Lorenzo Cain got screwed out of a Gold Glove
How is he even not a finalist. Like seriously whoever votes for these finalists are ****ing reeruned.
|
That is a bit surprising. :hmmm:
|
For reference, here's the finalists that were chosen for Center Field this year.
AL Center Field Jackie Bradley Jr., Red Sox (0) Adam Eaton, White Sox (0) Adam Jones, Orioles (3) |
Adam Jones can enjoy gold on his hand. LoCain will take the gold around his ring finger.
|
Not even a finalist???

I wonder if Cain playing RF at times had something to do with it?

I'd like to see him win it, but I'd also say we're probably a little biased. I really can't say if those other guys are truly better or worse than Cain. Sometimes it takes a year or two to "get noticed." This was kind of Cain's big year for coming out. Plus, he gets yanked over to right field in a lot of games. |

Lorenzo Cain was second for outfielders in the AL in UZR/150...to Alex Gordon.
|
who cares?
we have Gordon/Cain/Dyson/Hosmer/Moose and Salvy...sometimes all on the field at the same time...and that's not even mentioning Escobar. Our defense is the best ever. |
Cain will win the Gold Glove next year based on this year's performance in the playoffs. It's a reputation thing.
|
Stupid. And if this is a rep thing, then why in the **** is Jackie Bradley Jr. in there?
|
Cain played 723 innings and all the other guys had over 900.
So there's your answer. |
Adam Eaton!!
|
Yost moving him around from CF to RF may have hurt his chances, but he'll be in the mix next year for sure.
|
They must be making a new award. Probably the platinum glove. Which goes to the best overall fielder in your league. It all makes sence now why Cain wasn't a finalist
|
According metrics among center fielders with at least 700 innings in the field, the top 3 AL CFers are JBJ, Leonys Martin, and Lorenzo Cain.
|
I didn't even think about him being moved into RF for a good portion of the games this year. He's just too good of an outfielder to not even be a finalist though

He didn't hit much

I'd like to be outraged over this, but I'm just not.
Oh well, he'll be in the mix next year. |

Well, here's one sure answer as to why Cain wasn't among the finalists--he wasn't qualified.
I ran across an article about the Gold Glove award, which is run by Rawlings. It said that the Gold Glove rules are that a player must have played 95 games and 713 innings at his position by the 141st game of the season. By the 141st game, Cain only had 77 games in Center and 609 innings, so he was well short in both categories. For the whole season he only had 93 games and 723 innings. And, there's your explanation. He just didn't play enough in center, and it wasn't just shifting over to right in the later innings. He was well short of the games requirement. |

Jackie Bradley Junior couldn't hit water if you dropped him in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He was still the best defensive center fielder in baseball this past year, you asshat. |
Quote:
"Bottom line, Cain's not a finalist because he ranked just 12th in the American League in innings at the position in question." That's not true. Its not his innings played ranking, it is that he didn't have enough innings to qualify (or games). Its a relatively new rule, enacted when guys were winning while hardly playing any games at the position. It was strictly a vote, and guys were winning just on reputation. |
Kevin Kiermaier of TB only played like 70 games and 500 innings in RF and he got nominated though.

All I can think of is that the requirements are skewed for players who aren't on the roster (it looks like Kiermaier was a later call-up). Maybe he qualified because he played in a sufficient percentage of the games he was on the roster. I can't locate 2014 rules, so this is the best I have to go on. http://www.mercurynews.com/athletics...nge-gold-glove |

I'm sure he is cool with his MVP trophy.

Raphael Palmiero won the GG in 1999 despite playing only 28 games at 1b and 135 at DH.

I've seen the eligibility rules referenced in few stories and Cain didn't meet them, but I can't explain why Kevin Kiermaier apparently did despite less innings and games at his position. |

It's a big reason people thought he should be in the HOF. Borderline HOF stats, but his gold glove defense put him over the top.
