MLB Will start testing for HGH

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS

MLB will announce agreement for random, unannounced in-season hgh blood testing. first major US sport to test for hgh.

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS

MLBPA chief Mike Weiner has proved very reasonable on the important drug issue. MLBPA deserves much credit for hgh deal.

Chiefnj2 01-10-2013 11:55 AM

I guess Cooperstown won't be getting any inductees for the next 20 years.

JFC!!!!!!

This is so idiotic.

GH in no way, shape, or form gives you a competitive advantage other than healing faster. It doesn't make you stronger, or faster. It just allows you to recover quicker from an injury.

Our sports governing bodies are completely ****ing stupid.

Uh...
There are three major effects of HGH that are desirable for bodybuilders and athletes. First, HGH promotes the development of new muscle cells. A person's number of muscle cells is determined by genetics. After puberty, the level of GH a person's body secretes declines, and muscle cell development ceases. A person can then only work to increase the size of these cells through weight training.

Steroids are different from HGH in that steroids increase the size of muscle cells, mostly through water weight. When a person uses HGH as a performance enhancement drug, they gain only lean muscle mass. The weight gain is slow, usually between one and two pounds of lean muscle every two to three weeks. However, by taking HGH and developing new muscle cells, a person can alter their genetic capabilities and achieve results that wouldn't be possible without HGH treatment.

The second desired effect of HGH treatment is increased energy and metabolism. GH is produced in the human body naturally at its highest levels during youth and puberty. It is primarily responsible for the heightened levels of energy in children. However, the amount of GH that a body produces and secretes declines as a person ages.

Supplementing HGH can raise your energy levels and metabolism. It can cause you to feel energized and burn fat. In fact, HGH is a precursor to IGF-1; IGF-1 secretion is caused by HGH secretion. IGF-1 forces your body to seek energy from your fat reserves rather than from the food you consume. This results in significant weight loss even in inactive periods.

The third desired effect of HGH treatment is that it shortens the amount of time needed for recovery between workouts. It can strengthen joints and ligaments and heal damaged tissue. Additionally, because it is a natural substance, it is not as easily detected as other performance-enhancing drugs.

...and umm....
As a pharmaceutical drug, HGH is used for many different conditions, including GH deficiency. It is prescribed by endocrinologists most often for children who suffer with growth reerunation or deficiency. For this purpose, HGH treatment is FDA-approved. However, HGH is not FDA-approved as a performance or physical enhancement drug in adults. Therefore, persons seeking to use HGH for these purposes must purchase HGH on the black market.

:spock:

Yeah it is called Human Growth Hormone for a reason. It is a peptide hormone which stimulates growth, cell reproduction.
Bodybuilders use it for a couple of reasons. It helps build muscle mass and it can also help in wieght loss depending on how it is used. It is also being linked to anti-aging.

But according the Mayo Clinic that muscle growth does not translate to strength increases. Why? I have no idea.

Chiefnj2 01-10-2013 12:18 PM

I read an article from someone who had a physician prescribe him various supplements, steroids, HGH, etc. According to him HGH was the best at making you feel younger - more energy, improved eyesight, etc.

DJ's left nut 01-10-2013 12:25 PM

PR Stunt.

By all accounts, there is no reliable method of testing for HGH anyway. The guys that use it are going to be able to mask/cycle around testing as it is.

I'd be shocked if someone ever actually popped positive for it unless it was a minor leaguer that was just grabbing it from a guy selling it off a donkey or something. The chemists that create the stuff are way ahead of the testing protocols for it.

Wrong, as stated several times in this thread.

Depends on what standards you set. If you want balls flying out of the stands and 10 pitching changes every game, you need to start a new arena league. The skill levels of the players will not drop. Barry Bonds was a much better all around player before the steroids.

GH has its advantage. It improves reaction time.

That's a characteristic or quality that's advantageous when it comes to hitting.

Bowser 01-10-2013 02:03 PM

I read this as "Middle Lineback Will....."

My head nearly exploded, as those are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT POSITIONS.

But yeah, this is dumb. We pay to watch athletes perform amazing acts of athleticism. GH and HGH should not be outlawed, imo.

I think the substandard product will be from stars missing more games and being subjected to more guys getting called up from AAA while a guy is on the DL.

Not really. The players always know when they are going to get tested unless they are on the list to be randomed during the season which IIRC requires them to fail a drug test. And then they only have to do that for a year or 2 and then they are back to knowing when they are going to be tested.
For a person to fail a drug test in the NFL, that person has to be stupid or an addict.

BlackHelicopters 01-10-2013 04:43 PM

Good for MLB, I think........

Pasta Little Brioni 01-10-2013 04:52 PM

But, but, but the game must be PURE :whackit:
