Can we designate it for the super bowl?

So 1 game suspension for hitting the pipe and 2 games for hitting your wife. Seems fair

I would imagine he got suspended under the conduct policy rather than the drug policy. If he had actually tested positive, he most likely would have gotten 4 games.

Does a suspension help cap space? I am sure Bowe makes $500,000 per game. I am asking this question because I really don't know if suspensions help space.

It goes to a mix of NFL charities and players association trust, unless that's changed in recent years. I don't believe it effects the cap.

thabear04 08-15-2014 11:05 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs have a more pressing issue with Dwayne Bowe than a finger that has been dislocated "about 15 times."

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via two sources informed of the imminent suspension, the veteran wide receiver will be banned from the season opener after violating the NFL policy and program on substances of abuse.

The one-game suspension is in response to a November arrest for marijuana possession that was eventually bargained down to lesser charges of defective equipment and littering.

"I am extremely sorry that I can't be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment," Bowe said Friday in a statement released by the team. "I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology. I will be supporting my teammates in week one, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in week two and beyond as we work towards our goal of winning the Super Bowl."

"We are disappointed in the situation and will miss him on the field, but we support the league's decision," the team said in its own statement.

Bowe was previously suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances in 2009.

The suspension presents an intriguing option for the Chiefs front office. Bowe's base salary for 2015 remains $10.75 million, but it's no longer guaranteed, per Rapoport.

There's a strong argument to be made that Bowe is currently the NFL's most overpaid wide receiver. Moving like a tight end in 2013, he didn't put Kansas City at a competitive advantage on a weekly basis. Come next offseason, the team's brain trust might decide that his salary is a competitive disadvantage.

With Bowe out of the lineup versus the Titans, in the meantime, Junior Hemingway is the top candidate to join Donnie Avery in the starting lineup.

Keep an eye on undrafted rookie Albert Wilson, a playmaker out of Georgia State who has impressed in training camp as well as the preseason opener.

Alternatively, coach Andy Reid could opt for more two-tight-end sets, with breakout candidate Travis Kelce playing increased snaps.

Either way, the Chiefs will continue to lean heavily on Jamaal Charles to carry the offense.

not really imo

we didn't address the WR position this year so we aren't cutting him this year 8.5 million guarantee or not.

Next year it's only 1.5 million, not enough money to determine whether we keep him or not.

Sign Maclin next spring, draft Stephon Diggs, keep Bowe.

After 2015 is over cut Bowe, draft another WR high.

Quesadilla Joe 08-15-2014 12:54 PM

Quote:

Bowe’s suspension could result in his depature from Chiefs, soon

The one-game suspension of Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe could, in hindsight, become the domino that ultimately gives the Browns a replacement for Josh Gordon.

The suspension most likely voids the remaining fully guaranteed money in Bowe’s contract: $8.75 million in 2014 and $1.5 million in 2015. It creates a window for the Chiefs to dump Bowe, avoiding more than $10 million and creating an immediate $8.75 million in 2014 cap space. (The extra cap space now would almost entirely offset the $9 million cap charge they’d take in 2015, due to the post-June 1 move.)

Unless Bowe’s contract specifically was negotiated to remove now-standard language voiding future guarantees in the event of a suspension, the Chiefs could make a move at any point after Bowe’s one-week exile begins, but before the moment that his salary becomes guaranteed as “termination pay,” a benefit for all players with four or more years of service who are on a team’s Week One roster.

If Bowe is cut, he’d become a free agent. And if Browns receiver Josh Gordon is suspended for a full year, Cleveland would have a clear need at receiver.

And Browns G.M. Ray Farmer worked for the Chiefs when Bowe was drafted. And Farmer’s advisor, Bill Kuharich, served as the V.P. of player personnel in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted Bowe.

The Chiefs also could trade Bowe to the Browns (or anyone else), but it would make no sense for Cleveland (or anyone else) to assume the obligation to pay him $8.75 million for 2014 if they can sign him for less on the open market.

Of course, coach Mike Pettine and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan would have to believe that Bowe could learn Shanahan’s offense. But both Cleveland and Kansas City rely on West Coast-style offenses, making the potential transition easier.

Regardless of where Bowe ends up, the suspension gives the Chiefs the opportunity to block more than $10 million that currently is fully guaranteed to him. If they choose to do so, Bowe’s most obvious next destination would become Cleveland.

No chance they cut him this year. But if I'm reading Terez right, cutting him next year frees up just under $10M. A big season would certainly help his cause.

Bowe plead to Defective Equipment-Not Possession of a controlled substance.

Oh, I know, but the legal sanctions are nothing compared to the potential financial costs. His agent should have known better, unless he has that clause waived in his contract.
