What's your traditional holiday dinner?
Does your family do a traditional (Christmas, Chanukah, etc.) dinner? Or do you do a dinner based on family history?
We do a Swedish dinner at home for Christmas and I'm heading out tonight for a "Sons of Norway" dinner in Mission Hills. It's Scandinavian food, not solely Norwegian food and sans lutefisk. Just curious if your dinner is turkey/ham with typical sides, or some interesting foods from the homeland. |
Haven't done a traditional holiday meal for years. I made chicken noodle soup on Thanksgiving and will likely make chili on Christmas.
|
Tamales on my Mom's side. I have been making a Gumbo, crab cakes, and shrimp brochettes for the past four or five years on Christmas Eve. Not this year though, back to tamales. Topped off with a ton of booze of course!

Frozen pizza and vodka.

I remember my neighbors making tamales every year, an awesome tradition. We always had turkey and/or ham. My Mom always gave everyone a choice before the big day, we got to choose a side dish or dessert, whatever. I knew there'd be good desserts and so on anyway so I usually asked for dilly bread. Now that you've reminded me, I may need to make this one myself from now on.
http://www.squidoo.com/dilly-bread (Note - this calls for you to add dill seed to a stiff dough. That is NOT the same thing as a stiff dildo. In case there was any confusion) |
Turkey sandwiches.

We have steak and shrimp on Christmas Eve

We have the usual... turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. for dinner on Christmas Day. Then for New Years, we have ham and blackeyed peas.

The second is a huge prime rib a couple days later |
We traditionally make Hot Toddy's and Ben and Jerry's for our alcoholic beverages.
Otherwise the food is typical Mashed potatoes, green beans, potato salad, ham, turkey. |
Steak and a glass of wine.

:spock: Anything like Tom and Jerry? Or is there a new ice cream drink I am unaware of? |
I need an invite to a Christmas dinner.
|
Usually appetizers and drinks at night on Christmas Eve and everyone opens presents. Then Christmas night is steak and shrimp.

I change up the Christmas meal every year. Its actually the gift I give my parents so we head home and I bring all the grub and we feast on Christmas eve.
This year the menu is as follows. Parmesan and Walnut stuffed dates Blue Cheese and Walnut spread served with apples Beef Tenderloin with garlic herb butter Caramelized carrots, potatoes, and brussel Sprouts Bread and butter Apple Crisp I was in Napa last week and bought some outstanding red wine from two different small producers. We will be drinking "F" in Red from the Fleury Estate Winery and Cutt from Hunnicutt Wines. Can't wait to drink the wine! Sunday night we will have spaghetti and meatballs. |
