Now that Donald Sterling is gone, is David Glass now the worst owner in pro sports?

Obviously you can't blame the Royalys historic futility on Glass but his cheapness definitely prolonged it. I say he's defiantly top 5.

stonedstooge 05-06-2014 05:23 PM

Too bad GlASS doesn't have a girlfriend on the side

BryanBusby 05-06-2014 05:24 PM

Top 5? Yeah. Worst? No.

David Glass isn't white knighting his teams racist name.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-06-2014 05:32 PM

He might not be the worst owner in his parking lot.

Hes got to be bottom 3 for sure. No sense of urgency and a complete lack of passion.

tk13 05-06-2014 06:17 PM

10 years ago this might have been true. Glass is not even in the same stratosphere as Jeffrey Loria though.

People still act like it's 2001. That might even hurt the team because it takes heat off the GM. The Royals haven't traded away a player for financial reasons since Beltran, and that was 10 years ago now. They have spent MLB record amounts in the draft, and spent a lot of money in Latin America. They put up the money for the Greinke, Soria, Gordon, Butler and Perez contracts. Other than that first year with all the young contracts, Hosmer, Moose, etc... payroll has usually been above the other small market teams. And that's considering the Royals are near the bottom in revenue and are locked into an awful TV contract.

Meanwhile teams like the Rays, A's, Pirates, Rockies all have had plenty of success, playoffs, pennants, etc....while spending less money. I'd have no problem with a new owner but it sure shouldn't be used as a crutch if Dayton Moore gets fired.

Are we judging based on results on the field as well? Loria might be an asshole, but his teams have had some success on the field at times. Glass...........

IMO, I think Redskins owner Dan Snyder is worse.

Still no excuse for not willing to spend money on top free agents which he could easily afford to do but won't. The fact that he had to be prodded into spending money says a lot.

Really? When? Yeah he bought a team already loaded with prospects and won a World Series, and that was after running the Expos out of Montreal.

Deberg_1990 05-06-2014 07:13 PM

Didn't the Marlins win it all in 97 and 2003 I think? or am I wrong?

Like who? They've made runs at guys like Beltran, Torii Hunter, Kuroda, etc. over the years.

Where the Royals are really screwed financially is having a terrible TV contract. But I'd agree in general... that's the problem with baseball. Small market teams have difficulty competing for free agents, and it's only getting worse because the big market teams have huge TV contracts now. It's why the Dodgers print money. The only reason we got Shields was because the Rays can't afford to sign anyone.

The problem is how they've spent money. There are plenty of teams who have had success doing less, both in payroll and in the draft. You have to spend the money well, and develop starting pitching. You have to. I don't know how you debate this. You can't afford to build a team in baseball through FA. League average players are now getting $10 million a year.

The owner in 97 was Huizenga, who owned the Dolphins. Loria bought the team in 2002 after dumping the Expos. Then they won a World Series a year later, he dumped everyone.

Then, spent years begging for taxpayer money for their new stadium, threatened to move the team to San Antonio... finally got the $$ and went crazy in FA to appear like they were trying again: got Buerhle, Reyes, all those guys, then dumped them all and slashed payroll by about $60 million after the first season in the new park.

And that's not to mention all the other meddling he's apparently done with the coaching staff and front office over the years, vetoing personnel decisions, etc.

Where did sterling go?

gblowfish 05-06-2014 08:01 PM

He was worse than Sterling even before all this stuff happened.

Dave Lane 05-06-2014 08:15 PM

Yes.

The A's and the Rays have probably the two best scouting and developmental systems in all of MLB. The Pirates were in a death spiral but they have McCutchen who is fantastic and a good supporting cast. They just play in a really tough division with the Reds and Cards.

I think it's mainly people who don't go to games and wouldn't follow them unless the team was winning anyway.
