Chiefs Offer to Manning?
Does anyone know if our initial "offer" to Manning was competitive?
or did he look at it and was like **** this horse shit? |
I don't think it got as far as making an offer. Manning basically said he wasn't interested in playing for a team that had top 10 talent except for QB.

And that is why he went to the donks. |

They never got to the point of making an offer. |
Manhattan is still $7 right???

I think Elway ****ed us over. He told PM's camp that if they wanted to negotiate at all with Denver, KC had to be out of the picture from the jump. He took the ultimatum.
Truthfully I have no idea if that happened or do I really think it did, but if Elway was any kind of businessman he would have dropped the gauntlet like that and let Manning decide who he would walk away from. It's not like he couldn't always come back hat in hand and make a last ditch effort anyway, but it would have made for a great box out move as the process opened. |

Just another thing Pioli screwed up. |
I really like Manning, but the fact that he would go to Denver(who's only offensive skill talent was at QB), shows me that he's officially done. He's clearly been hit one too many times in the head.
|
I can tell you what I heard from sources out of Denver (take it or leave it). I heard that the Chiefs went in talking money first (even made the first offer), whereas Peyton wanted to talk money last, and talk programs and ideas first. What I heard was that while money was obviously important, he didn't want to lead off talking about money and turn it into a bidding war. Instead, he wanted to get to know the people and organizations involved, and then once he found the right one (or two), THEN talk about the money.

I heard Denver had the best hospitals.

I remember reading in the Manning thread (or somewhere else on here), that Manning's agent told the interested teams that they would only negotiate with teams offering, at minimum, $16m or so per year. Could be wrong, but I distinctly recall reading an interview with Pioli or another exec about it.
|
what is most interesting is that the offer the donks ultimately made was enought that he'd make more than he would have in Indy, and 1 million more than the entire Indy deal. Interesting. That alone tells me it was mostly about the money. The guy is an ego maniac. It will NOT end well for denver. Manning is a decent blindside hit away from eating his filet mignon and lobster through a straw while wearing diapers. He wanted as much money as he could get his hands on. If it really was about systems and winning, he would have chosen SF, Tenn, KC, or ARI in that order. All have better systems up and running and more offensive talent around him. Its pretty clear why he went to denver.

By signing with denver, it shows it was all about the money. Winning was not a priority.
Hopefully his career is done, donkey shit never washes off. |

I hope Denver has a top notch taxidermist, so the team can get some value out of Manning, after his first big shot to the head. Perhaps they can mount him next to the horse?

Reading the article today about Manning at the Rockies game, it seemed obvious to me that Manning wanted to go somewhere that he was familiar with and where he would be surrounded by friends. He mentioned Helton, Stokley, and John Lynch prominently as influences.
I guess if the Chiefs wanted to sign the guy, they should have gone back in time and signed Stokley and Lynch, and had the Royals draft Helton back in 1995, then changed baseball's financial structure so that they could have kept Helton when he was up for free agency. The Chiefs should have also played Gannon instead of Grbac in 1997 so that John Elway would never have won back to back championships at his age and be able to use that as a selling point to Manning... |

I really don't care anymore. Playing brokebackbronco with Elway and gobs of cash was obviously more important than winning.

Manning going to Denver proves only that Denver satisfied the largest percentage of his need factors. No more, no less. No insult to any other team or city. Potential to win, front office/coaching staff, facilities, salary, environment conducive to his wife and kids, comfort level, friends in town, and whatever else he factored in. |

I don't usually listen to Keitzman, but I caught the very first of his rant today. He was saying that Manning basically did his entire rehab in Colorado, so he was very comfortable out there. And that he and Todd Helton are good friends, so that made him even more comfortable.
I turned it off then. Take that for what it's worth. |

One of the points that Keitzman was trying to make, it seemeed to be an important story that was missed when people were trying to figure out where Manning might go when he was a free agent. |
He did a lot of his rehab in Colorado. He was at the Rockies facility a lot last summer, hell he even had his own locker at the Rockies facility and had access to the Rockies training staff. Todd Helton was a huge selling point for Manning.

Broncos QB Manning thanks Helton, Rockies for opening Coors Field during rehabilitation
By Associated Press, Published: April 29AP DENVER — Peyton Manning felt right at home with Todd Helton and the Colorado Rockies. Manning dropped by Coors Field on Sunday morning to visit his pal before the Rockies played the New York Mets. Manning and Helton were quarterbacks at the University of Tennessee in the mid-1990s. Manning recently signed with the Denver Broncos to become their new QB. When Manning was going through his rehabilitation from neck surgery during the NFL lockout, Helton helped arrange for him to use the Rockies’ facilities to work out. Manning thanked Helton and the Rockies for their hospitality and generosity. Manning said that when he left the Indianapolis Colts, became a free agent and was deciding on a new team, he already knew Denver was a great sports town. “He’s a great friend. What he did for me last year, allowing me to use this facility, use the trainers to work out as part of my rehab process,” Manning said. “I’ve come a long way in a year. They were a big part of it. The whole Rockies organization, I can’t thank them enough for opening their doors to me last year when I certainly was an outsider. I’ll always be indebted to them.” Manning said he even had a locker now occupied by Rockies right fielder Michael Cuddyer. “I needed a place to work out during the lockout. I was here a couple of different times, and I was here continuously. I didn’t travel with them,” he joked. “Cuddyer’s using my locker. He didn’t ask my permission.” Manning and Helton became friends at Tennessee. Manning overtook Helton as the Volunteers’ No. 1 quarterback and eventually was the overall top draft pick by the Colts. He took the Colts to the Super Bowl twice, winning once. The four-time NFL MVP missed the entire 2011 season after his fourth neck surgery and was released by the team in early March. After a short courtship with several NFL teams, he signed a five-year deal with Denver last month. Manning has been a frequent visitor to Coors Field over the years. He has hit a couple of home runs in batting practice and has fielded grounders at his old position of shortstop. “Actually, every time I’ve been here with Todd, as much as I like taking BP, I actually enjoy taking groundballs,” he said. “I miss that about baseball more than anything. “Eight, nine years ago the third base coach was hitting ground balls to me, by myself, and he was like, ‘Why am I hitting ground balls to Manning?’ I love everything about baseball. It’s such a different mentality than football, so many more games, a different atmosphere, I’ve always been a fan of it. Having a connection through Todd has made it very special for me,” he said. Over the years, Manning also felt at ease in Denver. “I’ve spent a lot of time here so I knew how great of a city it was and what a great sports town it was. Todd didn’t have to make a hard, hard sell, but it’s nice to have friends here like Todd, John Lynch and (Brandon) Stokely.” Along with seeing Helton on Sunday, Manning also watched and filmed new Broncos teammate Eric Decker take some batting practice. Manning also is friends with Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey, who took him into the New York clubhouse before the game. Third baseman David Wright greeted him wearing a sombrero and a fake mustache, and 6-foot-11 reliever Jon Rauch nearly put the quarterback on the shelf with his grip. “It caught me off-guard,” Manning said. “Rauch almost broke my hand shaking hands with him.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports...zpT_story.html |
Older, more vulnerable Manning... is JUST the kind of threat & challenge these young Chiefs need imo.
I know its hard to put a number on, to translate with fact in numbers & there is plenty of hope to mixed into my feeling, but there are now not 1 but 2 legit NT candidates ... you know it, i know it, the American people know it... i cant shake the Gut... that SAYS this defense will get scarier & scarier for teams as the season goes on. Teams need feel scuuurred of the Poe-Powe. |
I think both Helton and Stokely (who lives in Castle Rock, CO just south of Denver) both had an enfluence on Manning coming to Denver. That being said, Manning was also considering the Titans and AZ. It's not like he wasn't considering other teams.
|
It's Karma. Now the Chiefs get to Knock him out of football for good and we will get to see Osweiler play sooner.

I love the idea of Manning in Denver.
The AFC West needed a return to the era of quality high stakes football. And just having the name Peyton Manning does that to our division. The move by Denver will ultimatley make us more competitive. I hope we **** them up good. |

are people really butt hurt over Manning not signing with KC?

So one would have to ask, if having a 70% Manning better than a 100% Cassel ? Look at the $$$ Denver paid for a questionable Manning? |

Would a 70% Manning be very lethal with our team, Yes! It didn't work out and IMHO, I think it has more to do with Scott Pioli & Tom Condon than it did Manning. Oh well, it's on now, the rivalry just got nastier now for some Chiefs fans. |
