God I hope this is the kind of shit Elway is really about. That he's really a fraud, and Von Miller and Peyton Manning were just instances of being in the right place at the right time.

Smart move.

Why pay Elvis Dumervill $12 million this season?

Why was it a bad move to release a $12 million dollar player that wouldn't renegotiate his contract?

Elway convinced Wes Welker to take $6 million per year. $6 million for a guy that caught more than 100 passes five years in row.

Not really.

Dumervil is absolutely worth $8 mil.

That doesn't negate the fact that $12 million was too much, does it?

ShowtimeSBMVP 03-15-2013 02:18 PM

Broncos could still sign Elvis Dumervil but there are salary cap implications. Not that simple.

No, they reached an agreement. They just didn't have time to file it.

What will likely happen is they will file what amounts to a novation of the previous deal; a contract that mirrors the resuctructured terms. But the Broncos weren't sure if it would get processed in time and had no interest in risking the guaranteed cap hit at $12 million so they cut him.

Now they'll go through the hoops of writing and inking him to a deal that matches the restructured one, I would guess.

According to Jeff Darlington, the agent made a colossal mistake:

Jeff Darlington ‏<s>@</s>JeffDarlington Wild stuff on Dumervil right now: It's clock management. Agent made a "colossal mistake," source says, by not getting signed contract faxed.

mcaj22 03-15-2013 02:19 PM

LOL they could re-sign him for 8 but the release is still at his 12 million because that idiot screwed up, they have to take the cap hit AT 12 million regardless

so it's like paying out 12 million against the cap ANYWAY. LOL

ShowtimeSBMVP 03-15-2013 02:19 PM

Jeff Darlington ‏@JeffDarlington

Team hadn't received signed contract via fax at 1:59 p.m. If Broncos didn't waive Elvis, they had to pay original $12 million, source says.

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-15-2013 02:28 PM

They'll probably just make up for it with a massive signing bonus to skirt the dead money and spread it out over several years.

Still, this is why the "You're not a GM" shit doesn't fly. Intelligent people who pay attention to detail don't make mistakes like this.

RealSNR 03-15-2013 02:28 PM

This is funnier than the time the Raiders accidentally released the wrong player. The pages got stuck together or something, and instead of cutting their training camp scrub, they got rid of their 3rd round pick

I don't think so. He had a really interesting contract with 'rolling guarantees' that didn't kick in until those deadlines. I think the Broncos will take a small hit because it's about to accelerate 3 years worth of signing bonus (about 1.5 million) but his 'guaranteed money' wasn't really guaranteed; he had to be on the roster at that deadeline to lock it in.

It was an easily escapable contract and it appears the Broncos did just that.

I hope the Patriots sign him now.
