Gas Grills
I have a Kenmore gas grill and a Weber 22" kettle charcoal grill.
I used my Weber for smoking and whatnot and the gas grill for quick cooking. The flavorizer bars and the drip tray sheet metal is all rotted out on the gas grill so I need to either replace these pieces or replace the whole damn grill. I know the Weber gas grills are good but real expensive. I'd like to find one that has a smoking tray built right in and maybe an infared burner for searing steaks. I may even consider a Traeger. Any ideas? |
I recommend one with a side burner. You'll thank me later.

I've got a Brinkmann. It's a good medium between shit ass terrible walmart quality and weber. My buddy and my mom have a traeger. It doesn't get very hot so it is about equivalent time wise to using charcoal. You can do some nice things with it but getting a nice good sear on a burger is tough. My mom has had a ****ton of problems with hers. My buddy has had none except when his dog ate the wires. Not sure what means over the general population, but there are at least potential for problems. I'd like to have a traeger but the gas is the better value for me until I have far more disposable income to run both. |
I've never used my side burner either. Probably because I'm lazy and don't want to have to fill the tank more often.

Supposedly the quality of Traeger has plummeted over the last 5+ years.
I'd recommend Yoder if you're looking for a quality pellet feeder. |

I bought the Genesis 10 years ago and never looked back. I have a cover for it and still looks new. I just grilled 2 weeks ago in -10F weather. This baby ran up to 600F in 5 min. Nice sear. Yes expensive but over time cheap. Try and buy them at the end of the season...got mine in Oct list was ?? $600 from HD on sale for ?525. Best money spent on a grill. Sidebar-has a side burner which was used once for a marinade. Worthless. |

all you need is this for smoking and grilling, and the electric starter makes it easy as hell. It'll do it all for you

thats a Weber Smokey Mountain. It comes in 18" and 22.5". I have the bigger one but either will do. I've seen guys modify them with a gas insert and a propane line as well, but that sort of defeats the purpose.

Weber ep330. Thing is boss. I wish the side burner was optional in the Genesis line. The only thing I use it for is lighting my charcoal chimney thingy.

I realize for $200 I should not expect the world but to pay $1000-1200 for the same sized Weber doesn't do it for me.
My community will not allow a charcoal grill on the decks Any comments or reviews or past experience with this brand would be greatly appreciated. :thumb: |
It will last a year or two. Maybe three if you're diligent about replacing the parts that rust out.

Yeah, one of my wife's vendors gave us a CharBroil gas grill as a wedding gift (lol), it's on year 3 and I'm looking to replace it. They rust fast, so I'd get a decent cover for it. Plus, I'd see if they'd sell you that display. You need Tyler Wilson size hands to put that together. I walked away from that assembly all gnarled up and angry.

Ditto as to the weber genesis. I had 2 other "cheap" grills that lasted 2-3 years each. I had covers for them and didn't help much. 8 years ago plopped down $500 at the end of the season for the genesis. I couldn't be happier. Best money I've spent in years. The wife wasn't so pleased at first, but now fully appreciates it as well.
As everyone else has said: nice sear, 600 degrees with a nice northern wind, even heat etc. I will say that I will finally have to replace the cover:) |
If you are looking for a pellet smoker go with Green Mountain. More features and better quality than a Treager.

I have a Weber Genesis Gold that I bought in 2000. The only thing I've replaced are the flavorizer bars and the cooking grates (they get the most abuse). The burners still work perfectly. Oh, the igniter died a long time ago and I've never replaced it. I just use a torch igniter. I've never known a built-in igniter that's worth a shit on any brand. I don't keep mine covered so some of the enamel paint has lost its luster, but hell, it's 14 years old and still grills up a storm.
Edit: My Weber is natural gas. Had to pay to extend a NG line outside. I think it was about $100. Saved that in NG prices vs. Propane tanks several times over. |

I have three, but I have one I'd really recommend for what you are wanting.
It's this. The Weber Q200. It's plenty big to cook for 6-8 people, will sear steaks just fine as long as you are using a regular size propane tank, and it's light enough to take in the trunk to picnics, events, etc. You can buy it without a stand as shown in the picture,or get the stand and it simply lifts off the stand to make it portable, in which case, it'll also burn off of the little green propane canisters, but it doesn't quite qet as hot using those. Having said that , I used it with those small canisters for the first couple of years. I've had mine for 5 years and it's money. Also, it doesn't rust and is a quarter inch thick, so it retains heat. |

