NYT: How Fans Choose Their Team
Pretty good article that looks at nationwide branding analysis with sports.

Before reading the article, my guess is:
1. Geography 2. Team that wins Championships from age 5-14 |
In retrospect, why in the blue **** am I a Chiefs' fan?
THANKS A LOT DAD! |

Age 8/9 seems to be the magic age for boys. Local team wins championship at that age - they get a fan for life. |
KC Wolf = Joe Camel used as a way to addict kids to the Chiefs' shitty product when they're young
|
I blame my dad too but it was more rebellion than anything else. Dirty gang bangers loved the Raiders in L.A., you always thumb your nose at San Diego when you're from L.A.; as the slightly cooler cousin, and Dad always said the Broncos were dirty and that Frontiere probably was too but for sure she was a crazy bitch.
|
I blame Joe Montana. I came over with him when he was traded. He owes me.
|
Women don't get hooked on a sports team from when they are young, because, well most girls don't watch sports as children. But when their guy friends get into it when they are in their 20's or in college, they start to get in on the act.

It was a coin flip whether or not I would be a Broncos fan or Chiefs fan. I live in the "Great Divide" of fans, and Denver was going to the Super Bowl (and getting fisted) every year while I was in the age bracket of picking a team. My Oldest brother is to blame, too. He made sure that I chose eternal pain over happiness. |
My dad was a 9ers fan, my mom a Raiders fan (kinda...she was from Oakland before it was a total shithole). Dad bought a poster for me and my brother's room, a picture of an end zone pile up with the Chiefs and the Raiders. I picked red, bro picked black. This was in like 1975 or something.
I've never looked back. Cuz, I enjoy the pain. I enjoy the misery and frustration. Because I'm... In. Chiefs. Hell. And now you know, the rrrrrrest of the story... |

I chose the Chiefs because I was a young moron and they were my local team. Didn't hurt that they were actually worth a shit in my 8-12 year old range. 1994-1998.

Pure genetics for me. Father to son.

I became a Chiefs fan out of hate for a 9ers fan. I hated that old, fat hepatitis infested bitch. She was a 9ers fan and it was the year Montana played them. She was mad apparently because Montana "betrayed" the 9ers. I rooted for the Chiefs to win to spite her and it worked out. I've been a fan ever since. |
DT won me over
|
I was from St Louis and the Cards left when I was a kid so didn't really get I to football til my late teens. I worked at Tippins and the 2 managers there were KC fans and they pulled me in. Been riding this roller coaster ever since. This was prob 2 years before Joe came to the Chiefs.
|
Bob Dole is a Royals and Chiefs fan because both teams sent players to Bob Dole's elementary school every year.
|
40 years ago the kid across the street that I played football with, his favorite team was the Vikings.
I chose the Chiefs just to get at him because I found out they had beaten his team 4 years earlier in the SB. Plain and simple. I've suffered ever since. |
When your growing up and you only get one channel on tv, and the team they show is the Chiefs, do you really have a choice? Go Chiefs. Chiefs every Sunday love the Chiefs. It didn't hurt they had the greatest defense ever. A defense that would punish your ass. Linebacking corp from hell. Defensive front that was nasty. Then they all got old and the magic smoke hasn't been recaptured as of yet. But it will happen though.

I left Portland and moved to Columbia in late 1990. Never really got into football (the 'Hawks just never did it for me in the days of Largent and Zorn) until I started watching that defense of the early 90's. Since then, have moved to Flagstaff (could not get into Jake and the Cards :Lin: ) and now Texas but still follow the Chiefs.
This place is certainly a contributing factor to my staying a Chiefs fan. |
