Alex Boone holding out

Rumor is that a number of teams may have made it known that they're interested in Alex Boone. Guy is making nothing and is holding out for a real contract. He can play swing tackle (and do a heck of a job of it since LT is his natural position) but he's the starting RG for the 9ers and is one of the best at his position.

Seems like it'd be smart for the Chiefs to pull the trigger here on this guy. Maybe a 3rd? He'd be worth it. Even with having to put a new contract together.

KCrockaholic 08-09-2014 02:21 PM

We're going to have 11-12 picks in 2015. But I wouldn't waste one on a guard. We have 2 good young ones right now.

Bowser 08-09-2014 02:22 PM

Never heard of him

Yes, but he'd help solidify the line today...and as I mentioned you can push him out to tackle since that's his natural position.

Walkoff homer that sent the Yanks to the World series. That was the same series that Pedro grabbed Zimmer and threw him on his ass.

We can't ****ing afford a new contract for a guard that wants (what seems to be) the highest contract for his position.

Not only no, but **** no.

He probably want's to be paid like a starting right guard...he's getting a back up's money now. There's room in the cap.

RealSNR 08-09-2014 02:26 PM

You pay Alex Boone an Andy Levitre-type of deal, and you can say goodbye to Justin Houston. We'd also end up cutting loose all kinds of guys just to afford Alex Smith's extension.

Inb4 John Dope and OldSchool say, "Sounds great!"

Don't see how he fits at tackle either? We're not benching the #1 overall pick. And Stephenson is still trending upwards. Doesn't make any sense to have him on this team.

There's room THIS YEAR.

There isn't room next year to have his deal and also Justin Houston's, who should be the team's #1 re-signing priority, even over Smith.

Also, RG is less of a problem than LG. Jeff Allen looked like dogshit on Thursday. If we replace anybody on our line, it needs to be Allen.

My guess is that he's looking for about 4-5 million. I think it is doable without giving up keeping Smith or Houston. I don't think there's a huge difference between playing lg and rg...he could play either. Again, he solidifies the line today and you can shift him out to tackle and he might do better than the guys there now (he was really good when replacing Staley). OL is the most important part of the offense imo.

milkman 08-09-2014 02:35 PM

True fan.

CoMoChief 08-09-2014 02:38 PM

We need a CB, S, WR, looooooooong before we need a guard.

CaliforniaChief 08-09-2014 02:41 PM

Trading picks away and then giving up critical cap space when we need it all to resign a playmaking, pass-rushing LB and a QB that we have up 2 2nd round picks for...in exchange for an interior lineman?

And we can't do 4-5 million. Not until we figure out a way to work through some of the other bloated contracts on the team.

Plus, you have no clue about that 4-5 million number. You said that the guy is one of the best at his position in the league and that he's holding out until he gets a real contract. Why wouldn't he ask for Levitre money? It makes no sense for him to demand his money right now and then miss out on and extra 1-2 million per year, when he can just work through the last year of his shit contract and get paid the top contract for a guard in the NFL.

I don't see how the 9ers fix this. If they back down then everyone knows their hard core stance is bs.

If he's not going to be a 9er, I'd like to see him here.

You're right, I don't know for sure. I am guessing, which is all anyone can do at this point. It is certainly worth looking at IMO.

Chase Daniel, Sean Smith, and Ryan Succop come to mind.

If the chiefs don't straighten out the line, it won't matter what you have for Alex to throw to. And you'll need more CBs and safeties too because they'll be winded from all the play time.

The Oline will be fine if Eric Fisher improves a little. He got a little high and was pushed back on that Alex Smith fumble, but that was also Smith's fault a little too. Doesn't matter...he needs improvement and certainly isn't living up to #1 overall. Even though it's prob never going to happen, he needs to start playing like Orlando Pace.

But we need someone to be able to play CB well. Here's to hoping Sean Smith plays like a pro bowler.

CaliforniaChief 08-09-2014 02:57 PM

If the Chiefs were to give up picks AND break the bank for Boone, then wouldn't it have been smarter to just pay Geoff Schwartz?

Add to that Fasano and Avery.

We're all but certain to drop Hali. We might also be parting with DeVito.

Dustin Colquitt is also a consideration, though he's far more likely in 2016 when his cap number will greatly outweigh his dead money.

Schwartz looked pretty bad in his Giants debut.

Just sign Incognito. Maybe he can toughen up the pussy Eric Fisher

Bufkin 08-09-2014 03:17 PM

As I said in another thread, I think losing Asamoah was a mistake. Atlanta paid him 4.5 million a year over 5 years. For an efficient guard who just turned 26, that's pocket change.

Titty Meat 08-09-2014 03:25 PM

Maybe he just hates Eli Manning like the rest of us.

I thought Boone ended up at guard because he struggled with speed at OT.

Hardly. He could play LT now. Like I said, he filled in for Staley without missing a beat. They put him at RG because he was better than anyone else they had free for a line position. When Staley was hurt, they rolled him out and put Looney to back up the RG position.

Pasta Little Brioni 08-09-2014 04:30 PM

Dumb. Too many guys needing paid.