MMMmmm. I just got a gas grill, Weber Spirit. Debated moving away from charcoal for months, and spent way more than I intended, but all the advice I got from grillers said to suck it up and get the quality. I did and have had zero buyers remorse. I grill every day now. No more heating up the house with cooking heat in summer, and everything is delicious.
Favorite unplanned grill success was grilling a wolferman's english muffin and red peppers and jalapenos. Just stuff I had around, but it was so simple and delicious. brushed a little garlic olive oil on the muffin then piled on the grilled peppers for a perfect lunch. Would never have fired up coals for such a thing. |
I bought a used Weber off craigslist. I loaded it in the back of the truck, drove it home and noticed one of the burner dials blew away coming home. Called Weber up and they mailed me a new one free of charge.

I love my cheap gas grill. 3 burner plus the side. never used the side. I use one on low and put the ribs on the non fire side for 5 or so hours. All I get are rave reviews.

I'm putting in a new pavestone deck soon. Will but the high end grill then. But I've had a charbroil for years with a good cover and never had a problem with it. I know it's the lower end of the spectrum, but if you take care of them, they'll last 10 years.

Next time, and I don't know why, I think I may try one of these infrared grills... Just seem interesting and will be a fun challenge to learn to grill on.

Lots of good advice already, but I'll double-click on a few points.
1. Buy a good grill. I went with a weber genesis. 2. If you wait til the end of the summer, even into the winter, those left over grills get seriously marked down. 3. Natural gas is really nice. Cheaper fuel. No stockpiling of LP tanks and getting them filled. Nobody asks to borrow the grill. They don't sell well, so there are always a few left in October, just waiting for you to purchase at deep discount. |

Due to the fact that I don't even have a grill now, I'm not in a position to wait until October for the discounts so i got to suck it up and pay top dollar unless a Father's Day Sale this weekend. I'm convinced from everyone here and some other reviews online that I'm going to get what I pay for with a Charbroiler but the only unanswered question seems to be how they cook as opposed to how they last. Everyone says they have a short life but no one mentioned their cooking ability. Any comments on the Charbroiler Grill cooking quality? |

I am on my 2nd treager. My original 12 year old one is still working fine. I haven't had the problems others have apparently. It gets plenty hot to sear steaks, although admittedly not over 400 in the winter. I have replaced a thermostat, but it was 6 years old when I did it. I love the food that it produces. They are expensive though.

While there is no doubt Weber is one of the best out there with quality, features, and durability, it now appears that some of their lower entry grills are having a lot of parts made in China and cutting corners. I would only pay $500 so that cut out a lot of the Webers. After reading thousands of reviews and stories, the Broil King fit my bill perfectly. I have a Weber Genesis 3000 that sits under cover on my screened in porch. It also has a nice grill cover, so it never gets wet or weathered. It's in terrific condition, and I've had it for about six years now. Last week I replaced the original porcelain grates and flavorizer bars with all stainless steel. I bought the replacements from a company outside St. Louis that makes after market parts for grills. The stainless was a heavier gage than the Weber OEM stuff, and half the price. Now all the insides of the grill are stainless, it heats up fast, and cooks great. After you use this grill for a few years, you'll probably get hooked on grilling, and will want a Weber. I'm going out to look at a Weber Smokey Mountain smoker later today, perhaps as a BD present to myself.

I bought a used WSM today for $170. Guy wanted $200 for it, but it was dirty and had some rust and a few chips in the outer porcelain. He told me it was an original 1980 model, the first year Weber built the WSM. I took it home, put some Brillo Pads, WD-40 and elbow grease on it, and it cleaned up pretty nice. For the most part, as long as the seals are good, it should work fine. Weber's seem to be tooled well where the parts fit together perfectly. Last year I bought a starter smoker, a Red Stone, from Tractor Supply, paid about $80 for it. It leaks smoke like crazy, but works OK. Doesn't have a big capacity. This WSM is the 18.5" model (the middle size of three sizes.) A new one at Lowe's is $300, so getting this one at almost half price hopefully will be a good transaction. Pictures of the WSM and my Weber Gas Grill (which I absolutely LOVE) are attached:

I'm looking at choosing between a Spirit SP 310 and a Genesis 310. The Spirit SP has stainless steel cooking grates vs. the porcelain enameled cast iron grates on the Genesis 310. The Genesis is built sturdier and looks a bit nicer, but doesn't seemed to be a big difference. Difference in cost between the 2 is $150. Interested in anyone with experience either way. I'm sold on Weber, now just have to choose which one.
