Question: Why can't we back out of the Alex Smith trade now? (or can we?)
Just out of total curiosity, what would happen if the front office didn't sign the trade deal on the 12th?
Would this be a violation of any rule, written or unwritten? Would other teams not trust the FO? (They didn't sign anything yet, so I can't see this....) All is fair in Love & War? |
That's evil ****ing genious!
Make it happen Clarks. |
Why not? Nothing official from us about the trade.
|
To clarify it would be a pretty scumbag move though.
|
You're really asking if it would be breaking an unwritten rule? Really?
|
Highly doubt KC will back out of the trade.

would it be viewed as such by the other organizations or is it not a deal till the ink is dry? |
There would be no penalty from the NFL. Pretty sure teams would become leery of making phone calls with us before trade seasons open again, though.
I don't know enough about the inner workings of NFL front offices to say if that's a big deal or not |
Keep him, pay off his 2-year contract. Then trade him for Foles and some picks.
|
It would be a dick move....but it would be a ****ing hilarious dick move.
|
Who leaked the trade story anyways? Us, or them?
If we didnt go around confirming it, I dont see why it would be an issue if we were to back out. Both parties knew it was unofficial until the 12th. |
Im sure they could.....but i highly doubt they would. Signing bowe and tagging Albert are all part of their secret master plan.....and that plan includes Alex Smith.

But since it is clear you have no input,& can't read just feel free to keep spouting stupid shit.... |
I would back out
|
I think we should come back to the table and offer less.

As long as there's no talk of an extension with A. Smith, I'm ok with the trade. Make him earn that extension.
OH yeah, and draft Geno #1 to light a fire under him. |
I don't think its a coincidence that Bowe wouldn't sign until we had a new QB. That was probably the only stipulation he made when the new regime came in. Take care of that position first, and I'm good to go...
Alex Smith was the first domino... Two big signings and a franchise tag left tackle (who should be pretty damned happy he's getting top 5 money at that position, even for just a year), and we are well on our way. |
Yeah. Take 34 off the table and make it their move.
|
The deal is not official. So yes, the Chiefs can back out right now if they wish
|
Missouri does have a Lemon Law.

Then pick him up as a free agent for half price. |
Some team needs to come in with an even stupider offer and save us from our own genious.
|
Reid and Dorsey wouldn't want their name damaged in Frisco. Backing out would put a bitter taste in the mouths of the 49ers. I would think they would turn the cheek if Chiefs were wanting to negotiate a future unknown deal
|
If we were to back out now, good luck with any teams ever proposing "in principle" trades with us.
We are stuck with Alex as a 2 year stopgap. |
What makes today any different than yesterday in terms of this trade?
:hmmm: |

take 34 off the table and offer up Cassel instead lol
since everyone nationally thinks Cassel isn't that bad and just needed more weapons. |

It wouldn't be a dick move... the 49ers are blatantly ripping the chiefs off.
Right now the 49ers are making the dick move. |

Coaches have burned bridges with other teams in the past though. |

Since we don't really know the details yet, I don't know that we can even really evaluate what the conditions are that we would be backing out of.
I think it's safe to assume that a verbal agreement is in place, though, which would be a major dick move to back out of. |
I'm hoping whatever the deal is that we didnt offer him an extension.
Doesn't he have 2 yrs left of his contract? |
I wish, but we deserve aids for making it.

1. No contract has been signed, therefore no deal.
2. No way the NFL can penalize anybody. 3. 49ers leaked the trade so screw them. I hope the Eagles figure out there is no market for Foles at the price they are asking and we trade a 3rd for him. |
 The team doesn't want to back out. Fans, outside of this place, don't even want us to.
|
maybe the deal had a clause that the Cheifs had until 'X' date to void it. or something along the lines of an official shit or get off the pot deal.
I mean, if you're the Niners and along comes the Chiefs who offer up the 34 and a 2nd (reportedly) next year for a guy you're going to cut anywya......and one of their caveats is some sort of expiration date etc, the Niners would be stupid not to take it. worse case, they cut Smith and save $. Best case, the Chiefs can't back out and you get a haul for a POS QB. |
because it won't happen
it was a gentleman's agreement...some people have integrity I hope Reid and Dorsey have integrity...if they agreed to the deal, they agreed to the deal. I didn't like the deal but if they agreed to something, they agreed to something. |

The same sources that reported the Smith trade said that KC had made a major commitment to Smith. That says long-term deal.
|
Wait, let me get this straight:
People actually believe that the Chiefs traded for Alex Smith because they thought they had no opportunity to sign Bowe and Albert, therefore, drafting a QB at #1 overall was off the table because LT was more important? What? |

And obtw- this would stick with the Hunt fam, not just the FO. and one more thing -- Alex Smith was this org's best option. |

We won't violate anything for backing out of the trade, and more importantly, if it turns out San Francisco was the culprit for announcing the trade early (we know the Chiefs don't talk deals until they are done) the evidence is on them releasing the info to drive up Alex Smith's worth to gain a better bargain on him, in which case I'd be inclined to back out if my need wasn't as bad as it is.
|
We needed a vet to show Geno the ropes. We spent our first two picks on the biggest need QB

They have every right to back out or renegotiate the terms. I wish they would, but they won't. Nobody is willing to offer anywhere near what we did for him so it wouldn't be a bad thing to offer less knowing that they have to cut him anyways if noone trades for him.
|
I'm hoping the trade is good, but the compensation was falsely reported. A 4th and a conditional 2nd would be easier to swallow and would keep Geno well in play. I know, I know wishful thinking.
|
Good Lord. If a deal was actually agreed upon we're not backing out.
The only question left is what we do with the first pick. |
"Lol jk, Bowe. You get a rook"

Is there a precedent? Totally hilarity. On second thought.......uh, no.
|
We can, but a front office ****ing another one like that is a pretty big thing in the NFL. Its not an option at all.

Unless he fails a physical, there's no way Dorsey sets the precedent his first year as a GM as a guy who will "back out." Terrible business.
|
If anyone in the league deserves to be punked like that, it's Harbaugh.
His insufferable whining would be icing on the I WANT CAKE NOW cryfest. |
Who better to help Geno transition into the league and deal with the pressures of being a number one pick, than a former number one pick?
|
what a stupid thread........not surpising in the least that the OP is a complete and utter tool.....

Question: If the Bills call the 49ers and offer their 1st round pick and a 4th next year, will Alex Smith be a Chief or a Bill on March 15th? Answer: A BUFFALO BILL |

There's no reason to back out of this trade. If the Chiefs draft Geno Smith with the #1 overall pick, they'll be set at quarterback next year AND for the next decade after that. They'll be positioned to win immediately with Alex Smith and later with Geno Smith.
We all thought Reid and Dorsey were idiots. It could well turn out that we'll all be calling them geniuses after the draft. The Redskins gave up two first round picks, a second round pick, and a fourth round pick for RG3 and Kirk Cousins. We could give up a first round pick and two second round picks for Geno Smith and Alex Smith. Sounds like a plan that isn't even far-fetched when you look at it that way. |
