Gas on the Fire: Shutdown Corner Gives Chiefs "F" in FA.
|
It's unfortunate that the Chiefs didn't do anything in the off-season to build upon Smith's tremendous performance in the playoffs.
The team desperately needs another playmaker, either at WR or TE, and there were a couple of great options of the former to bring in that could have had a big-time impact. Opportunities lost when you have an in-his-prime QB. The window is short. We paid a win-now price with the trade for Smith, and then the team sits on its hands. Illogical as all ****. |
Kinda like losing the 28 point lead in the playoffs. As a Chiefs fan did you really expect anything different? Speaking as a Chiefs fan it couldn't of been any different.

We haven't really used free agency, though?
I'm not going to get too butthurt until we see what happens in the draft. WR in Rd. 1 would forgive a lot for me. |
We will see how it plays out. Need progression out of existing guys on roster...beats signing the retirement home like the other Afc west rivals

Tough to read the Smith trade now as much more than a directive to put asses in the seats. |

And none of this even matters if berry, Houston, and Smith aren't extended. If the chiefs handle those three things, that's a successful offseason |
1. sign Miles Austin, he's probably the best remaining out on the market, and hope he can play more than a handfull of games.
2. draft TE Eric Ebron 1st rd pick. Dude's a beast, and will only get faster and stronger. 3. draft RB/KR/WR Dri Archer in the 3rd. This is our new Dexter McCluster, but this guy is lightning fast and MUCH quicker than DMC. 4. Everything else should go Oline/Secondary/Dline-front7 whether its addressed by FA or draft. |

If you are "grading free agency", whatever the significance of that is, I don't see how you could give the team anything other than an F. They lost numerous starters and signed no one.
Of course, most of we who follow the team don't feel like any of them are big losses - except Schwartz and Albert, but we knew Albert as leaving and the person who the team sees as his replacement is on the roster. Given the cap situation and who was available, I'm not sure we ever could have made a meaningful splash in free agency or if we should have done so. |
Accurate assessment is accurate
|
I don't think losing Albert is that big of a deal, I bet that he doesn't justify his pay down in Miami. He had trouble staying on the field. I predict he will miss 1/3 of his future games.

Best chance we probably have left is that someone already on the roster breaks out. No clue who that might be, of course... |
Shocking

I'd go F- on this.

What did the packers get this year? Last year?
We are following their formula, so if they got a higher grade then this writer can **** right off. |
This is a brand new discussion.

But, its hard to argue this was a successful FA period, even though I think Walker will be better than Jackson. |

The irony is that signing Sanders would have taken a decent amount of sting out of things, and getting D. Jackson would have been a HR. |

We lost Albert, who we all knew we'd lose for the last 2 years, and some guys we won't miss. I don't get all the bitching about this, I really don't.
We didn't sign big name free agents? For every Brees there's 500 Deion Branch's. Free agency is fools gold, but it is fun to bitch. |

One position that I had hoped that the Chiefs would address through free agency is at safety. I liked the re-signing of Husain Abdullah and hopefully Sanders Commings will be able to be a good safety but that position was such a vulnerability, you would think it would have top priority for KC.
In free agency we have had a safety musical chairs game with players going back a forth in the NFL. The latest switch is Chicago Bear’s safety Major Wright has just signed to reunite with Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers already have Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson so Wright signed a 1 year deal to be a backup. Adrian Wilson released by the New England Patriots after being injured for the 2013 season. Safety Patrick Chung returns to New England Patriots from Philadelphia Eagles for 1 year $1MM. Indianapolis Colts safety Antoine Bethea signs with San Francisco 49ers for 4 year $21MM. Atlanta Falcons cut Thomas DeCoud and he’s making visits to Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers. Texan’s safety Danieal Manning signed 1 year deal with Cincinnati Bengals for 1 year $1.6MM. CFL Toronto Argonauts safety Marcus Ball signs with New Orleans Saints on 3 year deal. Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark signs with Washington Redskins for 1 year $1MM. 49ers Donte Whitner signs 4 year $28MM deal with Cleveland Browns. Philadelphia Eagles sign Seattle Seahawks safety Chris Maragos for 3 year $4MM. Baltimore Ravens James Ihedigbo signs with Detroit Lions for 2 year $3.1MM. Texans sign Miami Dolphins safety Chris Clemons for 2 year $2.7MM. Oakland re-signs Usama Young for $2.3MM KC Chiefs Kendrick Lewis signs with Texans for 1 year $795,000. Baltimore Ravens sign St. Louis Rams safety Darian Stewart for 1 year 1.3MM. Cleveland Browns T.J. Ward signs with Denver Broncos for 4 year $22.5MM. Chicago Bears sign Dallas Cowboys safety Danny McCray for 1 year $790,938 for and re-sign safety Craig Steltz for 1 year $795,000. Chicago Bears add safeties M.D. Jennings Green Bay Packers 1 year $745,000 and Ryan Mundy New York Giants 2 year $3MM. Philadelphia Eagles re-sign safety Nate Allen for 1 year $3MM. Kansas City Chiefs re-sign safety Husain Abdullah for 2 year $2.2MM Oakland Raiders re-sign safety Charles Woodson for 1 year $3.5MM. Carolina Panthers signs New Orleans Saints Roman Harper for 2 year $4.5MM. Taylor Mays re-signs with Cincinnati Bengals for 1 year $795,000. Kansas City safety Quintin Demps signs with New York Giants for 1 year $1MM. Safety Jeromy Miles re- signs with Baltimore Ravens for 1 year $795,000. Brandon Meriweather re-signs with Washington Redskins for 1 year $1MM. New Orleans Saints safety Malcom Jenkins signs with Philadelphia Eagles for 3 year $16.5MM. Carolina Panthers safety Mike Mitchell signs with Pittsburgh Steelers for 5 year $25MM. Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd signs with New Orleans Saints for 6 years $54MM. Darrell Stuckey re-signs with San Diego Chargers for 4 year $7.6MM. Miami Dolphins sign Louis Delmas Detroit Lions safety for 1 year $3.5MM. Will Allen S/CB signs with Pittsburgh Steelers for 1 year $1MM Steve Gregory contract terminated by New England Patriots. Not much news on him. New Orleans RFA Safety Rafael Bush signs with Atlanta Falcons. Still waiting to see if New Orleans matches. |

