Watches: Citizen Eco-Drive, Tissot or Victorinox?
Looking for a new watch, and seem to have it narrowed down to three. Would love to spend $1000+ on a watch, but decided to keep it under $500.
I keep coming back to these - wondering if anyone has any experience with these specific watchmakers, or have any suggestions in my range. Thanks! cell phones have special time feature.

do they make any like that for under $75
I know you get what you pay for, and those are all some REALLY nice watches - I like the citizen myself - but wowza on the prices - props to you good sir |
I've had a Tag Heuer for a decade. I've had 3 Citizen Eco-drives during that time as well. The Tag is still running strong and looks like the day I bought it. The Citizens are all dead and discarded.
I recommend saving some money and waiting until you can purchase a bracelet with a sapphire chrystal face. That's the most durable face out there and Citizen doesn't use it. |

The Tissot and the Victorinox have sapphire crystal faces, IIRC. |
The wife just got me an Omega for my B-day, man it's nice.
Save up and go for a little bit nicer watch. If you like watches it is worth waiting. |

The only way I can go without losing a time keeping device is if I can call the damned thing. |
I collect and work on watches. Can't go wrong with an Omega Seamaster, although if 500 clams is your cutoff, you'll be looking at a used one. Get an automatic and not a battery powered quartz watch

I certainly don't want to spend $3k on a watch. |
Have you thought about used.
You can get some good deals. |
I was watching television with my wife...literally yesterday...and saw a Citizen commercial and asked her, "who the hell buys a Citizen watch"?
|
Rolex.

Citizen? You might as well slap on a Timex. t's and p's.
|
FWIW, I've owned a Tissot and a Victorinox...both a decade ago or more as gifts. The Victorinox started running backwards, and the Tissot got lost. I can't completely blame the Tissot, but I can't think of anyone other than myself to blame, and that ain't happening.

I have been wanting a titanium Tissot T-Touch for a while. Got a hamilton khaki automatic - great watch for the price

If I wanted to ****ing impress people, I'd go blow $5-10k on a Rolex, Omega or Breitling. |
OTW is the humble Dane McCloud. Dude is buying watches, playoff tickets, and dining at st. Elmos.
|
People still wear watches?
Seems like a huge waste of money since you can just look at your phone. |
Ill never own another citizen. Great watch for looks but the crystal is shit if you do real work. Scratch like a bitch. I have the Blue Angels watch. I also have a TAG and wont have a second. My current favorite is a seiko And my indestructable is a Timex.

Go big. Get a Rolex Submariner

I like some of the Gucci Stainless, they're around 1300.00

Tissot are pretty fair. Used to be owned by Swatch IIRC.

Tags say "i cant afford a Rolex" better than any brand.
|
I owned a Tissot automatic, it was a pretty nice watch, but it disappeared during the divorce.

I own a submariner, but really want a Daytona

Yeah, not so much. We do just fine for ourselves, but work hard to set aside money for things like this 3-4 times a year. |

What are you looking for in a watch?
I probably shouldn't be giving my opinion in this thread (not that this has ever stopped me in the past), because I'm pretty tired of metal banded watches. I've owned too many of them. My favorite watch is made almost entirely out of wood. It was a little over $100, but every time I wear it, people ask me about it. It would be perfect for when I was single, because it's a great way to meet people. I'm not sure that it would be very practical as an every day watch, but it's a sweet accessory if I want to look put together while dressing down. |
Oh shit. I just looked them up, and they make digitals now. Looks like I'm getting a new watch.

Got my dad a Tissot for Christmas last year. Very good watches.

