carburetor question
 

Ok, so I've got a four cylinder F head engine on my old jeep. I'm replacing the carb with a Holley 1908 carb since it is a direct bolt on and has a lower profile. Anyhow, does anyone know what that line is that goes into the carb base? It's basically coming up from the bottom of the pic and going into the top of the intake/bottom of carb. It isn't the fuel line. Help? thx.

no, the vac line is coming out above it and is currently taped off. I've got to reroute that. I just know that i've read all over that this is a direct bolt on app, and the new one doesn't have the port for the whatever the hell it is.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's your main vacuum supply line.

Oh. You're talking about the line running from the carb down to somewhere.

well shit, that is what I originally was thinking. So, then if that is the case, then it is the main, and the one coming out goes somewhere like the crank case?

Where is it going to?

IF we knew that, it might be easier to figure out?

Its it running to a power brake booster somewhere?

Could be an oil breather or pressure relief line of some sort. Is it going down to the crank case or anywhere else on the block?

I'm taking the carb off tonight, so I'll get better pics.

Hope to hell the thing doesnt come apart in mid air. If it does then we know its the "anti come apart in midair hose"

if you are talking about that 3/8" line on the left side of the pic it's just a bowl vent hose IIRC.

Ok, so I've got a couple of other pics. Jasonsauto, it's not the 3/8 one you mentioned, but the one just to the right of it. It looks like it comes out of the vacuum advance of the distributor. Next question is, as you see in the second pic, the new carb doesn't have that port, but rather some sort of vacuum device (the round siver piece) that doesn't have a port. Do I need another distributor now?

I’d be highly surprised if your new Holley doesn’t have a vacuum advance port. Might be in a different location but it should still have one.
If it doesn't it’s not that difficult to modify a distributor for mechanical only advance. It’s just basically a change of springs so the advance weights swing out faster.
