What is the most obscure country from which you've met a person?
Don't count people you've met while traveling to obscure countries. What's the most unusual country from which you've met someone, while going about your normal business in the United States?
I was friends with a guy in college who was from The Gambia. Not just a Gambia, but THE Gambia. That's a small country. The husband of a friend of mine is from Yemen, which is pretty unusual, and a client of mine once was from Bulgaria. I met someone once whose girlfriend was from the island of Truk, and I really wanted to meet her, but never got the chance. I'd like to meet a Mongolian person at some point. |

A great friend of mine at KU was from Ghana. His name is Siaw Yaboah. He went by the nick-name of Kojo, which means "Monday born," in Ghana.
They have several dialects in Ghana and English is/was taught to the privileged. When Kojo came to KU he had to relearn English because he couldn't understand a word we said (and vice versa). He caught on really fast and busted all players in chess. He's now a successful engineer in California. Rock on Kojo! |
Laos. But it's not really obscure because there is a large Laos population here in Northern California.

And the guy from Ghana would just sort of smile about it and never got mad. |
Actually quite a bit. I play soccer with quite a diverse and rotating crowd of foreigners.

I have a lot of Laos friends here in DFW (surprisingly there are a lot of them here). Guy that works at the convenience store by my house is Nepalese. I was friends with a bunch of eastern Europeans in college (most were Albanian and Macedonian) and they had an Estonian friend (he was an acquaintance of mine). |

In college, my roommate was from Iran. This was during the height of the Iranian hostage crisis. Boy, did he get shit everywhere he went.
Sad thing was, he was in a Jewish minority over in Iran and recently came to the U.S. to escape persecution over there. Poor guy - he was literally like a man without a country. |

I met a lady at a party 2 weeks ago from Ecuador. Her English was very good and she was very nice. |

When I bartended at a Crowne Plaza hotel, one my best work pals was from Eritrea, truly one of the most kindhearted, sweetest guys you could ever want to meet.
That place specialized in international staff, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Croatia, Bosnia, Italy, several African nations, those and several others i've forgotten were all represented. I tried sooo hard to hook up with this girl from Norway, my Lord she was just incredible, straight from a postcard... tall, platinum blond... mercy. But she was already hooked up with a genuine, all American asshole and couldn't be pried loose. |
