for the moving expenses we incurred a few years back.
|
So if a native american went into one of these liquor stores and was REFUSED service because they were a native american, would that be grounds for a successful discrimination claim?
Seems like yet another line of defense to assert, along with the obvious ones. |
I need to open a store there ..
|
Maybe we should take their land and send them off to some place really remote.

This will never make it to court. Budweiser will agree to sign a treaty and wind up settling for some beads.

Not sure the Indian Tribes should be opening up this door. If they can sue the beer companies, can't all of the gamblers at their Indian Casinos turn around and sue them on similar grounds. This is just a stupid lawsuit, people need to take responsibility for their actions.

You'd think they'd get even enough robbing through the casinos.

I just thought of something. I've never been to an Indian casino. They sell liquor in those, right?

I need to find someone to sue because I'm a fat out of shape old guy not making the money I believe I am entitled to. Anyone have any suggestions?
Sara Lee for all the cheesecakes I've eaten? Chipotle for the burritos? My school teachers because they failed me? My best friend because they were my enablers? The local liquor store who sold me all the Heinekens I drank? The place I bought the cigars? Vaseline and Kleenex for all the times I whacked off? Mirage Casino for letting me gamble? I need a few bucks.... LOL |
