Devon Wylie

Overview
Wylie is an undersized receiver from Fresno State who was actually never a full-time starter during his time there. He has battled injuries throughout his career, and this has greatly hampered his productivity but also has made him a hidden gem of a prospect who has fourth-round value based off his ability to contribute as a starter immediately in the return game. He is a burner whose 40-yard dash time will greatly help and support his grade despite limited playing time at a Western Athletic Conference school.

Analysis
Strengths
Wylie is highly effective as a returner, as he is very decisive and has the speed to make one cut and get upfield to take it the distance. As a receiver, he is very quick off the ball and gets into his route immediately. He understands how to use his quick feet to get off the line without cornerbacks pushing him off his route. He is a good route runner who can get open thanks to his acceleration and ability to break on a dime. He is a consummate deep threat and could be effective running quick screens and getting yards after the catch at the next level.

Weaknesses
Wylie is an undersized receiver who has been limited by injuries throughout his career. Teams will be turned off by his durability and inability to consistently see the field at Fresno State.

So we got a guy who is small and constatnly injured. Fantastic.

Sounds like yet another indictment on the McCluster pick to me.

The 4th round is where you get guys like this - not the 2nd.

Oh well - at least Pioli appears to have learned something in this draft. Baby steps, I guess.

I wonder if McCluster will even make it out of training camp if this guy pans out?

For my money, we can do a lot better at RB3 than McCluster.

McCluster is very small and not that fast.

Could have taken alot better receivers yesterday. I'm not liking our picks on the 2nd and third days.

As a Fresno area guy, I watch all their games and I'm not excited by this pick. Wylie is a little dude who is okay as a College returner, but I don't see him being anywhere as good as McCluster. He has good hands, but not the speed or size to do much in the NFL. If ever stays healthy he'll be an occassional player to use on outlet passes because he can catch and pick up a couple yards with quickness, but doesn't have the elusiveness to take snaps away from McCluster.

That's fast as hell. Does he not carry the EQ well? Some guys who are small and fast simply don't play fast at all.

Since McCluster is out as a WR, they aren't really competing so much with each other for snaps. This guy will be our 4th WR at best.

HOLY crap, he ran 4.39? He looked fast on returns, but not really from LOS. I'll root for the local guy- Fresno State did have the worst coaching in college last year afterall - might be better than we saw if he ever stays healthy.

Exactly right. Still shake my head at where Pioli drafted McCluster. Even worse when one considers the needs of the team at the time.

Pioli still hasnt found a replacement for Lance Long. Perhaps this could be the guy.

What if both Wylie and Gray pan out and look good. Where does that leave McCluster? How will he contribute?

McCluster's problem will be the combination of Wylie and Gray. Gray is fast and big and a 1,000 plus yard RB. Wylie is very fast and a slot receiver and an excellent kick returner. If they both look good, McCluster's value to the team plummets.

McCluster has more spin moves than yards

I like this pick for several reasons. First, excellent slot reciever that can take it to the house at any time. This will open up both the running and outside passing game, and gives a reliable check down for Cassel. He is a really good kick returner, but what really impresses me is he is a great cover guy, fast, samrt and determined, watching his highlights you see some awesome plays he makes as a gunner or on kickoff cover team.

So basically Terrence Copper just lost his job.

I'm guessing he's not the only dead-weight wide receiver that lost his job today.

Show me a player on the Chiefs that has more heart or runs harder that McCluster. Even when Todd had him run straight up the middle, he was a good soldier and pounded it up in there.

None of that matters if he doesn't have talent. This isn't pop warner.
