Buck 03-14-2013 08:31 PM

Wait, is he getting $4 Mil to be a backup QB?

jd1020 03-14-2013 08:31 PM

I'm not sure why they would extend him with another 1 year $4mil deal.

I'm told Matt Cassel's contract with #Vikings is indeed a two-year pact. Reports of $4 million a year are at least a little high.

Wouldn't doubt it. Not because he deserves to be the starter, but because Ponder is just that bad and they'll make the move to Cassel. Kinda like the Chiefs did with Quinn. Quinn was far worse than Cassel but because Cassel was playing horrible they just went with it.

Viking fans at the board are not all idiots. There are a few, though:

Matt Cassell also lead the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2010 and took over the Patriots and went 11-5. He does have a track record for success, while Ponder has a track record for frustrating people."

A solid signing, especially considering the alternatives. The best available, imo, aside from if Kolb ended up getting released. Definitely heads and shoulders above all those worthless bums that were listed off as possibilities earlier in the offseason."

The one play from last year that I can't get out of my head was where the Chiefs had the ball 1st and goal on the one yard line and Cassel fumbled the snap and turned the ball over. Yea, great signing. Good luck with that Viking fans.

As long as Matt doesn't fumble the snap, he should be able to do a good job handing it off to Adrian Peterson, taking four sacks, and overthrowing whoever lines up at receiver.

But however you cut it, he's better than Webb...

4m per year isn't a big deal. Aren't we paying Chase Danzi 3m per?

And you know he's gonna see the field. Remember how he plays in camp when there's no actual pressure? Those poor ****ers are actually going to think he can play.

J Diddy 03-15-2013 01:08 AM

You people amaze me. I could see the angst at Cassel when he was a member of the team. He is not. He is a decent dude who took tons and tons of personal shit because he wasn't good at being a quarterback.

Speaking of Cassel. This is the perfect pro comparison for this guy.

QB07 LANDRY JONESQB OKLAHOMA

NFL COMPARISON Matt Cassel

BOTTOM LINE The NFL-sized pocket passer can be decisive and flashes the accuracy to pick apart defenses at the next level. However, his tendency to get rattled under pressure is a major issue. Also, when things start to go downhill, he lacks a short memory; his confidence is shaken. He is also inconsistent in his reads and decision making.

Yep, rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship. Gives the fans new hope for the next season. Tried and true practice in the NFL.

ChiefGator 03-15-2013 06:25 AM

It's funny that noone is like:

"I hope he goes on to win with Minnesota just to show how bad the Pioli-run (or ruin) Chiefs were. I'm going to root for him just to show the Chiefs made a mistake."

You know.. like they do about the Geno.

Really, Cassel isn't a bad backup, if you don't have a developmental QB there. He's not going to win you much, but he can (somewhat) direct a pro-style offense and make a few passes when necessary. I don't think he was the ONLY reason our offense sputtered constantly.

I don't remember how good the Viking O-Line is at pass blocking though, which has a LOT do with Cassel's state of mind back there. (i.e., he needs like 10 seconds)

BoneKrusher 03-15-2013 06:50 AM

I know, I don't think they have any illusions about what they are getting. The article is pretty accurate, except the part where they think Cassel is a good backup coming in at the start of a game. He's not a good backup period.

If I remember right--Ponder played EVERY SNAP last year.
It was a sign that Webb was that bad. And he proved it in the playoff game.
