Do you have Powerpoint?

On the computer you use most often for personal stuff, do you have Powerpoint?

(And the computer you use most often for personal stuff could indeed be your work computer. There is no judging here.)

I'm asking because I'm wondering if we can put some Sandbox Football tutorials in Powerpoint or if I need to figure something else out.

Yeah.

It comes with the pirated version of Office 2010 Professional

The Mayor 08-22-2012 10:00 AM

Yep. What do you need to put on the slides? Images and such?

patteeu 08-22-2012 10:22 AM

I voted no because the computer I most often use to surf the internet (Windows 7) doesn't have it. But my macbook sitting right beside that computer has it when I need it.

As I said, there is no judging here.

Yeah. We might have a video on youtube to do some tutorials, but as an initial intro to the game I thought it might be nice to have a presentation. But that only works if people have powerpoint, and I wasn't sure if it was as ubiquitous as Word and Excel.

I'm glad that we live in a world where a windows and mac can live side by side in peace.

You could also take advantage of websites such as Zoho, which will allow you to view Powerpoint files online without needing Office installed.

phisherman 08-22-2012 11:00 AM

Microsoft provides a free PowerPoint viewer utility as well.

lcarus 08-22-2012 11:02 AM

Nope

Rain Man 08-22-2012 11:10 AM

Thanks for the tips, fish and phish.

(What are the odds of that?)

NewChief 08-22-2012 11:12 AM

Just use slideshare after making the powerpoint.

That would have worked better if your name was still NewFin.

I hate Powerpoint. Only because I had to teach it to 150 of "In one ear, out the other" women. NEVER AGAIN!

It's ridiculous having to start my training meeting talking to the staff like a bunch of 10 year olds. "Ok, now does everyone have pen and paper to write this stuff down so I don't have to repeat it 50 times?"

Yeah, I don't work there anymore.

I hate it as well.

The worst in the world are the "presentations" where the presenter just reads their slides to you.

Prezi is pretty sweet to use if someone is looking for something a little cooler than powerpoint.

That demo video looked cool, think I'll check into it. Thanks NC :thumb:

It takes a little to get accustomed to using it, but the "zebra" UI is sexy as hell. Just such a cool design.

Yeah I was going through some of the public ones loaded to the site. Awesome flowing design to it. PP always made me think of those boring memories of sitting through someone else's slideshow projector of their vacation pics. :doh!: "Next slide please"

curious as to why PDFs wouldn't work?

I can animate the powerpoints, which is all sorts of fun.

Thanks for the tips and responses, everyone.

Bump 08-22-2012 09:04 PM

haven;t used powerpoint since college

DaveNull 08-29-2012 10:10 AM

Animations are not fun. They are distracting (certainly for professional presentations) and limit your available audience if you're distributing through the web.

Go with PDF or high quality color tiff images. When I give talks, I always carry both these formats in case I have to use someone else's computer. One or both of those formats will always work.

If your animations are needed (like if you're doing a screen recording) then just distribute the video.

htismaqe 08-29-2012 10:56 AM

Why not just use OpenOffice?

I think this really needs to be qualified. It all depends on the type of the animation(s) used, the purpose of the presentation, and the audience presented to. That said, flying, spinning text or whatnot should never be used.

I stand by my statement. The more time you spend fiddling with crap like that is time away from refining the actual speech. Of course I'm sure that most people who put those types of slide decks together think that it's their script.

Slide decks are meant to enhance only. Not to be a crutch, not to be a replacement for a paper or a real handout.

I work in technical sales and we've always used the 6x6 rule for presentations.

no more than 6 lines of 6 words each

as few pictures as possible

avoid animation, music, or other distractors

Otter 08-29-2012 03:10 PM

I have MS Office on my work computer and LibreOffice on my personal computer. LibreOffice isn't as refined as MS Office but it handles all the same documents and can be saved in MS Office format. I also just like learning something different and you can't beat the price. (FREE)

Check it out if sounds interesting: LibreOffice

It's a start at least. My talks aren't geared towards that kind of message. I spend lots of money on my stock photos that I include and design my own slide templates from scratch.

But...that's only after I've already written a paper on the topic and written out a rough script of what I'll say. I'm always ready to invoke Bill O'Riley and say "**** it, Do it Live!"

If you do enough presentations a year (lets say more than one a quarter) then I think it's almost worth buying a Mac just for Keynote. It's that much better, even if you do build from scratch like I do.

nah. never saw the point.
