When do you give up as a fan?
This is not a thread about not being a Chiefs fan, just a thread wondering about those who don't spend as much time being a fan.
I know this subject has been covered ad nauseum, but lets take a different look at it. The Chiefs suck, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. The Buckeyes are on a bowl ban, they are way overrated at #12, and watching them on Saturday made me sad. I realized that this team has a long way to go before I consider them good. I have become some apathetic towards the Chiefs and the Buckeyes that a lot of times I just don't care. I only watched 2Chiefs games last year. The Buckeyes I watched all their games, but never with great expecations. When do you reach a point where you realize that your time is better off doing something productive? Have you as a fan reached that point? Are you a fan who will never do that? I admit that I will not go out of my way to go to Damon's and pay for lunch so I can watch the Chiefs this year. I remember the days of Trent Green and Priest Holmes, I was actually excited to watch the Chiefs, but I digress. I will keep watching the Buckeyes, but man does it suck to have teams you know aren't going to do anything this year. inb4fairweatherfan |
Another thing that cracks me up. Every year you have the kool-aid fans who are always trying to calm everyone down, yet every year we end up sucking as usual. I don't get annoyed with the fans who are optimistic, but in the same sense it's the same freaking song and dance every year. Well it's only the preseason, well its only the first game, well everyone else looked bad. It's just the same old drum being beat. At the end of the day the Chiefs suck and will continue to suck until we have a QB and a competent head coach and GM. Other than that we are right on schedule!!!
|
It was probably the game against the Raiders before the playoffs a few years ago.
For the record, though, I hated the Cassel trade, but I still had a little hope. |

It's sad having no real hope of fielding a great football team. Obviously where I live everyone is either a Browns or Bengals fan. Whenever I talk football they ask me who I like, and I always say "The chiefs" and then they say "ohh so you know how we feel", then I shake my head, because I know that feel bro. |

I am surprised that fans show any pride for our team any more. |
When they don't draft a QB in the first this next year. ;)
Seriously though that might just do it for me. |
I did when I saw the business side of those jokers up close and personal. There's really no emphasis on winning as long as the ledger is in the black. This was 6 years or so ago. There's absolutely no chance I'll throw a remote through my TV at this point but I'll always watch and try to enjoy it.
|
I'll never give up. It's entertainment to me whether we win or lose.

People always say that they would make more if they build a contender, but sometimes I wonder.... |
I think last season was the first time I decided to not get emotionally involved. I took a couple Sundays off and it was really nice...relaxing. I didn't worry about the games. I still DVR'd the games and checked on the scores to see if it might be entertaining to watch, but I didn't make it any kind of priority. I have a feeling I'll end up doing the same thing this season.
|
I have been a Chief fan for 25 years and find myself not caring if I watch the game. For about 10 years, I did not miss a game. However, last year I watched about 5 games. The decisions this team has made in regards to QB and head coaches is down right mind boggling. The fools that run this team have really pulled the reigns on progress and until they make a commitment for a franchise QB, I don't see anything changing anytime soon.
|
I've given up expecting anything. If I was a Chiefs / MU / Royals fan I might give up sports altogether.
|
When you don't miss it and don't find it necessary to schedule around it anymore. Me, I love football not just the Chiefs. But I've decided to work a few Sundays and enjoy the games I will be able to watch but not stress about missing the ones I won't. I'm at the point where I don't feel the need to devote my entire Sunday to the Chiefs. Instead, I will hopefully be able to listen to the game at work and be doing something productive.
I will not miss a Sporting game in KC though. I've scheduled work, vacations, and everything I can around those games. I dvr the road games I must miss due to work. |
I used to break neck speed after Church to get home and watch the game. Not so much anymore.
I would not play golf on Sunday afternoon to watch the Chiefs. Well, I might break neck speed after Church to get home, but it might be to play golf. |
my days are increasingly 'football hectic' on Saturdays anymore. I watch the Chiefs, then basically go on with my day. only reason I watch NFL is because of the Chiefs, so it sucks when they're terrible.
|
As a fan of Royals/Chiefs/Huskers Football and Missouri Football & Basketball.... I've pretty much destroyed my will to get too involved with sports anymore.
Yesterday during the chiefs game instead of yelling at the tv, throwing remotes, and letting it destroy my mood, I just laughed it off and went and did other things. Same with the Nebraska loss to UCLA and the Tigers loss to Georgia. I'm just content now that I have chosen to root for shitty teams. But I will refuse to jump on any bandwagons... these are my teams for life. |
I gave up on the Chiefs when they hired Herman "Milkman" Edwards... Then Haley and now Herm part 2 with Crennel and his 7-11 Defense...
This franchise isnt interested in winning anything, therefore its harder than hell to actually give a shit. They are totally killing my nfl experience... |

