Is there a single better site for breaking sports news than CP?

I don't know how many times I've told someone about some "breaking" sports news and been asked where I got the info and when I tell them I'm a member of Chiefs Planet I get that look that says "why would you know that from a Chiefs site?" So of course I have to explain that this place is about much more than just the Chiefs.

Got me to wondering if you folks find any other single site so informative for news and/or breaking news on not only football stuff, but a lot of other sports news as well. ESPN.com isn't even as fast with little things that come from twitter and such... of course being a "respected sports news voice" (haha) I know they aren't going to do a story on a lot of things until there's really a story to write so....

With so many different people looking over so many different sites and sources I imagine it makes good sense that a bulletin board can be much faster at breaking things than the ESPN's of the world, however I've never been a member of another board so my experience is contained here.

Am I full of shit (on this I mean) or is CP THE go to source for news and breaking news for you as well?

jd1020 03-07-2012 11:28 AM

I'd say ESPN is pretty good at it.

ToxSocks 03-07-2012 11:29 AM

Thread should be re-titled.

"Is there a single better site for breaking CHIEFS news than CP?"

I'd say probably not.

Gonzo 03-07-2012 11:29 AM

Pretty much...

If it's not posted, then reposted, then three-posted here, it's not important.

Mr_Tomahawk 03-07-2012 11:29 AM

It goes both ways....

CP may be the fastest outlet to find breaking news...but it also spews a bunch of shi*t too.

I find it to be quite informative for other news too so I didn't restrict it.

For instance I informed a Rams fan friend that the Rams were said to be interested in trading out of the 2 spot in the draft when that was posted here. I knew it from CP... he didn't know it at all.

If you're following everyone who posts anything about sports at any given time then I suppose that would work as "a single site" that is better at breaking news. I'm not sure I'd rely on that as an overall breaking news site as much as I would CP just because I wouldn't be following every potential source. JMO.

If you follow sports fans, which most people here probably do, and a few news guys that break stories, you're going to see it pretty fast. It just gets retweeted by other people even if you miss the original tweet at the time.
All the ESPN, FOX sports, and Yahoo guys get it on twitter first before anywhere else these days. Because it's a matter of minutes before it's all over the place, so they just tweet it out to be first.

1) Yes... CP is my main source too
2) No... it's a bulletin board and not always reliable

Not quite a site but Twitter. Other than that I would say no.

Retweets...people talking about things out of nowhere...trending topics.

You don't have to follow every source of info to quickly get breaking news from a given source.

Other than mind-melding with Peter King's secret sources, I don't think there's a better news source than ChiefsPlanet. Chiefs-wise, I mean. And, of course, anal sex-wise.

Whenever I want an update on either of those two topics, this is the place I click.

I was waiting for someone to point that out. That's what I get for trying to get something done at work while I should be concentrating fully on CP. Luckily the stuff after the ... should clarify what you're voting for.

I would suggest that this place breaks everything within moments from politics to national news to NFL-wide. It's not an ideal format. There are better aggregates but none quite so entertaining.

whoman69 03-07-2012 01:33 PM

We get too many troll posts for this to be a real news site.

Jawshco 03-08-2012 04:05 PM

Twitter is probably the quickest news source for most everything, but this site has the quickest response to news that I've seen. You may have wade through a bit of tedious trolling, but the most thoughful I've see are here. Both homers and jaded skeptics voice their concerns. Not mention that posting here will definitely help you brush up on your debating skills. People here won't let you get away with unsubstantiated crap. I like that.

007 03-08-2012 04:07 PM

Anything big going on in the world today I usually hear about first on CP. More or less because CP is my first stop when I wake up.

I went with "no" just because it's pretty tough for people who aren't on here all the time to sift through all the BS to find the actual "news." But in terms of getting information quickly after it happens, this place is probably as good as anyplace except Twitter.

The problems there seem to be related to the re-post police. That posse is utterly out of control.

A lot of good, topical, newsworthy information winds up buried in lengthy threads on account of re-post reluctance ... an affliction from which I suffer, by the way.

This poll is FAIL...I agree with the two earlier posts...the answers don't match the question...If there is a better site then the answer is "yes"...if not the answer is "no".

At one time, there were only 2 or 3 sports-related forums that were busier in terms of posts:user ratio. One of them was like the official forum for NC Tarheel basketball...

You don't need to follow everybody because the people that you follow will retweet anything important they read elsewhere. If Schefter posts anything Broncos related it is retweeted at least 5 times by 5 different people on my timeline. News travels fast on twitter.

ha, I deleted the post so now it looks like you just asked that out of nowhere...

It is a scrolling news feed of different topic on Twitter... for example "Kansas City Chiefs" Manning, NFL could all be search terms and if anyone on twitter posts a tweet with those terms, it would scroll by in the feed

AustinChief 03-08-2012 05:20 PM

Here is a crappy example

After going to the page, wait at least a minute for the feed to populate

How about an upaid user just sharing................

Chiefs have formally requested Peyton's agent possible dates/times to visit Arrowhead to discuss the possibility of joining the Chiefs

I think that would be very cool, Mr. AustinChief. Plus, it would add qualitatively to the overall user experience here at good ol' ChiefsPlanet.

Not as good as allowing photos of bare niplets, but good, nonetheless.

I'd imagine it'd be pretty tough to evaluate that. By "big" do we mean the most users? The most posts? The most posts RECENTLY? The most active users?

We're clearly one of the bigger ones out there, but I'd be pretty surprised if we were actually THE biggest team forum out there.

There are several other team sites bigger in terms of all the above. It's tough to be everything for everyone so there are other Chiefs boards that are perfectly fine and fill certain niches in this market. You have homer sites, family sites, blog sites, prediction sites, and then thick skin sites like the Planet.

In the beginning, we were one of the biggest. We were a trend setter. Every time we'd change our forum structures, subforum names, rules, etc - other sites followed quickly behind. Now we've mostly plateaued mostly due to our sucky team. That's not to say a crappy team isn't good for traffic. We have more vent traffic after a tough loss than we do after an amazing win.
