Need some car audio help/advice

For now, let's say I have a budget of $1000. That is fairly flexible.

I'm spending more and more time in my car driving to and from work, so I think I want to invest some money into building myself a nice stereo system. I've had some experience with this type of stuff before, but am looking for help picking out a head unit, as well as an affordable option for subs and amps.

I'd like to have 2 amps. One for the subs, one for my mids and highs. I'm thinking I'd like to go with a pair of 12's or 10's.

When I buildt a system for my Mustang, I used almost all Kicker equiptment. I'm leaning towards using Kicker again, but am open to new brands. Also keep in mind I'll be doing all the installiaton, so no need to factor that into the budget.

Thoughts and advice would be appreciated!

Why such a preference for JBL?

gblowfish 12-05-2013 11:44 AM

Those are the same radio knobs I had in my 1971 Chevy Chevelle.

I've always like Alpine stuff. Very reliable and long lasting. I have Focal front speakers and Polk Audio rears. I don't need a sub, because I think it's rude to make all fifteen cars around me listen to the same thing I'm listening to....

Damn kids, get off my lawn!!!!

Clarity imo. We built a car that had a full kicker system in it, most of it was sponsored by Kicker and it sounded great, got real loud and thumped hard. It was about $3,000 worth or product they gave us.

Then we built another car that featured JBL equipment and the clarity was impeccable no matter how loud you turned it up. It just sounded more crisp. Didn't get as loud though but that's because we didn't use a series of huge subs like the Kicker system had.

IA_Chiefs_fan 12-05-2013 12:15 PM

I've built or helped build some impressive budget systems. I don't know what kind of music you listen to, which is an important factor in the setup you choose. I would like to suggest you check out Eclipse for the amps. Pioneer for the head unit, and CDT for speakers/subs. KnuKonceptz for your wiring. There's obviously tons of options but these brands have never let me down in their respective areas.

According to the guy in my high school science class whose '88 Grand Am rattled like it was in the Loma Prieta earthquake every time the bass hit: JBLs will ****in' pound.

on a serious note;

*I don't use much EQ because most car stereo EQ's are dog poop sounding, but... Alpine EQ's sound musical to me

*JBL high end speakers are good because they are very "flat" across the audio spectrum and their mfrg is second to none

With a $1,000 budget, I think you will find it very difficult to do 2 subs, mids and highs, 2 amps, and a head unit. It can be done, but the quality of the parts will not be good.

I would suggest going with better speakers over a pricey head unit, one sub instead of two, and a single 5 channel amp to power the sub and 4 interior speakers. This isn't the best set up (separate amps are better), but you can get the most bang for your buck this way.

Are you into SQ or SPL? Decent audio is not cheap. I'd check out some of the audio forums for used deals. I'd pick up a JBL 900/5 for starters. As for the head unit I'd consider a good processor first.

To finish it off find a Clarion HU that suits what you need.

I have the JBL's in my Yukon right now and I am pretty amazed how they sound for such a low price.

I am a guy that has bounced through MB Quarts, Focal Utopias, and (my favorite) JBL GTi's driven by Phoenix Gold Zeropoint amps and a Clarion 9255. I haven't messed with my last two vehicles because I don't have the time.

Oh Jesus, those guys tried to **** me on a HU 9 years ago.

Nakamichi in dash changer. $1200 (back then) that sent the signal to a PG Ti500.4 and Focal Utopias and a simple JBL GT8 sealed.

The first CD I put in went "clunk" and never ejected or played for that matter. They tried to send me a refurb and I demanded a new one or GTFO. They refused, and I called my Credit Card company and "poof", problem solved. :D

I dropped my 9255 in for my customer to get him by until the new Eclipse HU came in and he was VERY impressed. He wanted to purchase my 9255 badly, but there is no way in hell I would let it go.

If you want to save 200 bucks, you can get an RE Audio amp for cheaper. The JL crossover section is much better, but most people won't care.

TLO 02-02-2014 11:25 AM

So, per usual, I put this on the back burner because of other bills, life, etc.

Did a little browsing on craigslist and there are some high end subs/amps listed for fairly cheap. I'm sure I run the risk of the shit being stolen, but a lot of the listings say they will let you listen before you buy.

Maybe I'll just save the money...

you can get good sound from cheaper equipment... buy a decent head unit, say clarion, buy cheaper amps and a DUAL sub...most people overkill.. one 10'sub will rock any car,.

They were awesome back in the early 2000's.

MacDaddy's and their HEX components were sweet. They had a set of amps that were nice, too.

I always a get a small smile every time some guy pulls up with the bass pounding, knowing that he'll be partially deaf in a few years.

Check the any used speaker's resistance with a voltmeter before buying.

Even that won't catch coil rub.
