Chiefs released CB Brandon Flowers.
Flowers' performance and usefulness in Kansas City slipped dramatically under new DC Bob Sutton last season, as a press-man scheme was installed in the secondary and Flowers failed to find a fit. He wound up mostly at slot corner, and was beaten relentlessly. The Chiefs were trying to trade Flowers, but found no takers for his contract. Flowers had some of the best years of his career under now-Texans DC Romeo Crennel, and cornerback depth is needed in Houston. We wouldn't be surprised to see them reunite. Flowers turned 28 in February.

Chargers agreed to terms with CB Brandon Flowers on a one-year contract.
The deal is worth "up to" $5 million and contains $3 million in total guarantees. Despite an anemic 2013 season as a misfit in Bob Sutton's press-man scheme, Flowers found a full bushel of suitors after the Chiefs released him 11 days ago. He lands in a spot where he can immediately rehab his value as a starting corner and then hit the open market again at age 29. Flowers put plenty of really good tape together from 2008-12, and will add borderline Pro Bowl shadow ability to a pass defense that ranked 29th in the league last year. With first-round corner Jason Verrett also added to incumbents Shareece Wright and Richard Marshall, this won't be quite the unit to pick on that it was last season.
He's a Charger now.

OldSchool 06-13-2014 01:08 PM

He has been released. Had a great run for us considering his size. I think we'll be fine without him. The only reason why they were so bad in the 3rd CB position last year after Flowers went down was because it was Dunta Robinson playing that role. We should be fine with Parker stepping up, 3rd round Gaines, etc.

loochy 06-13-2014 01:08 PM

WTF? It's not so bad that he's being released, as he's injury prone and expensive, but.....

In the slot or on the outside? Our starters are going to be Smith and Cooper with Gaines or Owens in the slot.

We'll be fine with Parker, Chris Owens (who actually has extensive experience playing the slot and was one of the better slot corners in the league but didn't get too much play in FA because he is too small to be anything else), and Gaines. Van Dyke has a shot to make the team also. We're going faster on this team, that's a good thing.

Yup, I think that anyone who paid any attention to our cap situation and the actual play of our players expected something like this to happen either this off-season or the next.

Hali will be next if he doesn't get double digit sacks this season or if he has a noticeable decrease in quality of play. I think he still has a couple of effective years left in him because he never depended on elite athleticism anyways, but the team might feel differently with Ford in the fold.

I've told people for months now that this is the reality of the situation. I still believe that Smith is a stop-gap( and his agent will more than likely make it a reality ). My belief is that the acquisition of Smith coupled with 9 pro bowlers and an easy schedule was the first and last shot for the Herm draftees, and I'm sticking by it. We're moving on.

They'll tag Smith and draft a QB next year.

Cooper should be improved with the growth that he showed after his mid-season thrashing.

Flowers doesn't fit the system and was being overpaid for what he brought to the team last year. It's that simple. If the FO thought that he was worth it and really thought that they had nothing behind him, there is no way that they would have released him.

Cooper played pretty solid in the playoff game against the Colts. Tons of potential in him following a season in which he had 20 PDFs and 3 INTs and seeing as he only switched to CB in the middle of his college career but was good enough to put up those kinds of numbers in the NFL as a rookie, the sky is the limit for Cooper as a perimeter corner. He'll be fine.
