One of my best buddies not only had the two-tone hair, but could play his riffs note for note while swinging it around his neck at critical moments like Yngwie.

If i am lying may God strike me dead.

I'm still here...

Dayze 09-19-2012 08:52 PM

I quit

Gadzooks 09-19-2012 08:54 PM

Whenever I limber up for playing I always include the intro to Mr. Scary

Munson 09-19-2012 08:59 PM

George Lynch ****ing owns.

Dayze 09-19-2012 09:31 PM

I'm a fan. Never understood why he didn't get more run.......but ****ing matchbox 20 did. Jfc
Later in life of course. But still....back then shit bands get run and virtuosos like George didn't. Satch too

Start Croyle 09-19-2012 09:46 PM

I can't say that I find his playing very interesting! I guess it is just the style of the music!

PRIEST 09-19-2012 11:00 PM

great player

TheGuardian 09-19-2012 11:29 PM

Yup. Great player. I used to jam with this guy when I was like 13 or so. He was a huge Lynch fan and we'd play Dokken tunes for hours. He could hit everything lick for lick. Pretty awesome.

Saccopoo 09-19-2012 11:42 PM

He's okay.

Not Thurston Moore, but okay.

Joe Satriani has been one of the most popular selling artists worldwide for the last 25 years.

George, unfortunately, can't avoid the drama. Between Dokken and his own band Lynch Mob, which has seen more personnel changes than the Chiefs this past four years, he can't seem to get out of his own way.

Yeah, I agree. Weak video of meaningingless wanking.

He's usually much better. The new Lynch Mob EP is cool, although Robbie Crane already quit.

LMAO

Braincase 09-20-2012 06:57 AM

I'm a fan of George, and "Mr. Scary" is his signature solo. That said, my top four are Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson and Brian Carroll.

Meaningless wanking? LMAO

His meaningless wanking is better than most people's concerted efforts.

as far as lead guitarist my fav is Michael Schenker.

There was alot of great "Guitar Gods" from the hair metal era, but unfortunately, people laugh off alot of that era now.

Slash
Mick Mars
Vinnie Vincent
Vitto Bratta
nuno bettencourt
Vai
Vivian Campbell
Steve Clark

but my fav is probably Stevie Ray Vaughn who was born of that era, but pretty far removed from it obviously.

That list is sorta funny. Vita Bratta was nothing more than an EVH wanna-be. Mick Mars I think is very underrated. Vinnie Vincent I always thought of as a bit of a joke. Slash has his moments.

Absolutely. Still listen to my "Lynch Mob" and "Wicked Sensation" CD's on a regular basis.

I think the single most-interesting factoid about Lynch is that he once auditioned for Ozzy and in the process, it was discovered he couldn't read or write music. Lynch said he visualizes the fretboard in shapes (I believe Stevie Ray Vaughan once said he did the same thing).

In a decade where Lynch's contemporaries were all into advanced theory and studying at music institutes, he couldn't even read notes on a staff...

Yea, a lot of the lyrics on a lot of bands from that era are pretty juvenile and make me cringe now, but the musicianship was pretty strong. I think it was just the trendy thing to do was to write songs about girls and appealed to girls.

When you speak of "grunge" as being of lesser musicianship and thereby insult great musicians like Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell, Mike McCready, etc., acting like they're inferior to your gods of hairspray, you're not adding anything of substance. You sound like a moron.

I didn't say it was uncommon. It certainly wasn't common amongst Lynch's "guitar hero" contemporaries at the time, though.

And I also never said it was WHY he didn't get the Ozzy gig. Only that it became public knowledge after he auditioned for Ozzy.

I once saw Lynch do a clinic here in Topeka about 10 years ago. The guy could hardly remember any solos from his Dokken days. And you could tell he was just wingin' it a lot. But he is good a noodling.

Lynch was the main reason why I got into Dokken back in the 80s. He was my main guitar idol for a long time. I had all the Dokken records and the first 3 Lynch Mob ones as well (yes, even the one with rap).

Sure it was and still is to this day. Furthermore, Lynch could read, not that it matters, anyway. Ozzy didn't care for style and Lynch didn't want to be in Ozzy for the main reason that Brad Gillis and John Sykes didn't want the gig: Money.

In Ozzy (and this includes everyone from Randy to Gus), you're a paid sideman. That's it. Flat fee, whether it's studio time or touring. Musicians in Ozzy's band don't share in the record royalties. In each and every song, Ozzy is listed as co-writer although he doesn't write lyrics, melodies or music. If you wrote the music, you're not going to receive 50% but 10%.

Lynch and Gillis decided to take their chances with their respective bands (Night Ranger & Dokken) and Sykes went on to write and record the Whitesnake 1987 album, although he was fired before the band toured or shot video.

Rock musicians aren't expected to show up with a guitar and a chart for auditions. Never have, never will.

Public knowledge? More like Urban Myth. Lynch was a guitar teacher and took over Randy Rhoads students after Randy's death. Lynch also studied classical guitar in Arizona in the 80's and IMO, made his playing worse.

And once again, unless you're showing up on a soundstage for a session, it doesn't matter if can sight read or not, especially in rock.

Lynch himself said he thought it made him worse so he agrees with you. :) I also saw him on "That Metal Show" once and he talked about his obsession with body building. He said it affected his guitar playing a lot, in a negative way. And he said he felt like a douche too. :)

I didn't care for the Ozzy tracks. He was too restricted and was told to play a certain way, which really wasn't his style.

It was nice of Sharon Osbourne to send one of her lackies to fire him at the Rainbow one night. Class all the way.

It's too bad that Jake's a complete mess now. For a really brief period, he was a great guitarist and personality.

Let me ask you this. Do you care for Ozzy's solo stuff outside of the stuff with Jake?

Because I'm a HUGE Dio fan and most people think I'm crazy when I say that "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" are my favorite Sabbath albums.

I LIKE Sabbath with Ozzy but I LOVE Sabbath with Dio. And I don't really like much of Ozzy's solo stuff short of a couple of tunes with Randy ("Mr. Crowley").

To be honest, not really. The Rhoads era is essential but I haven't cared much for anything since, except maybe a song here or there.

The problem is that it's too orchestrated. Sharon is the Puppet Master and I still can't believe that raging **** hired Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin to re-cut all of "Diary" and "Blizzard" so that she wouldn't have to pay Daisley and Kerslake any further album royalties (The royalty thing I described before only applied after Ozzy & Sharon hooked up and Randy died).

I prefer the aggression of Dio's voice to Ozzy's and loved both of those albums (and even the few tracks since under "Heaven & Hell") more than Sabbath. Although Paranoid is a classic album.

My favorite Dio solo record, by a long shot, is "Killing The Dragon". Dio's voice sounds amazing and Doug Aldrich is the best guitarist and songwriting partner Dio had worked with. His playing and tone are phenomenal.

I LIKE Sabbath with Ozzy but I LOVE Sabbath with Dio. And I don't really like much of Ozzy's solo stuff short of a couple of tunes with Randy ("Mr. Crowley").

Blizzard isn't as important to me as Diary but it's a good record (although IMO, Randy Rhoads has one of the worst guitar tones ever recorded on Blizzard). Diary to me a is classic.

The thing about Dio, to me, isn't just the aggression. It's that his voice is SO dynamic. Thinking specifically about the intro to "Sign of the Southern Cross", the transition from melodic, almost sweet, to just pure rage. And the fact that he could bring forth that rage while still maintaining a melody. Unbelievable voice.

His voice is what sells the lyrics, IMO. The imagery - rainbows, dragons, demons, wizards - it all comes through just that much more vividly because he has the ultimate voice for it.

By the way, I don't know if you saw my post a couple weeks ago in another thread - I just got a vinyl picture disc of "Killing the Dragon" and it's freaking sweet.

No, I didn't see the post - that's awesome!

I'm a HUGE Dio fan and was supposed to go to his public funeral a few years back but my daughter got sick while my wife was out of town, so I missed it.

He was one of a kind and sorely missed.

I don't think you are crazy. H/H has always been my favorite. I like the older stuff too, but there is just something about H/H that i like better than all the others.

I thought this thread was about the former Laker player. Never heard of the guy in the op.

I had one chance to see him live and missed it due to extenuating circumstances. :(

It's my favorite too.

I love "Mob Rules" especially "Voodoo" and "Sign of the Southern Cross" but, front to back, "Heaven and Hell" might be my favorite album period, let alone Black Sabbath album.
