And yes, this has happened before, during a 2004 game between Texas and Texas A&M. After returning a blocked punt for a touchdown, Texas had its point-after try blocked by the Aggies. A&M then went through the same rigmarole as Kansas State, giving the Longhorns the one-point safety.

What's really amazing: ESPN's Brad Nessler called that game in 2004 and Thursday's Fiesta Bowl. What are the odds?

I knew the rule because of the Texas-Aggie game a few years back.

Trivia: That was Derrick Johnson's last regular season game as a Longhorn. (Then they played in the Rose Bowl and beat my Wolverines by 1 point)

It is a very odd rule. How does a safety equal 1 point? How does K-State not have to free kick after said safety? I think it should be called something other than a safety.

Because it came on a one point play after a touchdown had been scored earlier? In college they would also get 2 pts if the defense returned a 2point try.

Which is why the safety happened in the first place.

i assume this is an NCAA only rule? I've been watching NFL games for 35 years now and can't ever recall a 1pt safety. Seems like kind of a stupid rule...

As far as I know the ball is dead because I've seen players try to return a blocked FG but all it is is a waste of energy.

I thought it was relevant that after the ball was blocked, it was recovered in the field of play by Kansas State who then ran the ball into the end zoner his own power and tossed the ball to a teammate, who was tackled in the end zone.

Its not clear, but I assume the "safety" part only came into effect because the recovering team took the ball into EZ and was then tackled. If the recovery and tackle were both in the EZ, I don't think its a safety.

Saw this live. Even after watching it, and listening to the explanation that followed, and pacing the floor all night with sweats and tremors, the one- point safety is still very frightening and incomprehensible. Someone post a clip of some Chiefs incompetence to shock me back into reality, please.

This is true. The orginal post with the rule is only a partial rule. The deciding factor in a safety/touchback situation is the "force" which put the ball in to the endzone. If the "force" is the kick it is a touchback as is most common. ( Blocked kick rolls in to the endzone and is recovered or goes out of bounds.) In the K-state game, K-state gained possesion in the field of play and then took the ball into the endzone. They were the force that put the ball into the endzone therefore it is a safety. If you are the force that puts the ball into your own endzone you must either advance it out or it is a safety. This is the same parameters that are used throughout the game to determine a safety/touchback. "What is the force that put the ball in to the endzone?"

Somewhere around 100 to 1, probably more.

Can the kicking team recover a blocked kick and run it in for 2 pts?

That was the craziest thing I've seen in football. I never knew that one.

So if Oregon would of recovered it, would it of been a two pts or a touchdown?

It would have been a blocked FG.

You can't advance a blocked kick. The defense would need to gain possession and then fumble.z

Yes, in the NFL, as soon as the kick is blocked or the defense gains possession of the ball on an extra point attempt, the play is dead.

I've actually seen that happen, KSU vs Texas in 2010.

After the 1 point safety happened I told my wife I've had to have seen everything by now.

He did gain possession and lateraled backwards...

It's a rule in the NFL as well, though it has never happened. It's a little weirder because the defense can't ever have possession of the ball, so it has to be blocked, then knocked into the EZ by a defensive player, then recovered by a defensive player in the EZ.

Leon Lett on Thanksgiving against the Dolphins is the closest NFL comparison I can think of.
