A Belgian man is battling the country’s court system to get his marriage annulled after finding out that his wife of 19 years was born a man.

Jan, identified only by his first name, told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper that he discovered his Indonesian wife Monica underwent a sex change after he and his son heard rumors, according to the Telegraph.

"I brought her to Belgium. That was not easy. The Belgian courts had serious doubts about the authenticity of her birth and her identity papers, but eventually they accepted it anyway,” he said. “I thought she was an attractive woman, all woman. She had no male traits."

Jan, who is now undergoing psychiatric treatment, added that he decided not to have children with his wife because he had two in his previous marriage, and that Monica pretended to menstruate by using sanitary towels, according to the newspaper report cited by the Telegraph.

Belgian courts have so far refused to let the marriage be annulled.

It should be annulled because he's a total asshole. It's obvious that he doesn't love his spouse. I would like to think that a rational, decent person who has been in love with someone for nearly 2 decades would not suddenly fall out of love with that person because of a thing in the past that has had zero bearing on the relationship.

Often, the doctor will ask the parents which sex they wish to raise the child, and then the doctor will work with that choice to basically surgically reconstruct the child. Suppose the child is chosen male anatomy, but has otherwise female traits and dispositions. The sense of frustration and confusion would often be extreme.

Well, in most cases, the child is still genetically a male or female. Genetic testing can be done if the organs aren't defined enough so as to be clear.

I would hardly call that "based on" deception. Fact is, this guy is totally insecure. He's had a long, long relationship, presumably with no complaints. None of the honest, real feelings he had for his spouse should have been made to disappear because his spouse's sex at one point in her life didn't match up with her gender identity and presentation.

If this was in the first year of the relationship? By all means, throw a fit. After 19 years together? I think at that point you can admit that you love this person for who that person is.

Can we say mail order bride? I'm not guessing there was a lot of "love and respect" in the first place. Time to upgrade to a newer model, and the factory warranty appears to be out of date.

One of my good friends has just gone trans this past year. It's been a trip watching him change over, and it's still hard to adjust to seeing sometimes. He's made some very stupid decisions... He lost his wife, his good job, his savings, his assets, and the majority of his friends. After hearing the emotional and physical abuse he has dealt with by his Jehovah Witness parents among other things, I really cannot judge him/her and fully support his decision to become what he has always felt inside. The thing is, just because he feels that he should've always been a female, does not change the way he has always cared for and been there for everyone else in his life. It's been sad watching a person that has been so giving, get rejected by everyone he's given to.
