Went out to eat with an old friend last night...

So I went out to eat with an old friend last night and she is talking about stopping at Habitat for Humanity. She was just talking about nothing in particular and she mentions that they just got a huge truck load of supplies in and they had two black guys unloading the truck. The weird thing is when she says this she lowers her voice at "black guys". I proceed to ask her why she lowered her voice when she said "black guys"? She tells me she doesn't want to offend anyone.

Huh? Is there any "black guys" out there that get offended by being called black? Does "black guy" have a negative connotation assigned to it? I wouldn't think a "black guy" would mind being called black any more then a "white guy" would mind being called white. Neither is truly white or black.

Just curious to know what everyone else thinks about this.

CoMoChief 01-16-2013 03:03 PM

Oh you'd be surprised

KChiefer 01-16-2013 03:03 PM

Why they gotta be black rather than just you know, two guys?

ptlyon 01-16-2013 03:09 PM

If they were chinese guys I'd understand...

Hmmm...normally not. I think the question is, would she have said "two white guys" had they been white? It's not offensive (although I'm brown...not black), but the way she said it sounds kind of weird.

Yeah, I kinda thought that too but I also believe there was a little more to the conversation I just don't recall what it was exactly. Just found the hushed "black guys" was weird.

Yea...if she was trying to describe the men, it would probably be ok to say black guys. But it sounds like there was no need to be descriptive there.

She could have just said a couple of guys unloaded the truck.

Hammock Parties 01-16-2013 03:25 PM

Did you sex her up?

saphojunkie 01-16-2013 03:26 PM

It's not racist, it's just stupid. It's not like she categorically identified them as having specific traits simply because they were, or insinuated that they were somehow inferior or less because of their skin color. But there was no need to point it out. If it had been two white guys, would she have specified that?

Again, not racist...just stupid.

Phobia 01-16-2013 03:26 PM

What kind of supplies?

Were the guys anywhere around at the time? I could see it if they were, wanting to describe them without them overhearing and thinking your talkin smack. Same way you point out to a buddy the girl with the "big boobs" or "ass" in whisper voice.

Phobia 01-16-2013 03:33 PM

Which Habitat?

Yeah, at least she just used the term "black guys."

Recently, I gave these guys I didn't know a ride across town from the bar. One says, "We're headed through nigs-ville." Lucky for him his buddy told him to knock that shit off, or he was about to be standing on the corner of said "-ville."

I always lower my voice when I say black guys because I am afraid they will appear like candyman if I say it too loud.

Oh, right. My apologies! It's only proper taste to ask for pics first.

Mr. Flopnuts 01-16-2013 04:11 PM

When you sexed her up you should've said you were black (in hushed tones) beneath the waist.

They were unloading a truck. If she hadn't identified them as black, people would have assumed they were hispanic.

patteeu 01-16-2013 04:26 PM

I'm sure there are people who get offended by being described as black. There are people willing to be offended by almost anything when it comes to race.

Chief_For_Life58 01-16-2013 04:32 PM

were they stealing the supplies?

She wasn't being racist as far as I can tell given the limited information.

this is a sore subject , some "black guys" can get upset about anything you say around them ! i however play golf with a "black guy" i've known and respected for 35 yrs, real nice "guy" . sometimes i use the "n" word too much and always try to watch it around him, (hes the whitest "black guy" ) you've ever met, even presses his socks ! anyways we're on the course one day and i slipped up and said the "n" word where he could hear it real good. i apoligized and his exact response was " it would bother me if i was one" !
i wish that all felt that way, don't let any cracker say it but they sure can !

Wouldn't offend me. I do find it curious when ever someone mentions a person race when it has nothing to do with the story-Not at all offended by either one, just find it curious

My friends that are black hate being called African-American.

They said they'd never been to Africa nor do they want to.

So if a white guy moves to the USA from Capetown does he have to list African-American on his Visa?

hometeam 01-16-2013 06:23 PM

Ah. Now I see.

I believe the term would be "African-European-American." I don't really care one way or the other "black" "African-American" just don't call me P-I-O-L-I. I will kill you if you call me *****.
