COMIC BOOK PEOPLE
talk to me

About . . . ?
And if you say "comic books," I'm going to punch you right in the ****. |
What do you want to discuss? The state of the industry? How to make one? The move from independent comics to web comics? What's the difference between a trade paperback and a graphic novel? How to break in to the biz?
You gotta give us a tad more to go on here. |

Marvel > DC

DC< MARVEL Dc is always a great read and not too serious.

Marvel is better as a whole, but Batman and Superman have some amazing comics that are my faves.

So, who would win in a fight? Wolverine, or Batman?
I say Wolverine. Wolverine is awesome, and has adamantium bones. |

Best miniseries ever!
Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman IMHO |
Also, Wolverine beats everyone. Old Man Logan is a great miniseries as well.

I bought and read through the first six of these TPB. They are pretty good buys, $20 for 500 pages. These are comics from the short stories by REH, Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp. John Buscema is GOAT |
I ****ing hate Wolverine's character.
I know I'm like one of ten people in the world with this opinion. |
How about Wolverine vs Spiderman?
I've had this argument with a friends a million times. They all say Wolverine but Spider-Man is stronger, faster and has the range attack with the webs. I think he'd give Wolvey that work. Spidey couldn't kill Wolverine (who can?) but he could knock him out. |
Where locally (kc area) do you shop?
Do you use mylars for all of your books or just your money books? If so do you use the 2mil or the 1.5s. What size bag/boards do you prefer. What storage methods do you use? Anyone interested in any sale/trades? |

If one were to want to get into collecting what would you recommend to start with? Also what trade rags or web sites do you use to value the comics? I haven't touched a comic book in probably 20 years but would like to get back into collecting.
|
Honestly, I torrent mine and then buy the ones I feel deserve my money.

Unfortunately, since I got caught in the government furlough, I had to cancel my trip to NY Comic Con. I was going to be helping a friend out at his table where he's selling his graphic novels as well as his latest novel that just came out. NYCC and SDCC are two intense shows, but as an exhibitor I don't get to see much of them. Mostly I'm working the booth from 9-7 Thursday through Sunday.
I do most of my shopping at conventions these days. Since I have written some short stories based on comic characters, I tend to pick up key issues about specific characters. It helps me get the characterization down pat and it's also a tax write off (research material). I buy more independent comics these days than I do DC or Marvel, but I have picked up some of the big omnibuses in B&N or B-A-M (they're B&W versions using the original pencils), but they're a lot cheaper since they don't have to pay for color. The new Hawkeye series is outstanding. Same with Fearless Defenders and Superior Foes of Spider-Man. If you want back series, try Captain America: Red, White and Black from a few years ago.
And yes, Marvel is the superior brand. Most of DC's appeal is Batman, and he can only go so far. |

Spiderman can't break a bone on wolverine. Spiderman can't heal. Not really a fair fight... |
Okay, if you really want to do this: Wolverine can't kill Spider-Man either. He's not strong enough, even with the claws. Spider-Man just took an unholy beating from Phoenix-Force powered Colossus - whose weaker 'partner' Emma Frost had just pounded Thor literally into the dirt - and not only lived to talk about it, but arranged the defeat of Colossus and his similarly-overpowered sister Magik to boot. Spider-Man is also much faster, physically stronger, and far more acrobatic than Wolverine, and he has ranged weapons, and is a legitimate scientific genius. He repeatedly surprises other A-list superheroes with the levels of his abilities in combat. In his earlier days, he was a pretty weakling nerd, but over the years they've amped up his power level so he's on par with the strongest there are. Wolverine is strong, but not that strong.

Spiderman could easily knock him out and stuff him in a furnace. According to everything Marvel has published. Spiderman (if willing) could kill Wolverine in a New York minute. |

He beat the crap out of a herald of Galactus for Chrissake. http://www.spiderfan.org/comics/imag...mazing/270.jpg |
They are correct 99 times out of 100 spidey should win against wolverine. But it depends more on the writer.. Wolverine could do it. Technically depending on wolverine lore, his mutant ability is not just a healing factor, it is surviving factor, he can reheal from being burnt to a crisp, dismembered, ages super slow.. Then add weaponry. But a pissed off spidey would be fun also..
You can debate either way from what writers have put into books.. the only battle that pisses me off is the batman vs. superman... Superman would own almost anyone that was not a magic user. Superman could just go orbital against batman and most others and own them them. Kryptonite, magic and humanity right now is his only real weaknesses. |
The Dark Knight Returns is one of my favorite comics ever. They just came out with the TDKR animated deluxe edition bluray today. Check it out.

Spidery is stronger, faster, more acrobatic, more agile, has faster reaction time, the spider sense, and the webs- which according to the movies have tensile strength proportional to the cables that hold up bridges. If Spider-Man were pissed off, it wouldn't even be a close fight, IMO. While we're on the subject though, what I find weird is how Wolverine is always portrayed. If you go by Wolverine Origins (which is one of my fave comics by the way), he was born sometime in the 1800s. He's been a member of Canadian black ops, fought in wars, spent time as a samurai, and survived the Weapon X program. The dudes had, like, 80 years of intense combat training and yet he's never mentioned as one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel Universe. They always rank guys like Captain America and Black Panther and shit ahead of him. On top of it all, he's always written as this mindless, berserker brawler. I mean, I understand they want to highlight his healing factor and show what a tank he is, but I've just always felt like it was doing his character a disservice. |

I just finished up reading the Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest series and they were damn good. The two series serve as a nice backstory for a lot of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters (Starlord, Rocket Raccon, Drax, Gamora, Quasar, Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Groot, Ronan the Accuser, etc). It also has some of the biggest villains in Marvel in them - Annihilus, Galactus, Ultron and Thanos.

How about you Swanman, dipped your toe into the Infinity storyline yet? I keep asking to see if it's worth getting into just on the name comics alone, or if I'm going to have to pick up all the offshoot storylines as well. DC did that with Blackest Night, and I found it annoying. |
Quote:
http://i29.tinypic.com/i6gnef.jpg But yeah, Wolverine is a killer... |

I really didn't like how it ended (kind of a cheat) but it was good. I liked the Inferno and AOA events better... |
Quote:
I'm a sucker for these cosmic encompassing stories. That all started with Secret Wars all those years ago. The comics Swanman was talking about sound good to me, as well. |
Haven't read any of Infinity yet but I'm digging Battle of the Atom. Recently I've been buying up a bunch of the omnibuses for stuff I read as a kid (X-Cutioners Song, Fatal Attractions, AoA, Knightfall, etc.) I still have all the original comics bagged and boarded, just don't want to spill beer on them or something
. |
Also enjoying Superior Spiderman.

http://i.imgur.com/XyOccak.jpg I think all the stuff on this list is necessary, but I'm not sure how it would read if you just did Infinity 1-6. There are several tie-ins not on this list, you can safely skip those. |

Pretty badass how batman is in this...an older and like you said zero ****s given batman. I was surprised it got a pg13 rating. Under the Red Hood is another good one and Year one isn't bad either as for as animated flicks. The comic and this movie were great. |
Bro bro bro.

You can normally talk them down in price if you buying a lot. ign.com has good info on which comics are the best stories for all the big hero(es). It is where I read a lot of my stories. I do not really collect, I just like to read. |

Thor can't beat the Hulk and we've already witnessed Hulk vs Supes.