Honestly? I stopped being a Chiefs fan 5 years ago. After yet another painful and boneheaded Sunday afternoon loss, I thought to myself "is it worth giving up beautiful fall afternoons spent with my young daughters for this crap?" The answer was a resounding NO, and I've never regretted it for a second. I can't even remember the last time I actually watched a Chiefs game.

For the past few years I still had season tickets, but it got to be more about the tailgate and such than it was about the game (I can't pinpoint exactly when that started). After last year I decided I was done going to games. When they make a commitment to winning, I'll commit my money to going to games again.
It was odd yesterday. I got home from my run and the Mrs was cooking breakfast when I came in. She said, "It felt good to sleep in. In past years we would have already been in the line to get into the stadium for about a half hour". |

You are the best fans in the NFL.
Here, have a jersey. Look! A shiny object....a big ****ing aeroplane for the National Anthem! Matt Cassel used to be a Patriot! Bring beer money. Thanks! Sincerely, The Kansas City Chiefs |

Strange thing, is during the first half when the game was close, I found myself sweeping off the patio during a commercial break and actually forgot to go back in to watch the game.
WTF is happening to me and my fandom? |
I just bumped my thread from 6 years ago.

I don't think I will ever give up, and I will most definitely watch each game. But I have made a decision that this year...win or lose...it won't impact that rest of my Sunday or my week. I know it doesn't have any impact on the players...That's for certain. |
i gave up almost 4 years ago.
|
Well, this is the first year since 1995 that I haven't had Sunday Ticket. I'll just wait for the highlights to be disappointed, and buy my kid a new set of tires for his kart: (unlike the Chiefs he rarely lets me down!)

Started losing my Chiefs passion in the Herm days. Found myself doing work around the house during the games and only checking in on the score. Was a bit re-energized with the Pioli hire, but quickly lost faith with his barrage of stupid moves and arrogant, paranoid demeanor. Now my Chiefs soul is completely dead...and it's kinda sad because Chiefs football used to be a big part of my life.
This offseason, after Manning wouldn't take KC's calls, my give-a-*hit level had eroded to nothing. Didn't even watch the draft for the first time in decades. Watched yesterday purely out of habit, but found myself more excited to watch the GB/SF game with my rabid-9ers fan wife. Seriously...30 drafts without a 1st round QB??? The Chiefs organization doesn't deserve the loyalty of its fans. |
Well well well....you bunch of nattering naysayers of negativity. The Chiefs will apply the same tactics used by politicians to MAKE SURE the Arrowhead experience remains positive.

Love the quasi-Secret Service guys behind the bench complete with the suits, discrete earphones and sunglasses. I wonder if they have 10mm automatics under their blazers. Phone tapping? Bugging offices?...nah, this Pioli paranoia myth is a fabrication of those non True Fans. Hunt and Pioli have made this team impossible to like. |
You know.....it's ****ing sad that I converted my brother into a Chiefs fan. Now I have to sit back and watch him get emotional during the games....while I sit back and don't give a **** when they screw up.

I'm absolutely convinced that, with the way revenue sharing is set up, it makes no business sense at all for a team to spend the money necessary to accumulate the depth to win a championship. As to when to give up - when the losses don't hurt anymore, you have given up. There isn't a time that you actively quit, you just realize that the losses don't bother you. I had a great time on Sunday because I got 2 quarters of decent football, good weather and a hell of a tailgate. I left with 10 minutes left in the 4th not giving a !@#$ that the Chiefs lost because frankly, that's what the Chiefs do. I didn't actively choose to give up - it just happened. I get more angry about Cardinals losses in July than I do at Chiefs losses. A meaningless July loss in a season with 162 games bothers me a hell of a lot more than the Chiefs just losing 6% of their season. I don't blame myself for it - I used to get so angry at these losses that I'd sit in total silence for hours. I didn't quit on the Chiefs - they just ceased to be worth caring about. |

