My mom is in the ICU...
 

Some of you may remember back in January I posted that my mom had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Over the past 6+ months, life has been a series of trips to he hospital for chemo, cat scans, and blood transfusions. Due to her declining health and dwindling white blood cell count she and her oncologist agreed to stop doing chemo this past week. I hate admitting defeat but chemo was probably doing more harm than help. After a two day blood transfusion session yesterday and this morning, she came home this afternoon and was in pretty decent spirits. I called home and talked to her and my dad a little bit. About 20 minutes ago, I got a call from my dad saying that my mom was throwing up blood and was in the ICU. I immediately feared the worst but they seem to believe its an ulcer causing the bleeding so I'm going to head home tomorrow after work. Sorry for rambling but sleep is not coming easy so I figured I'd give you all an update and maybe ask for a few more prayers. Growing up I'd often wonder in my mind what it would be like if/when one of my parents were dying...now I'm living it and it's a nightmare.

**Update 8/17 1:25pm**We got pretty awful news this morning. It was not an ulcer. It turns out that her tumor has invaded her stomach. Doctors have basically told us to start preparing for the end. I'm just numb right now. I know I don't really know any of you, but the kind words are very comforting. I'd like to thank each and every one of you.

I can't imagine what you are going through right now. I have often wondered about those same things and dread the day that it presumably becomes a reality. I wish you and your family the best.

I'm not going to pretend she will be well, because I know Pancreatic Cancer is one of those 6 month deals. I wish her a lot of comfort and you and your family great strength in these trying times. God bless all of you.

I am very fortunate to have two healthy, elderly parents. So I have no idea what you are going through. I can only imagine how difficult it must be. My prayers are with you, your mom and the rest of your family.

Crap. Sorry to hear this, AN. I just lost my Mom about a month ago. My prayers are with you and your Mother. May she find comfort in her final days, and I wish you peace.

Sorry to hear the latest, man. I hope it goes as quickly and painlessly as possible for her. For you, I hope you get what you need out of your remaining time with her, but you'll always have your best memories to keep forever.

Went through this with my dad a few years back. All I can tell you is to cherish every remaining moment you have with her. It will take a while, but the day will come when you can smile at the thought of her. You'll always miss her, but thinking of her will put you in a good place.
