So why is Smiff not wanting to negotiate? Gonna be a costly pickup if he bolts at the end of his contract

He wants to pick up his last big payday. Considering that his arrival stabilized the position for the Chiefs and completely turned their fortunes around, he obviously has that information going to the negotiating table. Chiefs don't have much cap space to work with, so this could end up as a colossal fail by John Dorsey. Trading 2 second rounders to get him, only to have him leave after his second season would be a castastrophic blow to Dorsey's decisions regarding Alex Smith.

The Chiefs need to prepare for the future at some point, but if Smith dragging his heels costs him a shot at another weapon on offense in exchange for his possible replacement, that's all on him and his agent. Tough schedule coming up this season, and the Draft is in 3 days.

SeeingRed 05-05-2014 11:53 AM

in another thread Pestilence mentioned possibility of trading Smith to Browns for 2nd rd pick...would be interesting. Scary....but given cap space and depending on what Smith wants could be a possibility

Make a deal with us or we may pick a QB

Drafting Johnny Football would eliminate the need to draft OL so it kills two birds with one stone.

The problem now is that, at least until the Chiefs on the clock, anybody who wants a QB thinks they're going to have to go over us. So if anybody worth a shit falls, we've basically just helped all the teams that pick in front of us in their negotiations.

Pretty much. If we were actually interested, no one would know.

It's either smoke from us, trying to conceal the idea that we really want a receiver (since a lot of teams want receivers) or it is smoke from some of the teams ahead of us (IE Philly, Green Bay) trying to drum up interest for teams to try and trade up ahead of us for their pick to get a QB they covet...

Be ironic to see the team pull the trigger in one of the more unlikely years.

However, it would be a wise, forward-thinking move should someone drop.

Murray and Mettenberger will both be better than Bortles or Bridgewater. I dont know about Carr but ive heard he demanded his brother play on the same team thats a concern.

Appearing on ESPN's*NFL Insiders*Monday, Chris Mortensen called Fresno State QB Derek Carr "a name you hear affiliated" with the Chiefs.

It comes on the heels of NFL Network's report that the Chiefs will consider a quarterback at No. 23. Mort hinted the Chiefs could be eyeing someone like Carr in a trade down, perhaps to the second round. It's possible this is just a leverage play from the Chiefs in the Alex Smith talks, but Andy Reid has often had a second- or third-round quarterback to develop. It would be sensible behind Smith in Kansas City.

Nothing more than pre-draft fluff, of course things will stall right before the draft....... lol

You don't restructure or re-sign a guy that you aren't 110% behind until after the draft. You never know who might fall through the cracks down to the 23rd pick.

Heard this where? Link please?

ESPN magazine has a nice write up about Derek Carr. His brother is training him-they get up every morning at 6 and go through a grueling work out and then watch film. David is in prime shape and thinks he can still play somewhere-so maybe that is where the rumour started?

Kiimo 05-05-2014 04:09 PM

Maybe they should be spending their time teaching him how to take a snap from a center in a pro-style offense before it goes live and he gets his shit pushed in just like his brother.

That would be awesome, but it will never happen.

Do not get me wrong, I would give Smith a 2 to 3 year contract at a good deal for both parties, but it will never happen and I do not want to handcuff the team to Smith.

If we could manage that trade it would give us two things. A 1st round QB thrown into the fire, or Bray thrown into the fire while the other learns a bit. It would give the Chiefs two young QBs with nothing but upside. Even if they fail I would be happy with them at least trying for once.

Yes, because QB is clearly a need for this team, as Alex Smith was only able to put up 44 points in a playoff game without Jamaal Charles.

It only makes sense to draft a quarterback in the first round if there's a decent chance that the guy you draft will be better than the guy who could be starting for you for the next 5 years.

I have no idea whether the Chiefs will look QB in the draft but the history is there.

Reid likes to stock up on QBs, Dorsey has proven he will grab a QB if they drop even with a starter already in place.

Depends on whether the rumor about Alex Smith contract negotiations is valid or not.

Geno performed as well as a rookie QB could with the worst group of skill position players in the the league. His final four games of the 2013 season were very solid.

Quote:

While helping the Jets go 3-1 in their last four games, Smith completed 68-of-116 passes for 790 yards, four TDs, two INTs and a passer rating of 83.6. He also rushed 31 times for 186 yards and three TDs.