It couldn't be that they paid a higher price for the best QB on the market to have a base to start from. Yes we all know the cap can be manipulated but we have cap issues that if we went out and signed Byrd, Jackson and so on we would likely not be able to sign Berry, Houston, and Smith within this next year. Those players should all have priority over FA unless it is their replacement. We are not replacing those pieces. We are going to try and retain those pieces for a long time to come. |

There's no doubt in my mind that's where Dorsey is trying to take things... but he was willing to slap on some band-aids LAST year. Why is he not willing to slap on some band-aids THIS year? DeSean Jackson wouldn't even be a band-aid. He'd be a young, prime member of your core, a dynamic playmaker whom you can build around. And would allow you to feel comfortable actually releasing Bowe when it makes sense next year. This board should not be surprised when this team wins 6-7 games this year. |

Hard not to agree with this rating. Although I could care less about the loss of Tyson Jackson. Not too broken up about the loss of Albert either. When he is healthy and in playing shape, he is a very good LT. That seemed to rarely happen. The loss(es) at guard will sting. Schwartz played well and I didn't believe Asamoah to be as bad as some here thought. Would have loved to see KC bring one of them back in. McCluster made a lot of big plays last year, and won't be as easy to replace as some think IMO. He became Smith's go-to on 3rd downs and had a nice season as a punt returner. A good locker-room guy as well from all accounts. With a lack of threats on offense already, it was tough to see him walk. DeSean Jackson or Emmanuel Sanders would have replaced Dex with ease...but did not happen.
I still believe there are some quality FA's left to be had. It would be interesting to see what a KC offense would like if a Miles Austin or Sidney Rice and Jermichael Finley (question marks I know) were added before the draft. You also have to wonder why no contracts were or have been restructured to provide more cap room. Were the players even asked to shift some money around? Are they unwilling to help given the past few years? Interesting to say the least. |

It's hard to imagine 2014 upgrades at all of those spots that needed upgrades relying on that formula. |

Vance Walker was a solid pickup. I don't mind the depth signing of Chris Owens either. Maybe Dressler is that "crafty move" this year? Too many question marks though in my opinion. Edit: I guess you can assume Dorsey/Reid are relying on guys like Travis Kelce, Sanders Commings, AJ Jenkins, Marcus Cooper, Mike Catapano, Nico Johnson, Rishaw Johnson, and Eric Kush to take gigantic steps this coming season. |
It seems more than obvious that the Hunt's don't care about making a superbowl run. I think Peterson tried to make it happen with the Vermeil run to give Lamar a superbowl before he died, but sans that attempt, it seems obvious that the Hunt's just see the Chief's as an investment that they are getting a great return for. They know if they keep this team at 9-7, give or take, the fans will continue to pay the absurd amount of money to fill the stadium every home game.