When I was a kid I would actually lose sleep over my favorite teams losing, be depressed etc. Never again... I changed a long time ago and I refuse to let something that I can't control get me down....
|
On top of the Chiefs shittiness and frustration with the organization I don't feel like the product the NFL provides as a whole league wide has been that great for a long time.
|
Since the creation of fantasy football, I find myself enjoying football in general than being fixated on this team winning each week. If they win I'm surprised, if they lose I'm not surprised. I guess my expectations are very low.
The good news is they make each team they play look like a team heading for the Super Bowl. :banghead: |

And I don't care if it makes me a shitty fan but I started Ryan and Jones yesterday. |
I understand how valuable FF is to the league but I think it is the absolute worst thing.
It really plays in the teams losing their identities with players being mercenaries instead of part of organizations. The differences between the teams are completely diluted. |

I have gone from living and dying each chiefs game to just watching with interest...if we win great and if we lose I just get a chuckle out of how much the ownership, management and QB suck.

I give up at the point when the team is realistically eliminated from playoff contention.
So possibly next Sunday, probably after the San Diego game. |
I'm there now. Just glad the TEXANS and COWBOYS appear to be headed for good seasons. Ill have something to watch on Sundays cuz it damn well wont be the Chiefs. I've put way too much into the Chiefs with little return. I'm fed up with being taken for granted. We all deserve more. The Chiefs need to earn my /our support. What a concept...

I gave up expecting the Chiefs and Royals to win years ago. I just watch for enjoyment and if my team wins woohoo. I'm glad I have KU hoops.

Its not in me to give up on the Chiefs. I admit to giving up on the Royals mostly when Brett stopped playing. Like most folks I've seen things in players that others didn't, some right and some wrong. I knew we were in trouble with Cassel based on his footwork from the beginning, takes to long to setup and make a dang decision. I saw that when he was in New England, but I thought it was fixable, its not. I also was so impressed with Charles from day one, he is just an awesome, fun to watch back with the best vision I've seen in the entire league since Holmes frankly. I didn't like the Hali pick and predicted failure at linebacker, I was wrong. I hated the Tyson Jackson pick, still do. I did not like the Powe pick, I've read where he is poor on the mental aspect of the game. I was right on Flowers, right on Carr. I cannot make my mind up on Copper. As far as Pioli, I do not think the Patriot way is a good fit here. It is so aggravating getting team feedback.
|
You know what else makes the product so unenjoyable? The time spent watching commercials compared to time spent watching the sport. That whole commercial/kickoff/commercial bit is infuriating.

I didn't have one Redskin playing yesterday in FF and STILL enjoyed the game. |

Not that any of you care if I'm a fan or not, but I just thought I would echo this sentiment. Maybe if enough people voice it, someone at arrowhead will listen. |

A fan is a fan, win or lose. Being a fan isn't about blind optimism or not having realistic expectations. I want my team to do well. Whenever they don't, that doesn't mean I stop wanting them to.

I watch when I can. I don't live in KC so I very rarely get to see the Chiefs play. I stopped buying the Sunday Ticket three seasons ago. It was free this weekend so I was happy to be able to watch. At least for a 1/2. The second 1/2? Ugh.
I don't think I will ever stop being a fan. I have, however, stopped getting wrapped up in it. If there is something better to do on Sunday than watch NFL, I'll do that now. My kids are only little once. |

Now all that would change if I felt the organization was committed to winning, but I'm not seeing that right now. |

Well try change every year like my Raiders have and see how that works out for you.... There are no easy games in the NFL anymore.... You guys were out manned, you were depleted on defense and they took advantage of it.... It wasn't like the Chiefs got destroyed... |
Won't matter anyway if that ****ing robot in Denver plays like that this year...

I quit when the owners quit. It's why I quit on the Royals long ago. I don't think Clark Hunt has quit and I think he's trying.

I also don't believe the Chiefs will be successful on a continuous basis as long as they are owned by outsiders and/or owners who have interests in multiple sports and teams. They are simply one fish in a pond and not THE fish in a pond. |
I'm trying to get my money back on NFL Sunday Ticket right now...But I don't think the excuse of "The CHIEFS SUCK" is going to get it done. I have much better things to do on Sundays than watch that horse $hit team. Much easier for me to remain a fan if I don't watch them. Can't stomach the same BS year after year. :cuss:
