Help with rusted grill grates

So, my dad gave me his grill because he never uses it, and it was an upgrade over what I had. Problem is, he never cleaned it or took care of it, so the grates are all rusty. I used a wire brush and some sandpaper and got off all the flakes that I could, but it still has that rusty coloration. What do I do now? Just buy new grates? Season over the rust?

Saulbadguy 05-26-2012 03:00 PM

I would just buy new ones.

pr_capone 05-26-2012 03:04 PM

leave it be... extra flavor

rad 05-26-2012 03:17 PM

Reerun_KC 05-26-2012 03:19 PM

Just buy a new one, Mr. Cheapskate. The grill was free.

ArrowheadHawk 05-26-2012 03:43 PM

Cook on it. If it doesn't come off with sandpaper, a steak isn't gonna take it off.

bevischief 05-26-2012 03:49 PM

Fire it up.

In58men 05-26-2012 04:01 PM

Fire it up and spray lemon juice all over it.

I don't know. I was talking out of my ass.

tmax63 05-26-2012 07:31 PM

Build a fire in it, get it as hot as possible for a few minutes and then give it a good brushing. Then cook on the damn thing. If you're afraid of a little charcoal or dirt or rust you shouldn't be grilling. Get back in the house and turn in your man card.

Bugeater 05-26-2012 07:35 PM

One of my friends gave me some cast iron for my grill a while back that was somewhat rusty. I just smeared it with bacon grease, cranked up the fire for a while and went over it with this steel wool-like grill cleaning thing, and then wiped it off with a rag. Been using it for close to a year and I haven't died yet.

lewdog 05-26-2012 07:39 PM

I would just clean it the best you can, then coat it in oil, fire up the grill hot and let that oil seal into those grates.

RJ 05-26-2012 09:27 PM

You can buy a new grate for about $20. You'll appreciate the results.

Option 2 is spray it with oven cleaner, let it sit for a few hours, scrub it with a SOS pad and rinse.

Personally, I'd spring the $20 for the new one.

You can't buy cast iron for $20. Although, if it's not cast iron, then yes, it's not worth trying to save.

replace them with enameled cast iron. Don't go stainless, they don't hold the heat as well.

REDHOTGTO 05-28-2012 08:15 AM

if you're still worried about the rusty after cleaning , stick it in a sandblaster cleans it up perfectly, i do mine every year before the season starts for grilling.

That's the plan now. Just have to buy a sandblasting cabinet.

I know, I :spock:'d at that one too. He said it as if we all just happen to have sandblasters laying around in our garages.

Well, to be fair, I've always wanted one. And I could use it for other things. This could be an excuse to get one.

Is that true about SS grates? My 10 year old cast iron grates need to be replaced and I was considering stainless steel.

Fire Me Boy! will be along shortly to deliver a roundhouse kick to your head for even considering stainless steel.

LiveSteam 05-28-2012 11:59 AM

JFC its cast iron! Put some heat to them & ****ing be done with it!

bevischief 05-28-2012 12:00 PM

LOL

I've tried way more hardcore methods than that to get this rust off and none of them worked.

SAUTO 05-28-2012 03:48 PM

Someone has said it already but just oil the shit out of em and heat it up.

Stay with cast iron, they retain more heat for 'searing'.

Chiefshrink 05-28-2012 04:14 PM

Soak them either in CLR or Simple Green overnight:thumb:

Yup. If the removable rust is off and they're physically in good shape, put a shit ton of oil on them and cook them at medium heat in the grill for an hour or two. Done.