I still think there's a possibility with Hemingway, too. Being a Michigan homer and all. :) But one or the other turning into a player as valuable as DeSean Jackson at this point would be a pretty big surprise, although nothing's impossible. I probably should add that while I did agree with the original sentiment about the time it takes receivers to develop, I will also acknowledge that this does have the potential to be a really great class of receivers. |

I love how Albert misses 9 games out of a possible 96 in his 6 years here, and people are making him out as the second coming of Tony Moeaki or Brodie Croyle.
Most of this board severely underestimates the drop off from a Top 10 LT to essentially a rookie, who couldn't handle the opposition's 2nd best pass rusher last year and is going to face the best of the best this year. |

It will be a minor miracle if the Chiefs season in 2014 is anything but a complete disaster.

Awesome. |
Let's see:
Albert sucked. - Technically one of the worst offensive tackles in the league. Led the team in untimely, dive killing penalties, minor injuries that would destroy the offensive rhythm and seemed to enjoy using the field as a matress as he was laying on it horizontally as much as he was blocking. Replaced by: Eric Fisher, who already has infinitely more skills for the position than Albert has. Asamoah sucked. - Was as good in his fourth season as he was in his rookie season. Couldn't get out of his stance quick enough and was a virtual sieve. Replaced by: Eric Kush or Rokevious Watkins. Both of whom couldn't be any worse than Asamoah. McCluster sucked. - Slow, short and drops passes like the football was on fire. One decent season as a PR/slot guy. Yawn. Replaced by: Weston Dressler, who is the exact same guy as McCluster with better hands. Jackson sucked. - Everybody around here for four years has bitched about this guy wasting a roster spot. Replaced by: Vance Walker, who is a much better pass rusher from the five tech spot. The one guy we lost that everyone laments was Schwartz, who is on his fourth team in four years and wasn't good enough to beat that tomato can Asamoah out of a job until he got injured. He was replaced by the identical Jeff Linkenbach. Wash. The team did not waste any money on any of the over priced, injured, aging locker room cancer type players that typically populate the free agent market. Addition by subtraction. Didn't have to piss anyway any excessive monies in order to keep marginal level players on the roster. Chiefs Free Agency Offseason Grade: A+ |

But otherwise no difference. |
Quote:
If we decided that all those guys weren't good enough then we should have replaced them in free agency. Our backups couldn't beat all those 'sucky' guys out of their starting jobs last year but now we expect them to be better than the guys they couldn't win a job from? Regardless of how you want to spin it, last year and this year represent conflicting philosophies. Last year was a 'add talent wherever/whenever you can to win game'. This year is 'patiently build for the future and avoid spending big money on old guys'. flip-flopping between philosophies is not a good idea, it almost always ends in failure. |
Quote:
What they did last year was to provide a foundation for the team under a new scheme, coaching staff and front office. They needed to get players in here immediately who could provide a platform from whence to build a new team from. Alex Smith, Mike DeVito and Sean Smith were guys we had to have. Cornerstone type guys. At this point going forward, it's about team building as it should be - through the draft, getting the guys who fit your system the best, allowing them to grow as a cohesive unit and coalesce into a high level football team. Seattle, the Packers, the Eagles of the mid-Reid era all did this and this is what you are going to see now. Signing stop gap, over priced, injured guys from the free agency wire is a horrible concept to team building. Look at what happened to the Chiefs during the Vermeil years, especially on the defensive side of the ball, when this was the prime philosophy. We jettisoned four guys who were mediocre/marginal talents that really didn't fit the scheme we now have in place and they have all been replaced by guys who are, at the very worst, lateral moves. I give credit to the new Chiefs FO/coaching staff for not taking the "quick fix" route and rather building as a team should be built or overpaying for mediocrity. A+. |
Mike Devito and Sean Smith are cornerstone players.
I've officially heard it all. Sacc, May you asphyxiate on the vomitus of a carnivore. |

last year was a PR quick fix to keep SOC from flying planes over Arrowhead and now we are rebuilding 3-5 year plan while Charles,DJ,Flowers,Hali keep us from totally sucking |
Until all of the in-house replacements prove themselves atleast AS good as the players that left, I've gotta go with a D.
Vance Walker kept it from being an F, his track record indicates much more ability to pressure the QB than Jackson had, we badly needed that from atleast one of the end spots. |
I guess it depends on what goals you'd like to see the Chiefs have for next year.
If you wanted the Chiefs to aggressively build off their 11-5/one and done in the playoffs season to have a legit chance at advancing further in the playoffs and competing for a Super Bowl, then the offseason grade is an F. If you are a true fan, happy with the thought of 7-9, building for the future, etc. then you would probably give the Chiefs an A+. |

Oh, God. He actually said that. I read his assessment of the guys we lost and brought in and skipped his next post for fear of losing IQ points. |
