DE Devito Takes On Mentor Role To Catapano

Says he is playing mentor to 2nd year DE Catapano who's added size and speed has impressed the veteran DE. Devito says that Cat has made "an unbelievable jump" and calls Catapano a dangerous weapon. Encouraging news :hmmm:

I wonder how it will all shake out after training camp. I was a little surprised that Allen Bailey is penciled in as the starter right now. I kind of figured it would be Devito and Catapano with Bailey as the backup.

DeVito is a solid technician, who could go on to be a good position coach after retirement.

Makes for a good mentor.

Don't be bringing a legitimate football take into this forum.

I donno about that...at this point I would say Walker is more of a 4th option at DE or possibly a back up to Poe but maybe behind BOTH Bailey and Catapano on depth chart at DE. listen to how Devito praises Cat here, compares his leap in year 2 to that of Poe's last year....that's VERY encouraging. I read that Bailey is over 300 and with Catapano in the 290s and "faster and more explosive" this year than he was at 275 last year our D Line might actually be very stout. One of our most solid positions at this moment I'd say.

This is the great thing about the group of leaders we have (Smith, Charles, Poe, Houston, Berry, DJ, Tamba, Devito, Flowers) They all work very hard to perfect their bodies and their craft and it rubs off on the rest of the team. If we don't win it won't be from lack of effort/hardwork. I know Houston and Flowers aren't at OTA's but it doesn't change the fact that they've been a part of developing this locker room culture.

The FO never would've brought Walker in if they thought Bailey or Catapano were ready to be starting DEs.

From what I read Bailey is getting all the reps with first team.

Two guys I was crossing my fingers on to succeed: Catapano and Harris.

It sounds like those two players are both having a hell of a camp. That's good news for the team.

Well OTAs,mini-camps whatever you want to call them(Cliff Notes to the Chiefs playbook IMO-which IS needed) BUT bottom line the phrase "having a helluva a camp" doesn't mean POO unless it is done in pads full contact. Let's talk mid-August:hmmm:

My take is that reporters aren't obligated to talk about the "scrubs" on the team. They tend to mention guys who stand out in practices. It's a good thing that both Catapano and Harris are getting attention this early.

"The little engine that could" type of stories are always interesting to read for sure and root for as well. Fail safe type of reporting that always sells because it is the American way. Like you I hope Cat and Harris do well.

Point taken here too...plus when u watch that video and you see the way Devito talks about Catapano it's with respect. It's not a veteran praising a rookie for making improvement but more like a guy who has been around saying hey, this guy is good. compares his development with Poe last year....thats some high praise right there. I bet by Sept Catapano wins the job over Bailey. Walker becomes Poe's back up/ #4 DE

Hog's Gone Fishin 06-12-2014 06:49 AM

With Dee Ford being the next DT and Cat being the next Jared allen working with Houston, Hali and Poe blowing up the middle and DJ busting through I am getting a huge boner for this D.

BlackHelicopters 06-12-2014 06:56 AM

What is DeVito supposed to say? My teammate sucks? More fluff.

First, I want to know what the hell you are talking about in the perinthesised sentence.

Second, what we should be taking away from the praiseof Harris and Cat, respectively, is that Harris is catching everything thrown his way, which is really important in his development, and that Cat appears to have the same quicks to go along with his aded bulk.

Neither are guarantees that they will be successful, but they are positive and encouraging signs.

:thumb: Great points. I can't think of Devito missing any tackles? :hmmm: The best one he made was against the (chargers) I think-the running back had a huge hole-looked like a jailbreak-Devito got one hand on him and ripped him backwards while body slamming him. There was a Gif of it on here somewhere?

Glad to see him helping Big Cat- he might just have a break out year.

Considering how much we run sub-packages......Walker was brought in to play DT next to Poe more than he was brought in to play DE in the 3-4.

Ya, but Devito said the kid gained "15-20 lbs AND got even faster" and called him a "dangerous weapon" comparing his growth to Poe's last year....you can call that fluff if you want but it sounds rather encouraging to me.

This is what I thought as well. Walker will basicly be a "rotation" guy but he is probably the first backup for DE or DT because of the packages we run and helping to disguise, minimal, what we are doing.
With the signing of Walker and the drafting of Ford we definitely have a lot more depth that should help in keeping the guys up front a lot fresher than they were last season.
The news that Berry is going to be playing some, hopefully a lot, FS this season is also a huge plus for our secondary.
Hopefully all these moves help our D to disguise what they are trying or wanting to do on any given play.

CoMoChief 06-12-2014 11:50 AM

It would be great if he turned out to be a hidden gem.

We desperately need pressure from the front 3, and not just from Poe.

Because there is not words that can be used that appear positive while actually giving another player a mediocre review.
