Does Chase Daniel have any trade value for the Kansas City Chiefs? The answer is ... probably.

In an ESPN Insider piece on backup quarterbacks who could start next year, Adam Caplan reports that at least two teams "privately" discussed the idea of trading for Daniel earlier this year. The report does not state that they called the Chiefs or had any discussions with the Chiefs. So we are in the rumor mill with this one.

Daniel signed a 3-year, $10 million deal before the 2013 season so he has one more year left on his deal after this season.

Why a trade makes sense

Tyler Bray is currently on IR. If he has developed to the point where the Chiefs might be comfortable with him as the backup in 2015, this trade idea has some merit because the Chiefs are likely not going to keep four quarterbacks. They lucked out this year when Bray was hurt during the preseason. So, for me, this hinges on Bray's development and how comfortable the Chiefs are with him as the potential backup in 2015.

Why a trade doesn't make sense

I'm sure Chiefs fans would be interested in seeing what other teams would give up for him (as would I) but I'm not all that excited about the possibility of trading Daniel barring a high draft pick. While Smith hasn't missed a game yet due to injury, it's a very real possibility that will come at some point this year or next. The Chiefs are in one of the best divisions in football which means every game is extremely important for their playoff hopes. I just don't think that the mid-round or later draft pick you might get for Daniel would be worth what he could provide in a spot start or two. The position is just too important.

Daniel is a better bridge quarterback for the Chiefs than Aaron Murray or Bray right now. Again, we'll see how Bray develops but right now, Daniel has more potential value to the Chiefs than a mid-round draft pick. (I know plenty of you disagree with this -- let's hear it in the comments.)

What also factors into this is that the Chiefs are already sitting pretty with multiple compensatory picks expected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Another mid-round pick or later wouldn't be all that enticing to me compared to what Daniel could provide should he have to start a game (or multiple games) in the event of an injury.

Chances of it happening

Given Andy Reid's track record with flipping quarterbacks, this is a topic that will likely be revisited as we await the trade deadline. I wouldn't rule it out, especially if the Chiefs are comfortable with the development from Bray or Murray. The Chiefs are unlikely to keep four quarterbacks on the active roster next year so you have to a move will have to be made someplace.

Daniel is the only backup QB on the roster that would give us a chance to keep winning if Smith went down. All Smith is doing is dumping off to RBs and TEs anyway...maybe an occasional 10 yard pass to a WR that he hopes will get YAC. To trade him would be a bad decision.

Pretty nuts to think teams have called for Daniel.

The Chiefs had to outbid three other teams (that we know of) for Daniel.

Crazy how valuable everything must think he is.

The question would be, does the coaching staff trust Murray more than Daniel to take over? I think we can forecast the answer to that question with quite a bit of certainty.

Everyone complains about how much Daniel is making when it's not even their money. First it was in preseason when Bray was anointed the official CP backup QB position, only to find out he has barely progressed at all. And now it's Murray who is basically a Chase Daniel clone except that he has about 10% of the experience and is coming off a serious knee injury?

Barring a seriously good offer, Daniel is here through this year, and probably next year as well.

2. Aquire mid-round draft selection.
3. Fall over ass-backwards into our own Antonion Brown.
4.???
5. Profit


Chase isnt going to be a lobg term asset. Youve got a chance to convert him into one though, despite how slim that chance may be. It certainly beats Chase leaving this offseason after cutting him going "Boy, remember when we could hace gotten an extra 5th for gim?"

Most of us get upset when they pay $62M to average QBs even though it isn't our money. I think you are in the minority if you don't get caught up with the team contracts...

And you say Bray hardly progressed...are you getting this off of the one article about him not being able to retain the playbook? I have to go back an check, but I think he did pretty well this preseason, again.

As for Murray's knee being an issue...it's 2014.

His contract is like paying an insurance premium. You hate to have to do it, and it's too expensive, but you'll be glad you did when you need it.

In typical Chiefs fashion, they are overpaying for their premium compared to other teams....

But will we be glad?

If Smith goes down we are screwed anyway.

Who knows. He showed pretty good against the Chargers last year, but there isn't much more to go on. But that's still more than the other options on our roster.

Kyle Orton is an experienced backup who would be your insurance premium. Daniel is unproven trash with a positive attitude and a body fat index of Billy Butler

This seems contradictory to me. If you believe smith doesn't do anything but dump the ball off, then why would you need a high paid back up QB to do that? If that really is all he is doing, can't you count on Murray to do that or Bray when he is back from IR?

Daniel could be a starter in the NFL. He has a good deep ball and can run. A strong arm. His decision making could be better

Until Percy got traded to the Jets, I didn't even know they did this midseason. Trades never happen that I'm aware of.

We outbid other teams for Daniel because our entire QB depth chart was complete shit. He knew that he had to get a starter, a capable backup and a developmental guy in here all in one offseason. If Smith goes down....this team is not making the playoffs on the back of Chase Daniel.

Daniel has played ONE game in his entire career. That's like calling a virgin an experienced lover because he watches porn, reads books, and masturbates a lot.