Something in the 40mm range - I like a bigger watch with some heft to it. But most importantly, I want a quality timepiece that I can wear casual or dressed up that will last me 7-10 years or more when properly cared for. Based solely on the multiple comments about Tag Heuer, this looks nice: http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-CAH1...ords=tag+heuer |

Not sure what you consider a thick wrist, but a 40mm looks good for me. I tried on a 51mm Nixon over the weekend, and it looked huge, but I could have pulled it off. |

$500 for a watch. Wow.
Other than maybe looks, what can a $500 watch do that a $50-$150 watch can't? |
FWIW, out of the 3 watches in the OP, the 2nd one is by far the best. The first looks kind of cheap and the Citizens looks busy to the point of obnoxious.
|
This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-WJ20...tag+heuer+link
But don't buy them on Amazon. I am almost certain we didn't spend more than $1k for mine. |

I like the Citizen Eco I have. 9 years and no battery replacement, runs on solar power. Hell, most of the time it sits on the kitchen counter and gets charged up by the flourescent lights in the kitchen.
$130 at Sears. It's not the top of the line like the OP is looking at, but I like that it doesn't need a new battery every year. And congrats on making a playoff spot . . . . |
I've had a citizen Eco drive perpetual calendar titanium for almost 10 years and haven't had any issues that I didn't cause myself. The crystal is scratched up pretty good, but it's been reliable.
|
D. None of the above
Spoiler!

Get a Luminox had one for 20 years never a problem. Not as big as my Seamaster but I love it. Right in that 300 range.

btw if you go into the oak park mall and see the hottest baddest bitch on earth working at the jewelry store, she lights the Citizen Nighthawk.

Watches are like so.....1997.

Orient - a good everyday watch...
I've quite a few watches in my collection: a Seiko, Bulova from my gramps, a Victorinox, a super-slim Citizen, some old Timex, and a two year old Seiko - sarb033. I often, okay almost everyday, find myself alternating between a pair of watches from Orient watches at orientwatchusa. I bought a blue and an orange faced automatic Mako watch and I love them.
Each of them cost around $75 so I didn't have to worry about getting the crystals scratched, the SS bands scuffed, etc. I wasn't expecting much for that price. Now they've sent me a 40% off code - holiday40 - but I still have these around and I don't even wear my Seiko. Don't get me wrong, I love my Seiko but I can't afford another one at the drop of a hat. The quality of these is really very good. If I leave them on my desk or in my drawer I don't have to worry about my kids or students taking/breaking them. Hell, I get looks of bewilderment when I tell them that my watches wind themselves. I'm not telling you to buy them. Just look... RainMaker p.s. A good Seiko site - seiyajapan.com - I just love the looks of the SEIKO Automatic Presage SARX017 - at $508. It's got a classic design that not everybody appreciates |

$395

Every one. Car, TV, Computer, etc. Just having a watch is ridiculously redundant... |
You can get a fake Rolex for under $300. And some of them actually tell time.

I get the same feeling about nice watches as I do about nice cars and high quality firearms. There is just something viscerally desirable about those things. |

Loved them when I was growing up, though. Had 3 Timex from 1977-1990. |

The only brands that appreciate are pretty much Patek Phillipe and Rolex. And Rolex is going to fall off the map because they sourcing parts out of Asia. If you're going to spend money the money on a nice watch, I'd urge you to spend more, like $3k plus. If not, just get a cheap watch or use your smartphone. The sub 3k range is the least worth it. |
3 grand for a watch?
Holy shit. Can't even imagine. But, then I'm just a lowly truck driver. |
IIRC, Movado makes some nice watches in your price range.

Basically, if you get the starter luxury watch or a commonplace brand (like Citizen or Gucci or Coach), the price is going to sink like a rock. If you spend more, however, and get the right model and brand (like Patek Phillipe or an Hermes bag), the price really will go up and sometimes at a surprising rate. My wife got this bag (as a gift) three years ago that she can sell for double the price now. You want to buy the bag or watch that bored, rich people are going to have a hard time finding on ebay basically. |

Interesting. |
I've been a collector of watches for some 30 years now. Goofy, I guess, but they always appealed to me…
I have been wearing a Citizen "Blue Angels" Eco-drive since they came out with them about 14 years ago. Still keeps time as well today as it did back then. I had a running thing with Seiko back in the 70s when they used a perpetual timing mechanism (like Rolex) LONG before they switched over to Quartz. Good watches as well. I've owned Rolex and Omega - and in my opinion, highly overpriced. I recommend the Citizen. They, too, can get a tad pricey - but nowhere near in the ROlex and Omega price range. |
