Chiefs see major defections on first day of free agency [PFT]

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...f-free-agency/

Before Tuesday, a gap existed between the Broncos and Chiefs. On Tuesday, that gap widened.

The Broncos added safety T.J. Ward and, in one of the biggest surprises of the day, cornerback Aqib Talib. While the Broncos saw guard Zane Beadles leave for Jacksonville and likely will lose linebacker Wesley Woodyard (who lost his starting job in the middle last season), those aren’t major departures. Likewise, the Broncos realize receiver Eric Decker won’t be back; with Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas in their contract years, it makes no sense to pay all three.

In Kansas City, that sign in the photo may have been taken a bit too literally.

Five players ran for the exits in the first 90 minutes of free agency. Gone are three offensive linemen: left tackle Branden Albert, guard Geoff Schwartz, and guard Jon Asamoah. Receiver/punt returner Dexter McCluster took off for Tennessee. On defense, end Tyson Jackson went to Atlanta, likely lured in part by Falcons assistant G.M. Scott Pioli, who made Jackson the third overall pick in the 2009 draft.

The Chiefs have kept in recent days linebacker Frank Zombo and safety Husain Abdullah.

While the loss of Asamoah and Schwartz essentially amount to losing one full-time player, since they essentially shared the right guard job last year, the Chiefs now must find a way to replace both players and, more importantly, their long-time left tackle. Tackle Eric Fisher became the first overall pick in the 2013 draft under the apparent assumption that he’d succeed Albert. Based on Fisher’s struggles last year and the performance of Donald Stephenson in place of Albert, Fisher may stay on the right side.

With the Raiders making a big push to improve their overmatched roster and the Chargers doing what they can with the cap space they have, the Chiefs may have to worry less about catching Denver in 2014 — and more about being caught by San Diego and Oakland.

not good

Messier 03-12-2014 08:39 AM

The Raiders, while active, are making really stupid moves. The division will basically be unchanged hierarchy wise.

texaschiefsfan 03-12-2014 08:39 AM

It's cool. The Chiefs plan is to scrap this season because Manning and the tough schedule. 2015 will be much easier.

BlackHelicopters 03-12-2014 08:40 AM

Lots of work to do.

Teams take a step back. It happens. I expected the Chiefs to regress back to 7 or 8 wins this season. Note that I said "regress", meaning they were performing above their mean due to a number of factors (overachieving talent, easy schedule, the "new coach bounce") last season. I believe the mean will slide up in '15 - while this guarantees nothing, the Chiefs should have a better roster than in '13 if they make common sense personnel decisions.

It's for Milkman.

You can't play if you can't pay. As soon as Manning announced that he would be back, I thought the best way to go was build beyond him. We'll be alright.

THIS WTF ROFL

Mr. Plow 03-12-2014 09:09 AM

At least we got Zombo under contract.....

Halfcan 03-12-2014 09:21 AM

So people are unhappy we didn't pay the 100 million in contracts it would have taken to keep these guys?

Seems we cut a lot of expensive dead weight while the cap cheating donks threw some big money around to players that probably won't finish those contracts.

Number of ****s given = 0.

I wish we would cheat the ****ing cap and get to a gawdamn Superbowl before I'm of the age that I have to eat a nice steak through a ****ing straw.

Free agency is a stupid endeavor in the NFL, I really don't know why you're all freaking out. 9/10 of these guys are washed up by the time they reach their new destination.... save a QB you hardly ever ever get impact out of other teams older - best years behind them - players.... so, have at, Broncos. The Seahawks pushed your shit in on national TV with a homegrown, young group of bad asses - that is - and always has been- the model. Being reactionary and jealous of these showy moves is stupid. We need a great draft and to continue to develop our own young players, that is all.

The broncos are in desperation mode.

Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Marshawn Lynch.

Charles Brown would be a decent swing option that should come cheap.

Which if they didn't get big signing bonus is not going to hurt them as those players won't see all of those years either.

Of course I have came to the point we might never win another playoff game years ago. Which sadly makes watching easier.

but we did smart by not over paying or keeping any of those guys.

Comp picks and a 4th place schedule, this is the path to stardom :)

Schwartz is the only guy that bothers me from our losses.

WhawhaWhat 03-12-2014 02:12 PM

I was still waiting for the major defections. Is that in the link?

Eleazar 03-12-2014 02:16 PM

The only one I care one whit about losing is Schwartz. As a whole it's not that bad.

Mr. Laz 03-12-2014 02:19 PM

This is a hurtful thread

We lost a bunch of starters. No matter how you look at it, that's major.

Mr. Laz 03-12-2014 02:23 PM

losing 5 starters and adding none is a bad day no matter how you slice it

Sure, but we supposedly have Albert replaced. Jackson and McCluster could be replaced by any just-a-guy. Asamoah blows. I don't think any of those will really hurt us but Schwartz... apart from the daily discussion we've been having on CP about Fisher over the past year.

Starters are never easily replaced, if for no other reason than disruption to continuity.

If they were solid starters I agree. The amount of rotation and below average play should lessen the blow. Hell, the fact we are trying to change by not paying known ability is a plus. We knew they were average at best to meh, now they are gone. Would rather have young and hungry players willing to try and improve.

Now there is a chance we get worse players to replace. But i will always take that chance.

though i still thought we could trade albert.

Pasta Little Brioni 03-12-2014 04:15 PM

Yet people here have said all those guys suck at various times
