Good place to eat in O.P.

I have some relatives coming to Overland Park for the afternoon and i'm looking for a good place to eat. Nothing too formal. Just a casual place with good food.

suggestions?

Chazno 02-28-2014 10:31 AM

Good Call.

I designed the outdoor patio/fireplace/pergola addition a few years ago. :thumb:

I know...i was surprised too. We went for Sunday Brunch...which is usually awesome, but for whatever reason on this particular day it wasn't. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't what i was used to. They had some of the popular items (at least for us) missing from the brunch.

I will still go back, we were just disappointed on this one particular day.

Ruchi's Indian Cuisine @ Antioch and College.

yum.

Fansy the Famous Bard 02-28-2014 10:44 AM

Or...

If you're on the north side of OP, go to 'the Holy Land' near 87th and Quivira.

My favorite lunch spot, without a doubt.

It's technically in Lenexa, but close enough.

Neat, I'll check that out. And, I guess it's Nall and 119th, not 135th. I always do that...

Oh no... I actually like Bo Lings... it's pretty good for a chain.

Another one i like is Pei Wei.

sedated 02-28-2014 10:48 AM

Jasmine Thai on 119th & Roe is pretty good if you are looking for Thai/Chinese.

Nicer places, but: J. Gilbert's (steaks) and Garozzo's (Italian) are great.

I've had solid experiences at Nick and Jake's (kind of a nicer sports bar/restaurant combo) on 135th near Metcalf.

I know that Bo Lings has multiple locations (two, I think?), but I don't really think of that as a chain restaurant. Now, Pei Wei certainly is and I think their food is better than PF Changs, and MUCH more reasonably priced.

Simply Red 02-28-2014 10:57 AM

Honestly the first restaurant that I think and dream about that is in KC is that Taco Johns.

Amazing place for good 'fast' Mexican. Not sure if OP has one, but if they do; you need to be all over it! Taco Burger is nice w/ their mild tangy sauce.

I think PF Changs owns Pei Wei. I guess as a lower priced alternative.

My first recommendation to any person visiting OP will be OK Joe's, but one of my second favorite spots there is Joy Wok. It's a buffet, but it's very busy and therefore the food doesn't sit out for very long at all.

Taco Johns boo.

Taco Johns tastes like someone poured an entire salt shaker all over the food.

I was under the impression that the closest Taco Johns to KC was in Lawrence. Turns out there is one in Blue Springs (which is still about as long a drive from OP)

There's one in Olathe. Last time I was in Olathe, anyway. Over near 151st and 35.

blaise 02-28-2014 11:43 AM

If you have a group then a place like Jason's Deli isn't bad. There's usually for anyone. It's casual. Easy to split the bill.

No kidding, if I see a Pei Wei near a PF Changs, I'll pick the Pei Wei, and not because it's less money. Pei Wei's Mongolian Beef blows PF Chang's out of the wok.

One of my favorite dishes for that sorta thing.

PF Changs Mongolian Beef is a tad chewy/tough.

I enjoyed their grilled stuffed taco at the Lawrence location last week. Didn't care for the taco bravo. I'm not a big taco burger guy, but I'll check it next time I'm there.

There's 6 or 7 Bo Lings in the KC area last i saw.

And... i thought PF Changs and Pei Wei were the same place?

They actually do have one in "old" OP - near 79th and Metcalf, by the farmer's market.

Pablo 02-28-2014 01:41 PM

I could eat three taco burgers from Taco Johns. And a bucket of potato oles.

LMAO

SR really loves that place. He's mentioned it dozens of times on this site. And it is pretty good for fast-food greasy ass Mexican fare.

I would promptly empty my bowels after eating the aforementioned meal. Pros/Cons and stuff.

check out the #3 restaurant in America...(probably refers to orig loc, but OP loc has same menu/food)

If you feel adventurous try El Salvadoreno in downtown OP. Great food! If you have never eaten food from El Salvador try the sampler platter.

Wil Jenny's
Tex Mex with a wide variety. Try the grilled asparagus

OK Joes does a great job of consistency between the 3 locations. Most BBQ joints will vary when additional restaurants open up, so gotta give them credit.

I've never had good Texas BBQ, so I guess this is KC BBQ. Seriously, the brisket might be the best in town. Wide variety of menu items (e.g. pot roast, southern pecan chicken, etc.). Prices are very reasonable (generally in the $12-$15 range).

Stay away from the Margarita's though; they're way below average.....only thing I've had there that was sub-par.

I've taken many out of towers there for a meal, and to a person they've liked it.

Good luck!

HonestChieffan 02-28-2014 07:49 PM

The burnt ends are tasty

They have a soup and salad option which is nice

The fried pickles are great

I enjoy the hell out of the smothered sirloin

I took a couple guests there and they were pleasantly surprised with the variety and overall experience

I go just for the grilled asparagus tips lolz

You are also not far from Stroud's fried chicken. I haven't actually been yet but apparently it's amazing.

Okay, the 5 wings for 3 bucks at Mickey d's, bad idea. Co-worker said they were the bomb, pretty sure I just crapped blood. Do not recommend.

Incorrect (as of 6 months or so ago). The one in old OP is newer than the one on 127th. I believe they both still exist, and the peanut website agrees

Yeah, those burritos were my go-to, I think because they reminded me of school food burritos. They had a surprisingly good tenderloin sandwich, some of the best tator tots and a fantastic milk shake. Nothing but regret the day after though.

Also, Stewie's suggestion of El Salvadoreno is on point.
